Teabags Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 Over the last few weeks I have been unable to open a weekly email from a well known and respected organization. Initially it was sent in both PDF and Word so I could open it with the PDF, however this week it was only a Word document so had to delete. The warning is :- Prohibited File Type. This message contains an attachment whose file type is considered dangerous. This file has been deactivated. I am using Windows Livemail with Windows 7 Professional and Office 2010 Starter. My query is, has this anything to do with a recent Windows update? and I think it is a docx?. Any advice would be appreciated. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 Hi. This actually can be one of two possibilities, either your ISP or E Mail provider is being a little over zealous regarding E Mail attachments, or the other and more likely possibility is your own antivirus program. Which antivirus program are you using? Check it to see if it is set to scan E Mails first, then temporarily turn that part off, or if possible set it to allow .docx documents. Let us know which antivirus you have and we or one of our security guys can advise regarding setting it. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Teabags Posted October 1, 2013 Author Posted October 1, 2013 Thanks for the reply. I am using MSE anti-virus. I did consider changing Live Mail settings to accept all docs, but didn't want to run the risk. However after some searching I think it may be related to a recent MS Office 2010 update 2589275 which was downloaded around 9-13th September. I managed to delete this and left the original MS Office 2010 alone. I will have to wait until next weeks email to see if it has worked. Again thank you for your reply. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 Hi again, let us know how you get on with the next mail shot. You may well be right about that update as well as there were three in total that caused a lot of problems for people around that date, myself included. Have a look in your updates list and see if you also have KB 2760588 and KB 2760411, those kept going round in a continuous circle of download and install, download and install, until they were removed from the list and put into the hidden updates. Teabags Posted October 7, 2013 Author Posted October 7, 2013 Hi Nev. Mail shot back to normal this week. Both Word and PDF docs opened, so removing this update has done the trick. As for the other updates you mention I don't seem to have them. Reading through the recent PC magazines it seems as though eight of their updates had to be reissued. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 Hi, glad it is all sorted then, and thanks for the update. Indeed there were a few updates caused problems around that time for a lot of people. Hopefully Microsoft have made sure it doesn't happen again, perhaps till the next time, Nev.
