ikaya Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 Hi, I have an HP PSC all-in-one which has functioned perfectly well for several years with my VAIO VGN-NS11J running Windows 7 64-bit. Recently it seemed to have been lost as Windows stated it was installing the driver for it. Since then I have tried to re-install it several times by downloading the 'latest' driver from the HP website and each time the installation fails, with varying error messages such as 'cannot fine ....file', 'error 6'. I can get it to work using a Windows installed driver but it will only print and not scan. Windows seems to have difficulty finding and keeping it. I've also tried repeating the installation with AVG turned off and after a clean boot but no joy. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 Hi, do you still have the original disk that came with the printer/scanner? If you do, there is a specific way to install HP all in one's, you must first disconnect the printer from the computer, then put the disk in the drive and let it install, it will prompt you to connect the printer again, and that is the time to do so and not before. It may also need to be disconnected for the downloaded drivers to install correctly, try that if you cannot find the original install disk. If still no good after that, it may be the printer/scanner has a fault. If so, it is cheaper to replace than to have it repaired. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? ikaya Posted October 4, 2013 Author Posted October 4, 2013 Thanks Plastic Nev, I'll give it a shot as I do still have the original disc. Last time I tired it, however, I had to download a new driver from the HP website so we'll see if it works. Will let you know tomorrow. Ikaya Quote
ikaya Posted October 5, 2013 Author Posted October 5, 2013 (edited) Hi, I've tried to install the printer using the original disc but it stops early on and states it cannot continue, wanting me to log in as Administrator in spite of the fact that I am this already. When I have tried to log out so I can log in again Windows automatically logs me in again. Also, as part of the installation it checks on the HP website for updates and states there are none available when I know there is a new one as I've downloaded it many times. I'm beginning to wonder if there's not something wrong with Windows. Could it be a virus or some other nasty? Edited October 5, 2013 by ikaya Quote
Plastic Nev Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 If everything else is working correctly, I doubt there is a virus or malware problem, though what antivirus do you have? A scan would perhaps put your mind at rest. When you first put the disk in for the printer, do you have the option to right click, and then choose "Run as administrator"? Otherwise, I am getting convinced that there is some form of hardware fault with the printer, not a lot can be done with it if that is correct I am afraid, a technician would of course confirm it or not, but that may cost more to fix than buying a new printer. ikaya Posted October 6, 2013 Author Posted October 6, 2013 Hi, I use AVG Free and have scanned without any threats being found. When I insert the disc it opens and shows the files on the disc. I then locate the 'setup.exe' file and right-click to get 'Run as administrator', which I left-click. The full message I get if I try to install from the disc is: 'This software cannot be installed using the "Run as..." command. The installation cannot continue until this is resolved. Required action: Click Cancel to exit this software installation. Log off and then log on as a user with administration privileges. If there is no System Administrator, have the primary user of this computer install the software. Restart the installation by removing and re-inserting this installation CD.' I am both the System Administrator and primary user and have tried doing as the disc advises but end up with the same message and outcome again. This all occurs long before I even get to the stage of being told to connect the printer, which is why I was wondering about malware. Thank you again for your time. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted October 6, 2013 Posted October 6, 2013 Hi, the only other thoughts then are a possible firewall conflict blocking certain files, which firewall are you using? try installing with that and AVG turned off and disconnected from the internet for safety. ikaya Posted October 6, 2013 Author Posted October 6, 2013 Thank you, I use Windows Firewall and will try the installation with it and AVG turned off as you suggest. Quote
ikaya Posted October 7, 2013 Author Posted October 7, 2013 Hi, I tried re-installing the printer with both AVG and the Windows Firewall turned off and this time got a pop-up stating that it 'cannot find' a certain file. I was unable to find the name of the file as the path was abbreviated but it was in the \temp folder where the installation files are. I'm totally at my wits' end now. Quote
RandyL Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Hi. Do you have a model number? A quick look showed me 52 models of PSC printers. If you give us a model number and as much information as you can on the errors we may find something on the HP site. Quote We are all members helping other members. ikaya Posted October 8, 2013 Author Posted October 8, 2013 Hi, it's a PSC 1610 but I've haad partial success. I've been looking for a solution and have managed to get the software installed, which is the furthest yet, by following the advice in this post: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-All-in-One-Install-Setup-e-g-Windows-8/HP-Solution-Center-installation-just-stops-c309g-m-Win7/m-p/2481089/highlight/true#M86689 The only problem now is that when I plug in the printer as requested by the software it does not recognise the printer. Does this mean my printer is faulty? ikaya Quote
Plastic Nev Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Hi providing the power is definitely on at the time you connected the USB connection, please do check that, and still not recognising the printer, it does indeed look like it is a printer fault. I mentioned that possibility in post 2 as it had been working OK for a long time then stopped doing so for no apparent reason. At this stage, it would be likely to be expensive to repair, though no harm in asking a local technician for advice, though I think it may be cheaper to buy a new printer scanner. I did have a much earlier version of a HP printer scanner that after much use had broken the cable connecting the print head, it was cheaper to buy a new printer than to repair that. Nev. RandyL Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 We could check to see if you have the right drivers and there is a diagnostic utility at the HP site. Another quick look and I get two matches. PSC 1610v and PSC 1610xi. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. ikaya Posted October 9, 2013 Author Posted October 9, 2013 Thanks very much Plastic Nev and RandyL, I think I shall just give up and buy a new printer. My patience is exhausted and, having battled with this for well over 4 weeks, I've had enough. Many thanks for your time and trouble on my behalf. ikaya Quote
