wee scottie Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 Hello, I have, very recently, taken delivery of a new Desk Top computer. I have two 1000GB Hard Disks installed. They work in tandem in case one fails. However, when I go into "My Computer" to check on the capacity left |I'm amazed at the reading. It says that Local Disk C has only 111GB free. There is also an icon which says "New Volume (1) 931 GB free. I cannot make a head or tail out of this! I would appreciate elucidation. Thanks! Quote
KenB Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 Hi and welcome to ExTS :) It says that Local Disk C has only 111GB free. There is also an icon which says "New Volume (1) 931 GB free. I suspect that your hard drive is partitioned with "New Volume" being the second partition. You don't say which operating system you have ?? If Win 7 Start > type in ....... diskmgmt.msc .......ENTER If Win 8 Mouse Curser to top right corner > In Search Box type Disk Management > click on Settings > Create and Format Hard Disk Partitions will show as a box Click on this or hit ENTER You should be looking at like this: ( This is an old image ) http://www.magicdatabackup.com/howtoimgs/Disk_Management_XP.gif Disk 0 is the main Hard Drive and in this case it shows 4 partitions.(C: ) (E: ) (F: )and (G: ) Disk 1 is the second hard drive with 3 partitions. What do you see against Disk 0 is Disk Management ? ( A screen shot would be useful ) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
wee scottie Posted October 16, 2013 Author Posted October 16, 2013 Thanks for your welcome KenB. I don't know how to do a screen shot. Sorry. Against Disk 0 it records: System Reserved 350MB NTFS Healthy System Active. then C: 111.45 GB NTFS Healthy (Boost, Page File, Crash Dump Primary Partition Quote
wee scottie Posted October 16, 2013 Author Posted October 16, 2013 Sorry, operating Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit Quote
KenB Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 I don't know how to do a screen shot. Go back to Disk Management. Press PrtSc key ( top of keyboard ) Open Paint from Start > Paint Paste in the screen shot ( CTRL + V ) Save it to your desktop or somewhere you will be able to find it ( save as .jpg extension ) Now come back here and click on REPLY > Go Advanced ( bottom right ) Scroll down to Manage Attachments .....click on this Add Files > Select Files ...... find the Screen Shot that you did .....click on this Save > Upload Click Done ( bottom right ) This will attach your screen shot here :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Armageddon Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 KenB may be able to advise further but am fairly certain the reason you don't see the rest of the drive is because of the RAID set up Quote Google is your friend We are all members helping other members. wee scottie Posted October 16, 2013 Author Posted October 16, 2013 Thanks Armageddon for taking the time. Quote
KenB Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 Hi I am sure Armageddon is correct with suspecting the Raid set-up. ( I am not too familiar with Raid ) If you go back to Disk Management and right click on C: partition ....... is there an option to Extend the Volume ? If this is new then I suggest that you give the place you bought it a ring and ask them - because you seem to be missing about 90% of one of your drives. KenB Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 With a new pc it is not worth playing with settings. The people who set it up should be able to give you a quick answer. :) Let us know how you get on. wee scottie Posted October 17, 2013 Author Posted October 17, 2013 I have left a message with them. I'll let you know the outcome. As you say, they should know the answers:rolleyes: Quote
wee scottie Posted October 17, 2013 Author Posted October 17, 2013 Right, I have a reply. As you both surmised, it has a Raid1 configuration which means that although there are two 1000GB Hard drives the capacity is only 1000GB. This I realized, but could not find a way to view that capacity status. Anyway, it is Computer> Rt. Cl on the second Drive (Drive Raid Vol 1)> Properties and the "Pie" chart appears. I really do appreciate you input. Thanks! Quote
