mij Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 I assume this is a CPU over temperature trigger point, it happens too late in the cycle and the clip stops working. Running speccy tells me the temp. is above 66C and I do see 75C after the fan kicks in. Is this the right temp.? I have tried updating the BIOS but ASUS baulks at the install wizard (it's an ASUSTek Basswood (Socket 775). Looking at the BIOS it says Phoenix Award BIOS Cmos setup activity. So I don't know which way to run with this. jim Quote

mij Posted October 17, 2013 Author Posted October 17, 2013 Hmmmm, you might have something there. I've just been running the other browser here (IEx) for about 20 minutes and it hasn't stopped once. The fan tripped in when I opened my preferred browser to type this reply - firefox. All my programs are set to firefox so yes it seems to be browser specific. jim Quote
Plastic Nev Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Hi Jim, if it is Firefox only it may be a RAM problem, not actually faulty, just not enough. The reason I say that is I have found RAM use over a period of time is climbing continuously with Firefox, the last two updates have made it horribly greedy for RAM again. So first question, not answered by the above, is how much RAM have you got in? Secondly, open task manager, then click "Processes" and keep an eye on how much memory is being used by Firefox. Recently I have seen mine go as high as 900,000K. Firefox starts slowing down and struggling long before it gets that high, and I have 4GB of RAM in this cheapo windows 7 machine. Nev. Plastic Nev Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Hi Jim, mainly because there are so many other processes requiring RAM, plus the graphics requirements as well I think perhaps some larger sized sticks of RAM may be of help. You have a maximum of only 2GB installed and though I don't know what the motherboard will take, or what operating system and either 32bit or 64bit, it should still be able to take at least another 1GB and maybe a full 2GB on top, though if XP 32bit it will not use some of the total 4GB. It will mean some juggling of the sticks, and discarding some you already have to fit larger ones, considering all slots are in use. As a by the way, look at the memory use in Task Manager during and after running a Youtube video. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes a good bit higher. Nev. mij Posted October 18, 2013 Author Posted October 18, 2013 Hi Nev and thanks for coming back on this one. I was under the impression that this had 4Mb of RAM but I've just pulled out a stick and it says 521Mb so four of them and we are up to the 2Mb you mentioned :). Ok the next thing is how do I determine what memory this will take? This is a 32bit machine with W7 on it and an AsusTek motherboard, wait a minute won't speccy do that bit for me? Plastic Nev Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Woops, forgot to mention, the CPU temperature from your first listing is a bit high as well, so your original thoughts regarding temperatures need to be looked into as well Jim. If the CPU heatsink and fan is clean, it may need some fresh thermal paste putting between the CPU and heatsink. As a comparison, my CPU is currently running at around 20C, and it's been on all day. Also, if you run that crucial scan, not only will it tell you what the motherboard will handle, they also give some recommendations of type of RAM to fit. However, now we know it is only 32bit, then 4GB is maximum any way. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. mij Posted October 18, 2013 Author Posted October 18, 2013 Thanks Nev, I've ordered 4 lots of 1Gb and I will try some new thermal paste under the CPU at the same time. I did give it a clean and some thermal paste but it was quite a while ago. It has only been doing this for the past month or so. I will report back when that arrives in 3 to 5 days time. jim Quote
KenB Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Hi Jim I will try some new thermal paste under the CPU You need to be very particular when cleaning off the old paste. Use rubbing ( isopropyl ) alcohol - get it from a chemist. [ you don't need much ] When applying new paste use a very small amount ( about the size of a pea ) More is not good - you can have too much and this is as bad as not enough. Use something like an old credit card to spread it evenly and thinly over the surface. If you need more info Google "Applying Thermal Paste" Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! mij Posted October 18, 2013 Author Posted October 18, 2013 (edited) Thanks KenB I remember having to google the application of the paste before so yes, will do that. I rarely do these things often enough to remember them exactly. I'll take it apart and clean it out as well, that solved a few problems before as I recall. Ah rubbing alcohol, I've heard that pastel artists use that to rub-in an undercoat before they start layering......hmmm that could come in handy. cheers jim Edited October 18, 2013 by mij Quote
mij Posted October 23, 2013 Author Posted October 23, 2013 Today is Wednesday the 23rd of October and I have fitted the 4GB of RAM.Nothing works. Nothing at all. What is more the fan is working overtime. So I put the 512Kb sticks back in and the same thing happened - no power-up and fan going fast. I am writing this on SWMBO's Ipad. Any Ides? There are no bleeps from the audio to aid the diagnosis. jim Quote
KenB Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Hi Jim Did you take the CPU out and replace it? If so - I would suspect something here. [ no need to take it out if you did not do so before :) ) Did your system used to beep before ? I have a tutorial for "No POST Beeps" Take a look here: click here Let us know how you get on. mij Posted October 23, 2013 Author Posted October 23, 2013 Yes, I somehow trapped the spring clip under the CPU. I have since rectified that but it still wont percolate. Perhaps this is the signal to get updated. Since i have had this i have fitted a new case fan, a CD/DVD drive, a power supply a mother board and last time a new hard drive. At the same time I got an external hard drive and duplicated the operating system with alll my current applications. Do I assume correctly that the CPU is fried? jim Quote
Plastic Nev Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Hi Jim, if that spring clip was touching any of the pins, there is a good chance it shorted something to ground. Normally there is no need to remove the entire CPU chip as just removing the heat sink and cleaning both surfaces before new paste is applied is all we recommend. Removing the entire chip can also risk damaging one of the pins when being replaced, there are so many it is easy for one pin to miss the hole and bend sideways. That if you are lucky might be the case here and worth removing to check that hasn't happened Jim. Now you have had it out, it isn't likely to get worse pulling it out again to check all pins are OK, not bent, or one missing as that also can happen, it breaks off while being removed, or after being bent putting it back. if there is a bent pin, carefully straighten it, then be ultra cautious putting it back so as not to bend it or another. If still nothing after that, just in case you disturbed something else earlier, have a good check, sometimes best to remove and replace, all the other plugs and connections on the motherboard. The link Ken provided doesn't work at the moment as we are having problems with live links, so if possible copy and paste into the address bar, this link. http://s13.zetaboards.com/kenspchelp/topic/6964867/1/#new Nev. mij Posted October 23, 2013 Author Posted October 23, 2013 It looks as if the worst has happened Nev. I am naturally heavy handed and seem to be losing all the dexterity i use to be able to muster. Even worse i need specs for everything - at least 3 pairs, if not 4. This job taxed that bit of me that groused about it all the way. It looks as if i should save some of the bits which may common and bung the rest. I don't game at all but i do a lot of viewing of art on youtube and a lot of reading/viewing on wetcanvas. So a fairly innocuous mundane pooter will suit and there seem to be plenty of those on Amazon. thanks very much for the help, i'll be back with another problem soon LOL. jim Quote
Plastic Nev Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Hi Jim, sorry to hear it is beyond it as far as your concerned, however I saw further back you already have the vital stuff saved on an external hard drive, so at least nothing lost there. I recommend you save at least the hard drive from the old one, being fairly new it should give plenty of life if you buy a caddy or enclosure. You will also be able to rescue any newer data from it as well as the older stuff and transfer to the new computer. The only thing will be programs will have to be installed from the original media they came on, or if downloads and were kept as the downloaded file, the original file can be transferred and used to reinstall on the new computer. best of luck Jim. mij Posted October 28, 2013 Author Posted October 28, 2013 Hello Nev. I ordered one from amazon which is not supposed to arrive until next Saturday but it arrived today. I have been busy putting in all the stuff in and “un-installing PUPs” that despite my diligence seem to get through. Anyway lots of questions which will arise from this exercise alone. Yes I did fit a new hard drive in the other machine not long ago. I also got an external hard drive on which I saved a duplicate of my hard drive but as that was 32 bit I assume wont be any good for this one which is 64 bit and has 8GB of RAM. Thank you for answering one of my questions already – it was that I need to download the programs from their respective sources before moving across the recent data. I'll be back soon. Jim Quote
Plastic Nev Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Hi Jim, in what form did you save the previous, was it a system image, or was it a complete clone? If an image, not a lot of use as images are compressed, however if a clone, then everything will be readable and can be transferred. However, the old drive can also be read anyway, all you need is either a simple adapter to USB, or an enclosure to USB, once the useful stuff is transferred, it can then be reformatted and used as another external drive if in an enclosure.
