mij Posted November 7, 2013 Author Posted November 7, 2013 (edited) Thanks very much for all of your inputs. I am torn on the practicality of throwing money at something so old but I am equally interested in getting this thing going. I have asked a question on ebay of the seller of a mother board like this (P5BW-LA) whether there is a processor as per his photo so will be interested in his reply. If he says yes I think I'll renovate the old machine, it has to be a learning curve for me. Perhaps a good home for it will turn up. Do you mind if I do this with your guidance as I don't think I can do this without? Jim Edited November 7, 2013 by mij Quote

mij Posted November 7, 2013 Author Posted November 7, 2013 Hi Jim We will help where we can - no problem :) Thanks for that KenB. I had a reply form the ebay seller saying that was a socket protecter not a processor. I thought it was too good to be true. Anyway I'll try to get a motherboard and see what I can do with this. jim Quote

mij Posted November 14, 2013 Author Posted November 14, 2013 Hi Jim Keep us posted :) Will do KenB though as this month and next are expensive times, I might delay this somewhat. Sort of spread the cost over a couple of months. Jim Quote
mij Posted January 2, 2014 Author Posted January 2, 2014 Christmas is now over and I am ready for the next stage. I got the motherboard from uncletang in China on ebay for £39.00. It was here in 5 days! He says it is brand new so hope all is well with it as it has been here 4 maybe 5 weeks already. I am glad that I have some photos as I may have forgotten where the plugs go Shall I carry this thread forward or would you prefer I start another? I wish you and all your helpers a happy, healthy and peaceful 2014. Jim Quote
KenB Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Hi Jim, Happy New Year to you and your family :) That seems a good price for your m/board. Continue here - it will keep all of the relevant info together. Good luck with the re-build. mij Posted February 15, 2014 Author Posted February 15, 2014 Life has got in the way. Have to take SWMBO to her aunts funeral in S.Wales. Go on Tuesday and hope to be back late on Thursday. Also have 2 grand sons to entertain/keep busy on Monday. They leave on Tuesday morning. Where does the time go. I assume I just fit the new motherboard, connect it up and let it beep to tell me all is well with that stage? jim Quote
KenB Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 Hi Jim Fit the old CPU to the m/board. You will probably have to remove the heat sink to do this. If you do you will need to clean off the old thermal paste with some rubbing alcohol ( any pharmacy ) and apply a very thin, even, coat of new. Arctic Silver or similar. You can use the edge of an old credit card to do this. Once you have the CPU in I would assemble the m/board into the case. Make sure you keep the stand-offs ( spacers ) from the old board. Use these to mount the new one. You can add the 20(4) way connection from the PSU at this stage. If you switch on now you should get POST Beeps - if you do this is good. Switch off at the wall again - touch the metal chassis to discharge any static in you. Assemble the rest of the components. You can check after each stage if you wish. You should get POST Beeps. Finally add the hard drive and DVD CDROM I can't remember is this is exactly the same m/board. If it isn't then your system is unlikely to boot up if you are using a HDD with Windows on it. Get back to me when you get to this stage - or if you have further questions. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
