I recently purchased a new Compaq desktop to replace my 9year old advent, this computer came preloaded with win8 which I am still trying to get my head around, When it became available last week I installed Win 8.1 thinking it may make it easier to use WRONG!!

For a start the only pro I can see is a start button on the desktop, which does no more than the windows key on my keyboard?

then there are the problems it caused....

When clicked the tiles on the menu simply spin around and go no where (other than the Desktop tile which is the only one that works?)

I have to enter a password every time I start up (Did not need to do this before)

I have to physically reconnect to internet each time I start up but the only way I can do this is by going into I.E then using the trouble-shooter to fix the connection.

most online video clips will not play (just keep getting error messages)

I reckon if I knew and used the system as well as I did XP there would be numerous other niggles as well but as I am still learning there are loads of apps I have not worked out yet so are not in use anyway.

I have done a little research and it now appears there is no way of removing this so called fantastic upgrade,

unless you guys know better?:)

Would doing a total reset get rid of the problems (I realise I would spend a good few hours reloading and downloading programmes and apps but other than that most of my required Data is also elsewhere.)

Hi,

I am afraid that you are not alone.

There are thousands of people experiencing problems from blue screens to problems with IE and lots more ( as you are experiencing )

The situation is so bad that M$oft has pulled the upgrade and state that they are working on a remedy :)

If your system is usable I would wait to see what ( if anything ) M$oft come up with.

There is a thread on "answers.microsoft.com" that runs on to 4 pages.

Significantly M$oft have posted only once in reply to lots of complaints.

You have to smile at "Answers" :)

Do you have a full retail copy of Win 8 ?

With regards to your internet access try turning Flight Mode on - then off.

Blue Fn button + the "F" key that has the (((i))) symbol.

This turns off the Wireless Adapter then on again ...... effectively re-setting it.

This isn't a fix as such - but it is quicker than using the trouble shooter.

( I am using Win 8 and get this problem from time to time. This seems to fix it. )

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Hi Guys,

Thanks for replies,

Grandad, if win 8 or 8.1 will restore to a previous date as other win OS's do I cant find it so I do not think it does, the only thing I could do is, if I had a backup restore to that,

but hey guess what?:o

"Blue Fn button + the "F" key that has the (((i))) symbol"

Ken where do I find these symbols as they are not on my keyboard?:(

Armageddon, thanks for that, will see what the upgrade is supposed to do?

Hi again the Blue Fn key is usually located next to the " Windows " key the one with the little squares on it and the "F" keys are located along the top of the keyboard F1 to F12 one of them will have a little blue pic on for wireless

Hi Guys,

Thanks very much, Ken your correct, I do not have those symbols on my keyboard, and though the on screen keyboard shows the FN key there is no notification or blue F key.

I have managed a system restore which is I think back to the date I installed 8.1, it has not removed 8.1 but has cured the problems with the wireless connection and my apps are working again.:)

I can not find the 8.1 upgrade but as things appear a lot better now I think I will leave well alone? none of the so called cures for the secure boot is not configured message on the bottom right of the screen have so far worked so guess I'll have to put up with that for a while,

again thanks for all your help:smile:,

Hi again

Good to hear that you have, at least, partially solved the problem.

I assume that M$oft will come up with another update at some point which should ( hopefully ) correct the rest.

Thanks to GRANDAD for suggesting the "system restore" - I don't think I would have gone down that route as I knew that 8.1 would not be removed.

Just to add and for others benefit as well, Windows 8.1 is to some extent similar to service pack installs on earlier operating systems, such as SP1 for Windows 7, or the three service packs issued for XP as an example.

In all cases, these delete all previous restore points when installed, but automatically create a new restore point straight after the install.

No doubt Microsoft don't want you to be able to return to the previous service pack version for some reason.

Nev.
