john-the-plotter Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 I have just changed Broadband supplier from Tiscali(talk talk) to plus net. My old set up was with a Sagem modem that just plugged into the pc with a USB connection. Now I am with Plus net I wanted to go wireless so before I changed the service I purchased a TP-link TD-W8968 wireless router and a TP-link TL-WN822N wireless usb adapter. Once I recieved confirmation from Plus net that my service was active, I proceeded to install the router and adapter as per their instruction CD. This is where the trouble starts. The router and adapter install OK but then the next step tells me that I should have three lights lit or flashing on the router. power light, this is lit, ADSL light comes on after a couple of minutes, WLAN light doesn't come on. USB adapter will light the wps button but when I hold the button it cannot find an internet network. So I cannot go onto the next stage , which is to log on to the tp-link website to complete the installation. I Know the line is in order because I have checked this with plus net. Also in order to connect to the internet I am now using my old Sagem Modem so that is a double check that my broadband line is working. PC is running Windows XP with sp3 Firewall and Antivirus have been disabled for the install. What am I doing wrong ? I have double and triple checked the instructions. I am totally new to Wireless broadband, but have used my other broadband for years. By the way I have tried my router both next to the PC and downstairs which is where I want it and It makes no differance. Quote
KenB Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Hi John I think that you have established that the fault does not lie with your ISP. It could be that the wireless function is disabled from within the router software - or switched off. Looking at an image of your router - is there a switch / button at the back to turn WiFi on and off ? You say that you bought a TP-link TL-WN822N wireless usb Have you installed the software for this and connected the device to your machine ? Try switching the router off at the power socket and leave for a minute - then switch back on. Did you get an ethernet cable with the router? If so - can you access the internet if you use this direct from the computer to the router ? I just read a review that said the 4 ports were behind a sticker and also that a cable was provided. The manual for your router is here click here Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! john-the-plotter Posted October 25, 2013 Author Posted October 25, 2013 Hi Ken Thanks for the reply. Before I read your email I decided to investigate further. Looking in device manager I found two items with yellow question marks against them These were ethernet and wlan. This has happened after I reinstalled windows and didn't realise that I needed to reinstall these items. I have now been to the ASUS website and installed the software for these. I am now able to get a step further but not all the way. I still don't get an adsl light on, although I did have on at one point for a short while. I still couldn't configure the connections so I gave up and switched off. when I tried again NO adsl light. I am back to using the old modem at the moment. I have turned off the new router so I will give it a try later to see what happens I feel sure I am following all the Tp-link instructions, so I am baffled. Any further suggestions. Thanks John Quote

john-the-plotter Posted October 25, 2013 Author Posted October 25, 2013 Hi John Is there an on/off button at the back? If there is - is it on ? Already switched on I have it connected to the pc via Ethernat cable at the moment. POWER light ON and solid ADSL light NOT on WLAN light ON and solid LAN light On and solid Phone connection works, becuase I have a line Quote
KenB Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Hi John Thanks for the confirmation. Next question; Do you have filters on every device that is connected to the phone network ? You should have been supplied with at least two with the router. Is the router connected to the main telephone socket? Try unplugging everything other than the router from the phone network. Can you confirm that you have re-set the router by switching it off for 1 minute please? john-the-plotter Posted October 25, 2013 Author Posted October 25, 2013 Let my describe my phone set up. Bt incoming socket downstairs with filter attached and phone plugged into that. A extension cable to temporary take the broadband upstairs to where the pc is. This plugs into an anti surge protector and out to the router via another filter and a phone connected to that. I have unplugged both phones, switched off the router for a couple of minutes and on again. I have also unplugged the ethernet cable from the router. So all that is plugged into the router is the power supply and the phone cable. What I get is just as before.Power light on and solid, wlan light on and solid, but NO ADSL light. I have to keep plugging the old modem back in, in order to get on the net to reply, this has worked for years through the anti surge and filters with phones attached. Quote
KenB Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 I am now confused. Initially you said: ADSL light comes on after a couple of minutes, WLAN light doesn't come on. USB adapter will light the wps button Now you are saying .... POWER light ON and solid ADSL light NOT on WLAN light ON and solid LAN light On and solid If you take the router downstairs and connect it directly to the main telephone socket so that there is just the one filter and switch on the ADSL light should light up. If it doesn't try swapping the filter with another one. I know you said that you had connected the pc to the router via the ethernet cable - did you have a connection with this set-up ? Plastic Nev Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Like Ken, a little confused regarding filters and just where they are. There should not be any filters connected between the telephone line and the router, the filters are there to stop data interfering with the telephone hand set and should only be between the telephone line and the telephone itself. If a filter is connected between the router and the telephone line, that will be why no signal showing for ADSL. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. KenB Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 This is the setup that you need: http://www.tpg.com.au/images/img_cabling.jpg There shouldn't be 2 filters in the same line. Some newer BT sockets have a filter incorporated and don't need a second external one. john-the-plotter Posted October 26, 2013 Author Posted October 26, 2013 Sorry if I have seemed to confuse things: but what I have said is how it is. At first I was getting an ADSL light and now I am not. I have done nothing other than try various plugging and unplugging of connections. I have the router connected via a filter as you show, and with or without the router being connected to the PC I do not get any ADSL light lit up. It does flash on and off once as the router starts up but after that no light. I have tried leaving the router switched off for long periods and the trying it again but that makes no differance. I don't intend to have the router connected via the ethernet cable, as I am using a wireless usb adapter. I have tried the pc connected via the ethernet cable to see if that made any differance but it didn't. Like you I am completly baffled as to why I doesn't work. Surely if I just have the router connected to the filter and power supply but not the pc, then the adsl light should be lit. But isn't. My Bt socket does not have a built in filter so I use an external one. I would assume that the filter is Ok because I am usinging it to connect to broadband through modem ( new router is not connected when I use this) But I have tried another filter just incase. The only differance between the set up you show is that I am using the wireless adapter instead of the ethernet cable. Quote
KenB Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Hi John Your last post explains the confusion :) I am coming to the conclusion that the router itself is faulty. Did you try the router connected directly to the main socket and ALL other devices on the phone network disconnected ? The router can be connected directly to the phone socket ( no filter ) just to test the ADSL Try this - connected directly with nothing else on the phone network to interfere the ADSL light should be on. Can you possible take it to a friend's house who has broadband and plug it in there? This would let us know for certain. If the ADSL light is on there then it is something to do with your line and ISP ( I know that you can connect via the old Segem modem ) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! john-the-plotter Posted October 28, 2013 Author Posted October 28, 2013 Hi Ken Followed you advice, about testing the router on someone's line and results were the same. This morning I spoke to Tp-link uk on the phone and they came to the same conclussion that the unit could be faulty. I have been and exchanged the unit at Argos. Now I get the ADSL light on as well as the others. I have then followed the tp-link instructions to configure the unit. That seems Ok and it says that I am connected to the internet. But when I go into a browser it say cannot connect to the server. Tried Firefox and Internet explorer. I think I may have some settings wrong somewhere. Here is what the windows test says. I got this far by moving the router next to the pc and connecting via the ethernet cable. Should I now be able to move the router back downstairs and connect via the usb wireless adaptor Many thanks John Quote
KenB Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Hi John I got this far by moving the router next to the pc and connecting via the ethernet cable. Your connection is OK using the cable - but not the wireless adapter. Is this correct ? but when I go into a browser it say cannot connect to the server. I assume that this is when you are trying to use wireless? Please do the following: Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > System Click the + next to Network Adapters 1. What exactly is listed 2. Are there any yellow exclamation marks next the any of the devices ? =============== Please do the following: [ No need to do this if your wireless adapter is not listed in Device Manager or there is a yellow exclamation mark against it.] Start > Run ....type in .....cmd .....hit ENTER At the command prompt type .......... ping 192.168.1.1 [ there is a space after ping ] You should get 4 packets sent and 4 received ( no losses ) Do you ? If not ..... type at the command prompt ... ping 127.0.0.1 Does this complete without error ? john-the-plotter Posted October 28, 2013 Author Posted October 28, 2013 Firstly although I get an internet connection with either wireless or ethernet I cannot connect to the net and get this message server not found cannot connect to google.co.uk ( this is set as my home page in Firefox. I have also tried internet explorer and get a similer message.) The connections listed are 1394 connection ,disabled,firewalled,1394 net adapter. Local area connection , Firewalled, Marvel Yukon Gigabit ethernet 10/100/1000 base T adaptor, copper,rj-45. Wireless network connection 2 Connected 300mbps wireless usb adaptor. Wireless network connection 3 Not connected ,Firewalled Asus 802.11b/g Wireless lan card ( I am using the usb wireless adapter instead of this) None of these have a yellow exclamation mark against them. The Wireless network that it shows connected to is tp-link-74c276 wpa/wpa2 channel 1 2.4g Ping replies Reply from 192.168.1.1 Bytes =32 tim 1ms ttl=64 It is the same on all four lines. Quote
KenB Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Regarding the ping .... you should see something like this: Microsoft Windows [Version 6.2.9200] © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. [ 4 packets sent - 4 packets received ] It is the same on all four lines. I assume by this that you do - but just checking :) Check that you have the IP Address and DNS Servers set to "obtain automatic" From the Start menu, select Settings, and then Control Panel. Double-click Network Connections. For a wired network connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and select Properties. For a wireless network connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection, and select Properties. From the General tab, make sure Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) v4 is checked, and then click Properties. Select Obtain an IP Address Automatically, and then click OK. 6. Make sure the DNS option is set to automatic too. john-the-plotter Posted October 29, 2013 Author Posted October 29, 2013 GOOD NEWS Ken I have sucess. After last night, I had the idea; what if I try running the software again, and it worked. Maybe I had only run the software on the faulty router and not this new one. Thanks Ken for all the help and advice. John. Quote
