GRANDAD Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 (edited) I received a phone call today from my daughter re a friend of hers—here goes. She is doing college work which she has kept a back up of on a data stick [sorry don’t know the size or make at the moment] When she has plugged this unit into her laptop it says that the unit must be re-formatted. Is there an easy way to recover this data apart from putting it into PC world or the like? Her knowledge like mine will be VERY limited. Thanking you in anticipation. Edited November 13, 2013 by GRANDAD Quote
KenB Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Hi Is there an easy way to recover this data apart from puttingit into PC world or the like? Ask your daughter to try the memory stick in another computer to see if she gets the same error. You say it was used as "backup" ....... do we assume that the files are saved onto the hard drive too ? GRANDAD Posted November 14, 2013 Author Posted November 14, 2013 `Thanks KenB but done that ie told her to try a different pc/laptop still awaiting results. The usb data stick belongs to a friend of hers who is doing a course and I think all the back is done on this stick . Hence I think the HARD DRIVE is a no no. She is desperate to retrieve the info. They are 150miles away so all contact is by phonr, thanks again. Quote
KenB Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 It may be easier to ask them to register here and continue with this thread :) I have a feeling that the memory stick has been corrupted or died. There are a couple of pieces of software that we can try - but I wouldn't hold my breath. [ For the benefit of others reading - anything that you value should be saved in at least 2 different places ( hard drive / memory stick / DVD ) ] Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! GRANDAD Posted November 15, 2013 Author Posted November 15, 2013 Semi panic nearly over Some work is retained on the hard drive, some in emails sent and some can be re downloaded with a net result that most but not all of the work can be recovered in different ways. Lessons have been learned! As you say Ken one should ALWAYS double backup important documents or whatever. My Daughter emails me important stuff so hence I keep work for her. Her friend will be doing similar in the future. Thanks for the help and advice. -- Ps the USB stick is still duff, she will re format. Quote
KenB Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Ask her to try this piece of software before she formats it - ( could even try afterwards as long as it has not been overwritten ) click here Try Recuva first. GRANDAD Posted November 15, 2013 Author Posted November 15, 2013 That looks pretty good. 5* :D I have an external hard drive which came up' need to reformat' which I did at the time as it was not important, and hence lost files, however as a test I have ran this file Recuva [after updating to v1.49.1019 [64 bit]] and yip it’s found 14files and they run.! When you’ve got Ken who needs PC World Thanks a lot. I have forwarded this onto my daughter so she can advise her friend. Its good to be a part of Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Quote
