STEPHENCARTWRIGHT Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 When I switch on my desktop PC running Vista it shows that wi-fi internet access is available but when I try to connect the modem crashes (internet light goes out) and I have to reboot the modem. My other devices (laptop and smartphone) work ok. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing this please. It started two days ago. Before that it worked ok. I have tried a System Restore but it has not cured the problem. Thanks Steve Quote
KenB Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Hi Steve and welcome to ExTS I have added "Vista Home Premium" to your profile info - if this is incorrect you can change it later :) I have to reboot the modem. Do you get a connection after this with the Vista machine ? Do you know if you have "Obtain IP Address and DNS Address" set to automatic on this machine ? STEPHENCARTWRIGHT Posted November 14, 2013 Author Posted November 14, 2013 Hi Ken Thanks for your swift reply. Rebooting the modem doesn't cure the problem. The laptop and smartphone can use it but as soon as I try to access the internet with the Vista PC it crashes again. Until I try to access the internet everything looks alright - the icon in the bottom right corner says that I am connected and it is available. I have checked the settings and it is set to automatically obtain the addresses. Steve Quote
KenB Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Hi Steve Is it possible to try an ethernet cable direct to the router from this machine ? This would indicate if it was a distinct wireless problem or not. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! STEPHENCARTWRIGHT Posted November 14, 2013 Author Posted November 14, 2013 Hi Ken Two items are listed D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G510 Wireless PCI Adapter SiS191 Ethernet Controller No red or yellow marks. Both say they are working correctly - although I do know the Ethernet Controller doesn't! Steve Quote
KenB Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Hi Steve Try downloading the driver for your LAN card from here; ( agree to the terms and conditions first ) click here Suggest you d/l it to your desktop - easier to locate afterwards. You should then delete the old SIS 191 from Device Manager by right clicking on it - uninstall. Reboot the machine. Install the new drivers. It could be that the card is damaged - but this is worth a try. If this doesn't sort the LAN ( ethernet ) connection we will revert back to the wireless option. STEPHENCARTWRIGHT Posted November 14, 2013 Author Posted November 14, 2013 Perhaps I'm being a bit thick here but how do I download the new driver when I can't connect? Can I download it to the laptop and then copy it across in some way? Steve Quote
KenB Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Sorry Steve...I should have added a bit more ..... Can I download it to the laptop and then copy it across in some way? Yes. Download to a memory stick. Actually - you can run it from there on the problem machine. STEPHENCARTWRIGHT Posted November 14, 2013 Author Posted November 14, 2013 Sorry I'm not very good at this. I have downloaded the driver to a memory stick and plugged it into the Vista PC but I can't find how to load it. Help please! Steve Quote
KenB Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Hi Steve If you click on the folder you will probably see a whole pile of files - possibly other folders too. You are looking for one with a .exe extension. Probably setup.exe .... Click on this. It should install from here :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test

I found it by accident when I noticed my wife was on ebay on the Vista PC. She had logged on with Explorer rather than Chrome which I use. I de-installed and re-installed Chrome and all is now OK. Thanks for your help Ken. Quote
