berniel Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Hello I have a VERY sick, very old IBM Thinkpad. I'm getting the dreaded blue screen Quote
KenB Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 [h=2]Can I do this?[/h] Do What ? Along with the Blue Screen you should have a STOP Error. Can you post the error code please? It may give some indication as to your problem. Do you have the XP installation disk for that machine ? berniel Posted November 24, 2013 Author Posted November 24, 2013 Hi KenB Unfortunately, something went wrong with my original post and only the first sentence appeared. I'll make a note of the error code when it next (inevitably!) appears. My main question, though, concerned how I could obtain a list of all the files from my laptop that would allow me to transfer Word to a new laptop I've ordered. I can locate the main file, of course, but common sense tells me that there will be others (like Fonts) that would need to be extracted, too. I think I don't have much time to do this as the problem with my current laptop seems to get worse every day. I don't now have the XP installation disk. Thanks for your interest. Quote
Synapse Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 I could obtain a list of all the files from my laptop that would allow me to transfer Word to a new laptop I've ordered You can´t do it. Word needs more than files to run. When you install Word it links itself to so many parts of your system, eg your browser, your email possibly, plus it installs a mass of registry entries to get each component talking to the others, with the correct settings and at the correct time. There are programs you can buy that come with a cable to connect old and new computers together, which will scan and transfer software to a new system. I have not had good experience with transferring licensed software such as Microsoft Office programs. Plus you are probably moving to Win 7 or 8, which is another unknown. You would also need a stable old system to run any potential transfer. Quote

berniel Posted November 24, 2013 Author Posted November 24, 2013 Thanks Synapse Actually, I'm staying with XP Pro. I've tried out Win7 on my wife's laptop and I HATE it! Quote
Armageddon Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Just 1 question , Why stick with XP - Pro , Microsoft are ending support for Xp in April 2014 Quote Google is your friend We are all members helping other members. berniel Posted November 25, 2013 Author Posted November 25, 2013 As I already mentioned, I'm sticking with XP because I'm comfortable with it. I've tried out my wife's laptop with Win7 and its 'look and feel' is dreadful! On the subject of support for XP ending next year, surely that's ONE good reason to join forums like this? I see that there's even a forum for Win97 and 98, for instance. Quote
KenB Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Hi, surely that's ONE good reason to join forums like this? We will still answer questions relating to XP - even after Microsoft give up on it. :) The point Armageddon was making is that as MS withdraw support those of us who still use XP ( and I am one ) will be more vulnerable. There is one train of thought that says that hackers/spammers are queueing up to cause countless XP owners countless problems. I doubt that this will be the case - but we will need to be aware that critical updates will not be available and problems could, and probably will, be more evident with XP users than they are at the moment. berniel Posted December 3, 2013 Author Posted December 3, 2013 I'm sure you're right, but I'm prepared to take my chances just now with a system I'm happy and comfortable with. Quote
