Hi to one and all,

I have a problem that is driving me absolutely nuts. I have been unable to connect to the activeshooter.co.uk website since Thursday of this week. The problem I believe is my end as every morning, since Thursday, I have received my daily email updates from the forum, including today. This leads me to believe that the site is not down. I have, through the command line, pinged activeshoooter.co.uk at least twice a day with the following results:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]Copyright © 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Users\Ian>ping activeshooter.co.uk

Pinging activeshooter.co.uk [178.79.160.68] with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.

Request timed out.

Request timed out.

Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 178.79.160.68:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss)

My laptop did an update around the time this issue occurred, so I reset my pc back to the time before the last update, but this made no difference whatsoever. I have tried turning the wi-fi off on my mobile and tried using its data connection to access the page, once again unsuccessfully. I am at a loss as to how to re-establish communications with this website and any advice or suggestions on resolving this problem would be extremely helpful.

Hi Ian, I just tried this website on this link and it worked OK

http://activeshooter.co.uk/content/

There are a lot of possible blocks at your end, including, your ISP, your firewall, your antivirus, your browser, or even a hosts file.

Firstly try that link I gave, if no good, then providing you are using a modern router which will have its own firewall, try turning off you own software firewall, then antivirus and so on.

Also if none of those work, ring your ISP to check they are not blocking the site as well.

Thank you for the replies. I have tried everything you have suggested Nev, without success I'm sad to say. I have contacted Sky and they have opened a case regarding my problem and they will look into my issue. They say this normally takes 72 hours, so no solution until Saturday at earliest. I logged into the site perfectly when I was at my daughters yesterday, but all this does is leave frustrated and annoyed.:( I will let you know if Sky manage to resolve the issue. Thanks for your assistance.

Hi

Try the following:

Start ....type in ....cmd.....right click on the cmd.exe that appears top left of screen > click on "Run as Administrator"

At the command prompt ( black screen ) type ....

tracert http://www.activeshooter.co.uk ...... [space after tracert]

Then hit ENTER

Your text should look like this:

C:\Windows\system32>tracert http://www.activeshooter.co.uk

Tracing route to activeshooter.co.uk [178.79.160.68]

over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 2 ms 1 ms 2 ms 192.168.1.1

2 16 ms 16 ms 18 ms 88-104-32-1.dynamic.dsl.as9105.com [88.104.32.1]

3 16 ms 16 ms 16 ms 85-210-252-133.dynamic.dsl.as9105.com [85.210.25

9 27 ms 26 ms 25 ms diamond.surehosting.co.uk [178.79.160.68]

Trace complete.

It will not be exactly the same as we live in different parts of the country ( I think )

If yours times out early on we may be given an indication as to where the problem lies ( or not :) )

This link will explain how to copy and paste the tracert results ( it does say IPConfig /all ...... but the method is the same )

Accessed the site with no problem, so it seems the problem is your end.

Let's do a quick check and see if there's any security conflict going on:

Download Security Check from here or here.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please copy and paste the contents of that document in your next reply.

Thank you for your assistance gentlemen.I can confirm that I am still unable to open the activeshooter.co.uk website. As I remember I was in the process of replying to a thread on activeshooter.co.uk and when I clicked to submit my reply, it failed to do so. It was at this point that activeshooter.co.uk became unresponsive and that was the last time I was able to access the site.

This is the report from the task you asked me to perform Ken. As you suspected the task did time out early and the results are below.

Hi

This is the last 2 hops from my tracert:

8 25 ms 23 ms 23 ms 212.111.33.234

9 27 ms 26 ms 25 ms diamond.surehosting.co.uk [178.79.160.68]

This is the last 2 from yours

6 9 ms 9 ms 9 ms 212.111.33.234

7 * * * Request timed out.

Both get as far as the IP 212.111.33.234 ( which is a server on Telecity Group )

Yours, however, does not make the last hop to diamond.surehosting.co.uk [178.79.160.68]

The traceroute is not making the last hop. This could be because the Telecity server is not forwarding the request or that Diamond-Surehosting is blocking the request.

It could be that Activeshooter are blocking your IP Address.

If you can log on with another computer is there an Admin or Moderator that you can ask to check specifically if your IP Address is being blocked.?

Sometimes sites ban specific IP Addresses - some even block ban ..... i.e. all IP Addresses in a range.

I am not sure that this would stop a tracert to the site - but it is worth asking to make sure that you are not being blocked in this way.

For info - your IP Address for the above posts is 2.122.220.1

You can check on the problem computer by typing "What is my IP Address" into Google.

============

Also try this: [ before contacting the site ]

Go back to the elevated command prompt .... ( "Run as Administrator" )

Type in .... ipconfig /flushdns ....... ENTER

[ space after ipconfig ]

Try pinging the site again ..... if this is successful try the connection

Try deleting cookies

Open Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options >click on the Delete box

make sure that "Cookies" is ticked > Delete

Try the site again.

Hi Ken,

I have tried all you have suggested Ken, without any luck. I have been able to login to activeshooter.co.uk on my daughters pc (she is virgin customer and I am with Sky). Whilst I was waiting for my wife at the doctors today, I successfully logged into activeshooter.co.uk using my mobile phones data connection.:o:o (not been able to do so since last Wednesday either) Providing I switch off the Wi-Fi on my phone and use my data connection, I'm able to log into activeshooter.co.uk, although this is dependant of mobile reception, which at my home is the pits.

I will contact one of the mods on the forum the very next time I am able to log in and ask them to check it out for me. This is so frustrating.

Thanks Ken.

Can you try Activeshooter from another connection ( your daughters ? )

This would confirm if it was machine based.

Have you tried turning off your Firewall and Essentials real time protection ?

If you do - remember to turn them back on again.

Glad to hear the security check showed no conflicts. I have tried turning off my Firewall and Essentials and to no avail I'm afraid. I can take my laptop to my daughters the next time I go and see if the problem is machine based. Emailed all the results I have posted here to activeshooter.co.uk to see if they are able to make any progress with the problem.

thanks for help gents.

Update.

Well I've ruled out the laptop as being the problem. I turned off my laptop's Wi-Fi and connected it to my mobile and used its data connection and activeshooter.co.uk came up instantly and I remained on the site reading and contributing to threads for just over 2 1/2 hours, without any problems.:D:D:D Well that's not strictly true, as posting threads was a little slower than normal, but given my mobile has a dreadful signal indoors, I was overjoyed at the result. Disconnected laptop from my phone, reconnected to my home broadband and goodbye activeshooter.co.uk. Hope Sky get back to me real soon with their findings and maybe I'll be nearer to a solution.

Hi Ian, it still may be a blocked IP address at Active Shooters end as well. Your mobile phone will no doubt have a different IP address that isn't blocked. However considering you have sent e mail to both them and Sky, it is a matter of wait and see, at least for now you know you can use your phone, though watch your credits as some phone companies charge and quite heavily for internet use.

Hi

Try this:

Change the Preferred DNS settings to 8.8.8.8.

Alternate Settings - 8.8.4.4.

Ignore this from the link:

  • Preferred DNS server: 212.159.13.49
  • Alternate DNS server: 212.159.13.50

Leave the Obtain the IP Address at "automatic"

If you still cannot connect - change it back to the auto setting.

Hi guys,

I've tried changing the settings you suggested and no joy. No reply from either Sky or activeshooter.co.uk so I will be contacting them both again tomorrow. As for the data connection on my mobile I've used half my monthly allowance, so will have to keep an eye on what I'm using. Thanks again guys and I will update you as I have news.

Sorry for the delay in replying gents, but I was waiting for my ISP to get back to me. In the end I had to contact them again and the long and short of it was that they believed it was an activeshooter.co.uk problem. I informed them that I had performed the tracert and at what point the test started timing out. Oh, oh was the reply. Give us 24 hours and we will check it out. That was Tuesday evening this week. Lo and behold I fire up the laptop on Wednesday morning, tried to open activeshooter.co.uk, as I have done everyday since the problem started, and bang, instant access. Just goes to show that without the tests you guys had me perform, I'd be no nearer a solution. Have had no report as to what the "issue" was, but I'm a happy man now.

I would like to thank you all again for help and patience. I would ask that you mark this post as solved please. Many thanks guys.
