cockpheasant Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 My ISP (virgin) has withdrawn its integral security package and farmed it out to a company called F-secure which is free initially then pay..cheapskate way of increasing profit! F- secure has installed ok on my windows7 unit also my old XP unit. With my Vista laptop it refused and said Norton 360 was installed (it isn't). Norton was on briefly three years ago and uninstalled with proprietary measures. I took a peek in the reg and lo and behold there are still the dregs of the old norton unit. I have tried Symantecs removal tool together with several others to no avail and am now up against it with either a manual cleanup or total reinstall of Vista. Any help with the system of manual removal would be very welcome folks!! Quote
KenB Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 Hi, One of our security guys will probably be able to advise you better - but try this until they reply....... Download and install Revo Uninstaller - click here You want the FREE version Run it. If it finds Norton then click on this to un-install. There are various options - select the "Advanced" This will remove all Registry entries. Chances are it will not show up .......... Starbuck Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 A few odd registry entries shouldn't have thrown up an error stopping an install. It may be that there is still reference to Norton in the WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation). Sometimes when AV's are removed.... the reference doesn't get removed. We see this sometimes when Combofix is run and it shows multiple AV entries when actually only one is installed. Try Kens suggestion and see if revo will remove the reg entries. My ISP (virgin) has withdrawn its integral security package and farmed it out to a company called F-secure which is free initially then pay. What sort of 'free time' do you get? Quote Member of:UNITE
cockpheasant Posted November 29, 2013 Author Posted November 29, 2013 Thanks both, I shall report back. The "Free" time offered is for 12 months, then £7.50 per quarter thereafter. Not a bad deal I suppose, but quite an increase and with a relatively unknown (to me ) organisation. Sigh! another knock to the old age pension outgoins. Quote
KenB Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Let us know how you get on. The "Free" time offered is for 12 months, then £7.50 per quarter thereafter. Starbuck will be able to recommend a good - totally free - Antivirus. I know we both use Microsoft Essentials - but there may well be a better one now. Certainly DO NOT pay for an Anti-Virus :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
Starbuck Posted November 30, 2013 Posted November 30, 2013 I know we both use Microsoft Essentials - but there may well be a better one now. Yes i still use MS Security Essentials on one of my systems. Another runs Bitdefender Free and the third runs a paid for version of Emsisoft AntiMalware (for which i receive a free license from Emsisoft) MSSE is fine for Vista or Win7 but i don't recommend it for WinXP as M$ will start to block the definition updates in the New Year .... to try and get people to stop using XP. Not a bad deal I suppose, but quite an increase and with a relatively unknown (to me ) organisation. The "Free" time offered is for 12 months, then £7.50 per quarter thereafter. F-Secure is a known company and do produce some good programs. F-Secure Internet Security is presently rolled out for about £26.00 so £7.50 a quarter is a bit over the top. As Ken said.....Certainly DO NOT pay for an Anti-Virus as there are plenty of 'free' alternatives to be had. Quote Member of:UNITE
cockpheasant Posted December 1, 2013 Author Posted December 1, 2013 Many thanks once again folks, it will be interesting anyway to install a freeby on the Vista unit and see how it compares. Meanwhile, I shall continue to look for a good copy of Windows 7...it seems that the big retailers (pc world ) now only sell windows 8 and looked at me with pity for wanting an out of date o/s. Quote
KenB Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 If you do decide on a free A-V then be sure to remove the other one. 2 A-Vs will cause problems on your system.
