[Solved] W7 install growing rapidly

W7 was in and running for about 9 months ... as part of a bug fix investigation had to do a clean install

It is W7 64 bit Ultimate +Sp1 on a 120GB SSD (PC has 16GB Physical RAM and i5 processor)

 

Previously the install with only a very limited number of Apps on C:\ was around 65GB

User profiles majority of Apps are all stored items are on separate D:\ and E:\ drives

 

However The C:\ used space is growing at alarming rate .... over 4 GB today.

I have run CCCleaner to check for temp files etc, and Malwarebytes for Adaware all fine

 

To help I have now disabled Hibernation - powercfg -h off

and deleted Sp1 backip files - dism /online /cleanup-image /spsuperseded

This has gained me a little room now back down to 118GB

 

 

Is there something growing for no reason ? .......... I remember I had a similar problem a few years ago with XP ... a file was growing, and not being deleted on power off .. had to manually delete and got 50% of my HDD back.

 

Any suggestions ?

I have seen this happen with an Anti-Virus auto-saving scans.

Which AV are you using ?

Further to answering Kens question which will be a help to know.

 

After that and just in case the original system wasn't fully reformatted, there may also be quite a lot of files and folders labelled Windows Old, they also will be taking up space, let us know if you find any labelled as such.

 

Also if you can't see the extra files that are building up they may be hidden folders and files.

 

To be able to see them, and please do this only as a temporary thing and revert back to hidden afterwards as being hidden is a level of security.

 

Click the start then type in the search bar Folder Options. and click on "Folder Options". Click the view tab and scroll down the list to Hidden files and folders, then transfer the dot to "Show hidden files and folders"

 

You will probably see a lot of folders and files with odd names after that, don't as yet delete any as some may be vital for the system to work, however do let us know what you do find so hopefully we can advise what to remove or delete.

System was a full clean install

I have now found the issue ...

Using "Folder View" it showed over 50% of HDD being taken by program data ... when i looked in that folder (Folder view was superb to find fault) it showed 99.96% of this was Kaspersky.

Investigated and found Traces were enabled ... turned that off ... and deleted all traces - now have 50GB space

In addition I also moved page file to separate HDD saved me 16GB there as well

 

 

Seperate issue also found via a Tech note that Kaspersky has 'idle scannin'g enabled, that will seriously wear out an SSD ... so disabled that as well.
