Item is fine BUT they still signed us even though we said no to a maintenace/help monthly payment!

Only found out when our credit card bill came in yesterday. Managed to stop that and will check in a few days that we have been refunded.

For other forum members advice.

Various big stores are getting famous for this ploy of trying to push extended warranty/insurance on products they sell.

Even though you may be as explicit as possible in informing the sales staff you do not want this, they still try to sneak it through.

The only thing I can say and advise, is right at the point of sale to watch for and be ready to stop any additions put onto the bill and till receipt before leaving.

I even had one member of staff try to persuade me to have it by saying you can always ring up and cancel it when you get home. By that he meant ring my bank and cancel the direct debit, not the store.

If I had done it that way, he would still have got his commission as it is their commission they want to earn by pushing these deals through.

Hello

Heard nothing from Top Man or Branch Manager.

Credit card Fraud Dept. wanted a written statement from us. Apparently so much of this going on now

Computer has crashed 3 times. Tried to get it back. Went back to factory settings. I didn't have a clue

Took back to shop. They said they would sort it. Came back but lord knows what they did. Definitely not even like when I first had it

Lost quite a few things - but had them on my old computer

Still keeps loading and loading and that little blue circle going round and round. Then it says updating do not turn computer off

I wait then after a little while says reversing updates

When I turn on - a little message in the corner of the screen says my computer will turn on after 2 days updating - but it works

So back to using my old computer even with the whirring, the clonking ......rather than new one.

I have started to look for someone local with good recommendations to come and help me sort it all out and put on the bits I want

So be warned buying from Curry/PC World .... unless you know what you are talking about

Hi Louise

Contact them again and tell them the problem has not been resolved.

Tell them that the computer is not serviceable and is not fit for purpose.

You want a replacement.

If they refuse contact Trading Standards and Citizens' Advice.

You have rights - you just need to know them :)

Do not give up on this.

Will add a note tomorrow let you know - but I do think I will have to go to TS

When they had it in before they said that it was because I added Windows XP. They tried to say my fault

Be back tomorrow

Thank you

Told him did not believe him

Told himthe machine crashed 3 times, been back to store and is still rubbish and is not working correctly.

Can we discuss you giving mea refund for underhand selling and selling a computer not fit for purpose

He said that they do not give refunds

I said ok I will have to go to Trading Standads. He said well madam you will have to buy a report from your own .... (sopmething or other - could'nt hear) and take the machine and the report back to the shop

He then said I will make a note of your comments

Good afternoon- and he was gone

Just switched on new machine ...... I have 79 updates and the small white circles are going round and round and it says in the bottom orner my comuter willlstart in 1 day

So using my old machine

Installing Office ( genuine Microsoft software ) will not cause any problems of this nature.

Especially if it installed OK.

He said that they do not give refunds

Oh dear !!

He doesn't know his consumer law!

Not sure why you should have 79 updates - these can take a while ..... but 24 hours ???

you will have to buy a report from your own .... (sopmething or other -

I suspect that would be computer repair technician.

I doubt it would come to this.

Give trading standards a ring and see what they suggest.

Hello

Computer still not working correctly from last visit to their workshop. Made an appt. and went to trading standards. They have agreed to help - but may take some time

Since computer came home it is so sensitive! You only have to move the keyboard and it turns itself on.

In the meantime ........... I have spent hours on this thing having to learn different bits and bobs it comes back with; then the crashing etc

So I am asking first. Am I allowed to ask on the site if anyone in my area with patience and listens can help me sort this out so I can use it. I do not play games, videos anything like that. Just normal emails; sending pics etc. just everyday stuff

As mentioned before spent a lot of thinking/running around hours on this computer and by the sound of it - it may take ages for TS to contact firm, waiting for their replt and on and on it goes

I work more on my old computer even though it wheezes; clonks, clicks etc.

Thank you

Hi Louise

I am sorry to hear that you are still having problems with your new machine.

Am I allowed to ask on the site if anyone in my area with patience and listens can help me sort this out so I can use it.

Not sure what you are asking ....... do you want somebody to make a house call ?

I have a general idea where you are from your IP Address ( just north of London ? )

I don't know of any of our staff who are in that specific area and we have never done this ........... once the precedent has been set others could expect it too :)

We have infinite patience here - if you would like, we can try to resolve some of the problems with the machine.

You should be aware that if you start trying to fix it yourself you may be voiding the warranty ( I know you don't have any faith in this ) but you don't want to do anything that gives the supplier a way out.

I suggest that you contact them and get them to state - in writing ( even an email ) that it is OK for you to follow our advice to try to correct the problem that they obviously can't - without invalidating the warranty.

( there are no guarantees that we can either )

=================

You only have to move the keyboard and it turns itself on.

This could be a BIOS setting.

I have just skimmed back through your posts - I don't see a Make and model number for your computer.

Let's start with that.

( accessing the BIOS will not invalidate any warranty :) )

==========

I have a feeling that this could be a very long process.

We will stay with it as long as you are prepared to :)

Hello

No I would not expect someone to make a house call. I had in mind if a company in my area. I can then go in and explain what is happening; the trouble using computer; the different layouts it has come back with. I just want a firm or company that I can trust and would go to them

Yes the area is near enough - this is why I did not want to advertise my exact home town

As to warranty!!!! I doubt if they are going to roll over immediately by the sound of it. Apparently they keep going until many customers just give up ....... I know how they feel

My machine is ASUS CM6730 13. This cost me £329.99.

When you mentioned BIOS. Immediate panic. Oh shoot here we go ..... this is how they talk to me at Currys!!!!

Right this is what I would like

I would like to get rid of the tiles when you turn the machine on. Due to a couple of strokes cannot use properly so everything I do is with a mouse.

I would like the opening page to have a screen saver; I would like my icons I use a lot down left hand side ie documents; Microsoft word 2003; aol

Would it help if I took photos to show you what I would like at each stage ie when I take a photo and download this; when I write a letter; when I go into my emails. That way you can see what I would like

I am so sorry.

Hi Louise, no need to be sorry to us, we are here to help and actually a shame I am so far away in Lancashire. However that of course means I cannot possibly know any reputable dealer or repair shop in your area, Ken also is similarly placed as he also is not too far away from me. If we do have other members in your area they may be of more assistance regarding that if they pick up on this subject.

As far as Windows 8 is concerned, I know very little as I have yet to even try it, however I do know there is a program that can be downloaded for turning the main screen into similar to Windows 7 or even XP, Ken I think does know more than I do about that program though.

Not sure why you should have 79 updates - these can take a while ..... but 24 hours ???

I fetched a laptop home from work yesterday evening, ( for a colleague ) needed Win7 and all updates reinstalling ( over 250 updates)

Took it back today all completed.

So 79 updates should be a breeze.

Oh no - sorry.

Office I downloaded

What version of Office was this?

and where did you download it from?

Hi Louise

Let's take one step at a time.

Most of what you ask for in your last post is possible.

When you mentioned BIOS. Immediate panic.

We will explain - simply.

If you don't understand - ask :)

Let's prioritise.

You said earlier that the machine turns on by itself if you touch the keyboard.

Is this the same for the mouse too?

===================

I would like to get rid of the tiles when you turn the machine on.

As a "work-around" for the moment - The Windows Key ( bottom row on the left ) + D will take you back to the desktop at any time.

===================

Can you outline the things that are annoying you in order of importance and we can take them one or two at a time :)

===================

You may like this ......... Classic Shell

It is a piece of software that will give you some features of XP and Windows 7

[ I have just installed it to try :) ]

If you want to try it I suggest that you create a restore point first.

This will allow you to return your system to a date before Classic Shell was installed - just in case :)

Point the mouse curser to the top right corner of the screen

Click on the magnifying glass

Type in ....... create a restore point ..........hit ENTER

Click on the "Create a Restore Point" box

Click on the "Create" box

Give your restore point a name "Before Classic Shell" identifies it as Windows auto creates restore points.

Classic Shell is here - click here

It is free.

You can select XP or Win 7 options.

I have mine set to Win 7 at the moment and the Start button for instance gives me what I get with my Win7 machine.

The Win 8 Apps have disappeared and I get the desktop only - which is what you want.

This is totally reversible by un-installing Classic Shell - failing that a system restore :)

Remember - Windows Key + D will take you back to the Desktop at any time.

Dear Ken

Thank you much for your step by step!!!

I have printed this out and will work through it

It does not matter if I mess up as mentioned before I tend to use my old faithfull machine as more confident on that than this one

Wish me luck, deep breath and here I go

Hello

I did manage to download from the printout. Had a job finding it on my computer - but I did. It was working ok for a few days - so chuffed with myself.

Then it crashed and went back to factory settings ..... again

So had to try and retrieve everything again. So fed up with it.

Currys have replied. They say machine is fine. Copied their worksheets to Trad. Standards. Next step up to me.

Someone recommended a "computer" chap to me. Not sure - bit too "you want this and it's a lot better if you do it like this" type. Instead of listening to me. Bit slick for my liking

Another chap runs a computer shop not far from my home town. Went over to have a chat. I took photos of my old computer screen and printed these off to show how I want my screen to look when I turn on, when I write a letter etc - so none of this "you want this" etc. He said he could put it on and the Microsoft word 2003 etc. It would take 2 days and cost approx. £160. I said I would think about it

Is this good or bad?

Thank you

Louise
