mcd840 Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 hi, i have an "acer aspire M1610" desktop pc. the computer come from the factory as windows vista, i wasnt fussy so i formatted and stuck xp on it. its not working so good anymore so i have bought a copy of windows 7 home premium, a graphics card (i want better as it only has on board graphics as standard at the moment) and a more powerful power supply unit as the factory one is not good enough for my new graphics card. I was told that because my computer was made to support vista then it will support windows 7 no bother as it takes up less memory than vista. anyway back to the subject, my internet connection is wireless but because of the distance from the broadband hub to my pc the speed / signal is crap at best. so i want to run a lan cable under the floor to the back of the hub to the back of my pc. i am trying the small lan cable that come in my broadband box as i have brought the pc to beside the hub but the pc doesnt even recognise its plugged in, theres a green light on aswell where its plugged in the the rear of the pc and also a light on the hub saying its connected. i assume its because theres no driver installed so i went onto the acer website and downloaded the lan driver for 32 bit xp but it doesnt seem to have done a thing!! acer only offer the lan driver for this computer on vista and xp so when i install windows 7 on it where will i get a lan driver as i really want my connection to be through a cable direct to the hub rather than wireless... help ... thanks Quote
KenB Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 Hi You have me confused. You have posted this in the Win 8 forum and your thread title says "Windows 8 / acer lan driver" BUT - the text says that you originally had Vista - then put on XP - removed this and put on Win 7 ( or are thinking about it ) Which is it ? Win 7 or Win 8 ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test

Win 7 or Win 8 ? ah sorry ken, i should have put this in xp section. i originally had vista which im sure most of you will agree is crap, i removed this and went back to xp, now i want to upgrade to windows 7 so i have bought a copy which i do not have yet. im just worried i wont be able to find a lan driver, i have been on the acer website and theres lan drivers there in both xp and vista to download for my comp but neither seem to work for me. ( acer made the aspire M1610 model which i have available in xp and vista ). i dont know what i will do when i install 7 in regards to a lan driver. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Hi, I reckon the best bet is to wait till you get that Windows 7 disk, install it and you may find the LAN works OK, being the better operating system that it is, it just might have the correct generic drivers that will work with the hardware. Let us know how you get on with it, and if needed we will go further. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. KenB Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Hi I have moved your thread to the Win 7 forum - it is more appropriate here :) ( Changed Win 8 to Win 7 too ) Download Speccy and run it. It may give specific details of your LAN card and we may be able to get Win 7 drivers from the manufacturer's site. If it does - post the details here. click here You want the free version. As Nev says - Win 7 comes with a host of drivers pre-installed. It may sort itself out. KenB Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 this is all it says in regards to LAN It doesn't tell us much does it ? :) If the LAN connection is actually a card and not integrated into the motherboard you could get the information off the card itself. Failing that - it is always possible to buy one ( cheap enough ) and pop it in to an available slot. KenB Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 i will wait and see what happens when i install windows 7 That is probably the way to go :) There is another option: You can use the house ring main to extend the wireless signal. click here ( example only - not a recommendation :) ) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! mcd840 Posted December 28, 2013 Author Posted December 28, 2013 That is probably the way to go :) There is another option: You can use the house ring main to extend the wireless signal. click here ( example only - not a recommendation :) ) hi, update, i installed windows 7 and a bigger power supply unit to power my graphics card i bought to do away with the onboard graphics and then problems, when the graphics card was installed the computer started running v. slow even with a more than powerful enough power supply unit, we now susspect the "intel celeron" chip isnt good enough to cope with the new graphics card so we took it back out and all went fast again so we done a complete re-install. decided just to put up with the onboard graphics instead for now as i see i slight improvement with them now its running windows 7, and also regarding drivers for lan, on board graphics, chipset, sound, wireless card etc...windows 7 done it all, even my wireless signal strength seems to have improved! i used to have to go on the acer website and download all of these. if i decide to use my graphics card i bought then i think i will have to get a new motherboard, cpu, and larger memory. i was told the celeron is quite old. KenB Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 Which graphics card did you install ? Did you disable the on-board graphics after installing the graphics card? You can do this in Device Manager. Could be a conflict causing the slowness. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! mcd840 Posted December 28, 2013 Author Posted December 28, 2013 with any luck it was the both of them fighting and i can get the onboard switched off and the card installed as its so much better with the card. Quote
KenB Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 Hi are you saying my old celeron processor should cope with this card?? This is not a high-end card and, for normal usage, the cpu should cope. If you are playing games then you may well have problems as neither the graphics card or the cpu will cope with more graphics intensive games. we assumed that after installling the graphics card it would automatically take over from on board graphics Some installations automatically disable the on-board - some don't. take a look here it may help - click here the computer has 1gb memory This is the minimum requirement for Win7 - 32 bit. If you have 64 bit then 2 GB is the minimum that you should have. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! mcd840 Posted December 29, 2013 Author Posted December 29, 2013 hi ken, we disabled the onboard graphics in the device manager, installed the graphics card and drivers and same problem, everything runs slow as hell!! so now wondering if its the cpu ? we have since removed the card and reverted back to on board graphics and all is very fast once again. thanks again. KenB Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Hi If the drivers I linked to are different - try them. Also try - Start - type in .....devmgmt.msc ......ENTER Click on the + next to Display Adapters > right click on the Nvidia software > Properties > Driver > roll back to the previous installed driver. KenB Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Hi This is from the nvidia site: Does your PC have a CPU powerful enough to playback high definition Blu-Ray Movies? It doesn’t matter, the GeForce 210 can playback any Blu Ray Movie with any modern CPU4. The last bit .......CPU4 This was explained as being "Intel Atom CPU or better" The original Atom CPU ran at 200 Mhz and the best runs at 2.0Ghz Your 1.8Ghz CPU should be coping OK. Please confirm that you have disabled the on-board drivers when you are trying the Video Card itself. And that you un-installed any old drivers before updating to newer ones. KenB Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Thanks for confirming that. could memory be the issue It is unlikely. The video card has its own on-board memory and for normal use this is usually enough. You could remove the RAM modules and try them just one at a time. It could be that one of them is faulty. If the system is still the same after this I will ask one of our moderators to see if he can offer any more advice :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Plastic Nev Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 Hi, with the new graphics card installed and the computer running slow, click start, then type in the search bar, "Task Manager" You should then see "View running processes with task manager" Click that, then when it opens, click the "Processes" tab, can you take a screen shot of what is there in the list, it might give a clue as to what is slowing things down. Also take a look at the performance tab, and if the graph shows as very high, let us see that as well please. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help.
