KenB Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Hi and welcome to ExTS Remove the RAM modules. Clean the copper contacts with a pencil eraser and replace JUST ONE module. Try to boot up normally. [ With your particular machine the keyboard needs to be removed. Take a look here - click here ] If you get the same problem - shut down and swap the installed RAM for the other one and try booting up with just this one in place. Let us know how you get on. craig1711 Posted December 20, 2013 Author Posted December 20, 2013 (edited) Done exactly that today with no joy , the laptop will not boot a windows disk either which I find strange. After I removed the ram when attempting to get the recovery partition it wouldn't go past windows loading files , not sure if booting from usb is worth a go ? Plastic Nev Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 When you say it won't boot from a windows disk, did you first check or change the boot order to the disk drive as first? You will need to enter the BIOS to find the boot order by pressing F2 at start up as soon as the Dell logo appears, or continuous tapping of the F2 key again from first start up. To be able to boot from a USB source such as a bootable volume on a pen drive, you need to check if USB is an option and to change the boot order to USB, also in BIOS. Nev. craig1711 Posted December 20, 2013 Author Posted December 20, 2013 Yes I changed the boot settings but it just goes to a black screen then after 30secs boots the hdd, tried with a recovery CD I burned earlier and a windows 7 pro disk I have on my desktop Quote
Plastic Nev Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Hi again Craig, can you tell us please firstly can you get into the full BIOS system? and secondly what does it say about the type of BIOS system it is, usually at the top or very bottom of the first page. It may be of help for Ken when he comes back on line. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here.
