No1 offspring has (had) a small Acer lap-top (do you call them Note Pads) called a "One".

This eer "One" has given up the ghost she's had it about four years and given it a right bashing so it's definitely had it - - well it has now as I've taken the hard drive out of it !

As an aside isn't it strange how these thing happen just as Christmas is coming up - do you think it's something built in by manufacturers on a time clock - after all they will know a conscientious parent even an OAP couldn't let offspring be without a functioning lappy over the festive season - could they ? - nice way of generating end of year sales too. .

Anyhoo - away from corporate conspiracy theories and back to the plot - - - Offspring had some documents and photo's on the hard drive which she'd rather like back - picture the scene - aged parent leaps to the rescue and says "have no fear I'll get em back for you - if I can't I know some nice folks who can tell me how".

So - I know I can buy wired up thingy's like enclosures and USB connectors but whats best ?

Don't want to spend loads - a few quid would be great - think it's a 2.5 inch HD - it says Toshiba HDD2H85 on the label on the drive and has two separate connectors in a line - one of 15 connections and one with seven connectors.

So dear Father Christmas what can I put in Offspring's Christmas sock to help get back the info - not too expensive please as the new lap-tops already been purchased.

I put them on to make us all feel a little more festive :)

Back to your question:

Yes - you need an external enclosure [ caddy ]

There are different types so be careful to order the right one.

Your daughter's hard drive is a SATA ( older ones are IDE ........ different connections )

You need a 2.5 inch SATA Hard Drive to USB enclosure

If buying from Amazon check the reviews and also check where it is coming from - some of these sellers are not located where you think they should be.

I bought a really cheap one some time back and it is still OK.

Once you have everything off the drive that you need you can format the drive and your daughter will have extra portable storage for backing up photos files etc.

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Dear Santa,

I followed your advice and went on the Web and found just the thing in my local PC World (have thing about Amazon not paying their taxes) brought it home plugged in the hard drive and - - - wonder of wonders it worked !

Will parcel it up in nice Crimbo wrapping and present to offspring on Christmas day as a little extra present and she can then access all the photo's etc she thought she had lost - result.

What was it - - - as you suggested a hard drive enclosure for a SATA 2.5 inch HD came with a twin USB cable with a wee pouch to keep it in and even a screwdriver to put the whole thing together all for the princely sum of £6.99 - - - another result.

So many thanks Dear Santa at least you know you won't have to be coming down our chimney this year - - it's all already taken care of.

Yours, H.B.E.
