KenB Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 I'm unable to download the manual ?? Any specific reason? On your motherboard at the end where the video cable connects are 2 small jumper pins. One is labelled CLRCMOS The other - CLRPSWD Something like this: http://en.community.dell.com/resized-image.ashx/__size/550x0/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/3514/2742.sysbd_5F00_jumpers.jpg It is this one [ CLRPSWD ] that you need to remove. 1. switch off at the wall 2. remove the jumper from the 2 pins 3.Switch on and let the machine attempt to boot. At this stage if you are asked for a password leave it blank Remember to put the jumper back again - switch off at the wall again. ============ floppy diskette missing This is unimportant but can be corrected in the BIOS later ============ Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Jezw Posted December 30, 2013 Author Posted December 30, 2013 Hi Ken, thanks for your quick response. I can't download the file this android i'm using won't accept it. I've followed your instructions but still not accecpting pw at windows log in. The MB is slightly diffent from the one you've shown, probably earlier, there is no jumper on CLRCMOS although the pc worked fine. Any thoughts other than chuck it? Jez Quote
KenB Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 The MB is slightly diffent from the one you've shown, probably earlier, there is no jumper on CLRCMOS Are you saying that the pins are there - but there is no jumper in place to remove ? If this is the case the password will obviously be the BIOS one - which will not be set. Your only other option is to get hold of an XP Pro disk. Jezw Posted December 30, 2013 Author Posted December 30, 2013 Ok Ken I thought that would be the case. I give my thanks to everyone whose helped and of course to FPCH. Thanks everybody. Jez Quote
KenB Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 You could give Dell a ring - 0844-444-4712 - and ask if they still supply a recovery disk for your system. They will ask for the Service Tag number from your machine. It is a 5 to 7 letter and number code that will be on a sticker on the back or side of your machine. KenB Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Hi Randy - what about safemode? Worth a try - I think it will still ask for a password ...... it is a long time since I played with XP :) Jez ... Switch on and constantly tap F8 about once per second. When you get to the Startup Options try 1) Last Known Good Configuration 2) Safe Mode Let us know how you get on. Jezw Posted January 2, 2014 Author Posted January 2, 2014 Hello Ken/All, well i've tried about everything, last known con, safe mode con/alt/del and no admin account comes up. I'll give Dell a call they may have some answers, i'll let you all know how I get on. By the way the jumper pins are there no jumper. Regards to all Jez Quote
KenB Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 By the way the jumper pins are there no jumper. Yes - I noted this earlier. Posts #27 / #28 If this is the case the password will obviously be the BIOS one - which will not be set. Let us know how you get on with Dell. They should supply a recovery disk which will take you back to factory settings. There may be a charge for this. Jezw Posted January 3, 2014 Author Posted January 3, 2014 Hi Ken, yet to call Dell will do later i've tried dir ser restore mode and checked the drive, Samsung SP2504C and get the following error code " Fail return code 7" is it still worth getting a recovery disk? Jez Quote
KenB Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 Hi Fail return code 7 There is some debate re: this - it could indicate a failing drive - it could also indicate that data on the drive cannot be read. Either way there is obviously a problem. I would run a diagnostic test on the drive using SeaTools - click here Click on "Downloads" after reading the PDF information. If you can connect the hard drive to another system download the "Windows" version to the computer that you intend to connect the hard drive to. If you need to test the drive in situ then download the DOS [ ISO ] version. This will need to be burned to a CD. There is a PDF file that explains how to use both. The short test is the one to go for. This tests the drive itself - not the operating system files. It could be that the drive is OK - in which case you can use it again to re-install the Operating System. If it fails then you need to decide if you want to buy a new hard drive and the XP disk from Dell. The other option is to buy a Win 7 O/S - but you would need to check your system to see if it is compatible ......... ......and to do this you need to download the software to an installed operating system. ( going round in circles :) ) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
