Hi guys... got my son an Ipad, he is having trouble with the signal getting to his bedroom (god forbid he should ever come out of his room, and come downstairs to interact with ppl) anyway to try my best and keep him up there... I need some kind of powerline ethernet adapter kit?? so I have a Virgin rooter, I have never had one of these before, do I plug it into the mains, and then a wire (of some kind) from that to the rooter, and then the plug upstairs, and can that then be wireless? or do I HAVE to have a wire from that to his ipad??? thanks guys

I need some kind of powerline ethernet adapter kit??

Take a look at this - example only - click here

It is wireless ( wired if necessary .... but this puts an ethernet cable around the house which is unsightly )

You would need a wireless router and a wireless adapter in your son's computer.

There is another option:

This uses the house wiring to extend the range of the router.

I think, in the UK, it depends on how you have the mains wiring arranged.

In my home I have 2 ring mains.

One for upstairs and one for downstairs.

If the router is downstairs and you wish to extend to upstairs then I am not convinced that this will work if you have separate rings.

Suggest that you google the two devices and read the reviews.

( these are examples only and not recommendations )

Perhaps Plastic Nev can throw some light on this from an electrical point of view ?

Indeed as Ken suggests, if there are two ring main circuits, the signal upstairs may not be quite as strong as if it was one ring main throughout the house, though it may still work. The signal has to go through to the main fuse or circuit breaker box to then go out to the other ring main being the reason for a weaker signal. However I do remember seeing someone not having too much problem with that though.

Ok thanks for that guys, #2 looks best, and I see what your saying about the ring main, I have a fuse for upstairs and one for downstairs, so maybe I have a 2 ring???

If one fuse is for the upstairs sockets and the other for downstairs, then yes. The only way to be sure is to take one out and find out which sockets have gone dead, same for the other.

Found this review on Amazon ....

It works but only across the same circuits. If you have RCDs protecting your fusebox then it the adapters can only work across one circuit which means you can only use these for half the house. Emailed their technical support who agreed this was a limitation - astonishing this is not made clear in the sales literature. Other manufacturers (more expensive) like devolo don't have this limitation.

You may wish to do a bit more Googling to discover if it is really what you need.
