Woodworker Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 This may seem a very basic question but I'm at a loss how to reset Internet Explorer so that part of my desktop isn't always visible at the top. This has only just begun to happen and each time I open it it's reduced in spite of my having pressed F11. Previously, the icons were hidden until I right clicked. I've tried various settings and reset IE to defaults using Avast but with no success, I apologise if this seems trivial but I like to utilise as much screen as possible. Thanks, David :) Quote
Plastic Nev Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 Hi, this transparent top of the Explorer isn't actually a fault of Internet explorer itself, it is actually adjusted in the main settings of all windows. Close explorer or reduce it down, or just minimise so you have a blank area on the desktop, then right click on it, a menu should appear, click on "Personalise", when that window opens right down at the bottom you should see a square called "Window Colour", click that, you should then see a choice of window frame colours, a tick box for "Enable transparency" and also a slider control for "Colour intensity" slide that over to the right and the transparency should become a more solid colour, or remove the tick in the box to make it fully coloured. At the bottom of that window click on "Save changes" before exiting. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. Woodworker Posted December 30, 2013 Author Posted December 30, 2013 Thank you Plastic Nev - you've taught me things I didn't know :) However, at risk of seeming a pain, what I'd really like to do is get rid of the coloured area altogether until I move the pointer to the top to cause the favourites, restore buttons etc to appear. You can see what I'm getting at from the snip I've taken from my desktop machine. Happy New Year, David :) Quote
Woodworker Posted December 30, 2013 Author Posted December 30, 2013 Hoorah - I Did It !!! I'm very pleased to report that rather than just pressing F11, I held it down for a time while the screen juddered and gave me what I've been after. If only I'd done that in the first place, I'd have been saved much frustration and effort trying to set restore points etc but all's well that ends well. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Ah, I see what you really wanted now, keeping F11 pressed actually makes it cycle back and for between the two as I found, so it should just be one click of the F11 key to change, however like anything else not used very often, the F11 key may have become sticky or a poor contact. Anyway, you have it sorted now and all the best to you for the new year. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. Woodworker Posted December 31, 2013 Author Posted December 31, 2013 Thank you Plastic Nev and a happy and healthy New Year to you :) Like me, my Packard Bell lappy is creaking but I'm still wiping egg off my face - Haha! Time will come to replace it but each time I become interested in a particular make and model, I read user reviews on Amazon and get put-off. If I need a new one in a hurry, I'll get another Packard Bell but if anybody can suggest a decent lappy for under £600 I'd be interested to consider. Apologies for going off topic. All the best, David :) Quote
Plastic Nev Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Hi David, Packard Bell are now owned by Acer, so in effect any PB bit of kit is an Acer in disguise, my desktop is a PB, with Acer branded motherboard inside it. However, don't be put off by that, Acer are as good as any other and also allow free download of full service manuals, which is something other manufacturers will not do. I will add the service manuals have full instructions regarding dismantling the equipment and how to remove and replace all parts, as I found regarding my Acer Aspire laptop. Given a screwdriver and a little experience, and you can have the entire thing spread out in its bits on a table. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Woodworker Posted December 31, 2013 Author Posted December 31, 2013 Thank you again Plastic Nev and I'm interested to learn that you also have a Packard Bell. The main reason why I chose mine was merely because I was looking for a new lappy and liked the look of it, added to which, the price was reasonable. As an elderly and virtually housebound person, being online is such a great asset and I really don't know how I'd now cope without being able to shopping and banking etc online. I love my lappy but I realise it could pack up at any time, in which case I'll want to get a replacement quickly. I'll certainly look at Packard Bell and Acer and the fact that Acer own Packard Bell won't bother me in the least. Thanks again, David :) Quote
KenB Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 Hi Just to add my two-pennyworth .... I have 2 Acer laptops. One with Vista on that I have had for years and my new one ( Win 8.1 ) I have had no problem with either. Of course - there are always exceptions :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
Woodworker Posted January 1, 2014 Author Posted January 1, 2014 Thanks for that Ken, I always feel when reading customer comments on Amazon and such places that users who have difficulties are far more likely to post comments than are people who are satisfied. I've even seen rubbishing comments about computers because some users have difficulty getting to grips with Windows 8 which isn't the fault of the machine. All the best, David :) Quote
