Hi,

Recently I sent a message to computer technology company asking the following question:

how do I place Vista's BOOTMGR and mbr code onto a 4GB SDHC card to enable an 'anti-nasty' or maintenance program to run during bootup?

I received the following reply:

"You need to copy these files to the desired drive. You may have to go to control panel > Folder Options > View and click on Show hidden files

& folders. Uncheck - "Hide protected operating system files"

BOOTMGR – Found in the MBR this file boots up the Windows operating system

BCD (Boot Configuration Data) - is text file that lists the available OS found and tells the BOOTMGR where to find boot partition

WINLOAD.EXE- Loads the Windows Interface

NTOSKRNL.EXE- Windows Vista/7 Core Files

WIN.COM - Windows Vista/7 command file

HAL.DLL - Hardware Abstraction layer of Windows Vista/7

You need to copy these files to the desired drive".

In response I sent the following reply:

"Thank you for your recent reply informing me what files to place onto a digital camera card in response to my question 'How to place Vista's

BOOTMGR and mbr code onto a 4GB SDHC

card to enable any program to run during bootup'.

I did place the following files onto the card as instructed: BOOTMGR, BCD, HAL.DLL, NTOSKRNL.EXE, WIN.COM and WINLOAD.EXE.

Also, I placed Malwarebytes Anti-malware, without the programs uninstall, onto said card to see if it would run. But it DID NOT!!

Obviously there must be other drivers and/or files that I need to place onto the card together with the ones already placed onto 'it'!

So, the question is: what other drivers and/or files do I need to place onto the card to enable a program to run during bootup?

Hope you can help!!".

I received the following reply:

"Malwarebytes Anti-malware will not run unless you load Windows first then install the program!".

In response I sent the following reply:

Thank you for your recent reply. But I have a question that a Christian brother put to me on Sunday which I ask you:

"Why do you need to place the Vista operating system onto a SDHC card when it is already installed?"

In this case "already installed" means it is already installed on this laptop!

Also the Christian brother knows quite a lot about computers etc and I sometimes ask him for advice!

So, as we both do not understand please explain FULLY!

Thank you for your patience in this matter & do look forward to receiving a reply from you soon in the near future!".

But as yet I have not received an answer. So the question just above still stands and I would like an answer! Hope you can help!!:)

Thank you for your patience in this matter & do look forward to receiving a reply from you soon in the near future.

Hi and welcome ( again :) )

If I understand correctly you wish to scan your system before booting from Windows.

In your description you mention MBAM.

I would need one of the security experts here to confirm this - but I don't think MBAM is designed to run outside of Windows.

I can, however, offer you another option - MS Windows Defender Offline.

It can be installed onto a CD or Flash Drive ( Memory Stick )

You simply install the CD or F-Drive prior to switching on.

This should do the same job as MBAM would - if it could be run in this situation.

One of our security experts may be able to offer other options.

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
