Hi, we could do with some information please, firstly what make and model of computer, if you installed Windows 7 what was the previous operating system on it, do you know how much RAM is installed, and lastly can you tell us the type of sound system it has, is it the Realtek HD or the earlier AC 97?

hi, the computer is an "acer aspire M1610" it was intended for use with windows vista but i got rid and put xp on it and have since upgraded to 7.it has 1024mb ram and as for the sound it is the realtec hd audio. i posted previous that i also tried to put a graphics card in for superior graphics and do away with on board but that ended in failure regardless of trying all the points that were mentioned on here and couldnt get to the bottom of it so have put up with on board graphics and now this issue with the sound. if it helps the cracklings with everything, startup tone, media player, you tube.

thanks

Hi,

Which version of Windows 7, is it 32bit or 64bit, and also has it already got SP1 installed with it?

There are many odd reasons for the crackling sounds, though if the original driver is a 32bit one and you have the 64bit Windows7, might be a cause.

However it could just be a faulty driver anyway, even though it reports as working OK.

Go back to device manager, and find the Realtek driver, check that it says the driver version is 6.0.1.5983 or a higher number please, if different let us know first and what the version number says.

Then click "Uninstall". Then reboot the computer, Windows should then search for and reinstall new drivers.

If it can't, let us know and I will look for the current driver to download and install.

Hi,

has it made any difference though? or is the crackling noise still there?

If it hasn't done so, there are many other reasons for this problem of crackling.

So after a search I found this blog post from Corey, try his suggestions, if still no good look down the comments underneath, there are plenty of other idea's including turning off a part of Malwarebytes if you have the pro version, and even a download of the original Vista driver, any one of them might be the cure.

The trouble is that there are so many different things can cause that crackling noise, a program running in the background, even a mobile phone nearby can do it.

By now you may have a lot of things on the computer, but if not I would try a fresh install of Windows, just in case there is a problem in the operating system.

However one easy thing to check, is disconnect from the internet first, then turn off or disable temporarily all of your security, antivirus, firewall etc.

At least that will rule out them or not.

hi again, i tried what you suggested, d/c from internet then turn off firewall etc but no joy, i have just realised that i have had windows updates set to important only so i am downloading optionals to see if theres anything in one of them that on the off chance may cure the issse. one other thing that has been happening since installing 7 is when watching video on you tube i occasionally get a message relating to "shockwave flash player" (i think thats what its called!) and "stop / continue pluggin" ??

cheers!

It won't hurt to try this link, it will test you current shockwave flash player or prompt you to update it if out of date. If it needs to be updated and you allow it, be careful when it asks if you want to install Chrome, if you don't want the Chrome browser, remove the tick from the boxes.

i think i will just re-install windows, if that doesnt stop the crackling issues then god knows, i forgot to say the computer had a new power supply unit fitted before windows 7 was put on, it was only fitted to power the graphics card that the computer seemed to reject. could it be the power pack thats causing interference?

cheers

If you still have the older PSU and it still works, it is worth a try before you reinstall Windows. If it does turn out to be the PSU, that could explain why the graphics card wouldn't work if there is a fault on the thing. I know it is brand new, but there are always the Friday afternoon ones as they say.

If none of this does change anything, and that includes a Windows reinstall of course.

I can only suggest fully formatting the hard drive, then install Windows 7 and relevant drivers, then trying the sound straight after the reinstall, and if OK then, try installing your programs one at a time, check with each one.

Crackling and other odd noises can sometimes be a devil to find what is causing it as there are so many alternatives. I went through it with my old XP machine a good few years ago and it turned out to be program I had tried, forget which it was now, but it was running in the background and causing random clicks, it was hard work finding it was that, as it seemed OK when I first installed it.

hi, sorry, i tried the old one and same issue, im starting to think its an issue with the motherboard or the processer as it wont tollerate a graphics card being added regardless of the psu being more than capable and now the issue with on board sound so i have decided just to live with it for now, i have looked at some re-conditioned desktop "dell" pcs on ebay, ones that have been in offices and workplaces and alot of them have a superior spec to what i have just now and some are giving a years guarantee also, alot of them im looking at are the smaller "mini tower" (which i assume have the micro mother board) at the moment i have the normal size tower but that also has the micro motherboard - if thats what you call it! Am i better to just go for a full size tower with full size motherbaord? are there and dissadvantages to the micro motherbaords? are the full sized ones better ? i just like the look of the miniture sized tower.

cheers.

Hi, A shame we can't fix the noise, but as I said earlier there are so many different things that can cause it, including faults on the motherboard as you suspect.

Considering it is an older system that you upgraded with installing W7, plus the fact it won't take the graphics card does also suggest it is the motherboard.

So you may be better off in the end going for a refurbished machine. The so called mini towers do present some problems with fitting extras such as your graphics card due to size, and therefore the card won't go in, so be aware of that, otherwise there are some good bargains available in refurbished, and at least you will still have Windows 7.

If you went for new, as well as the cost you will have the problem of learning how to cope with Windows 8 as on the surface it is quite different.

hi again, some of the mini ones i have looked at have a graphics card allready fitted but i would need to fit my wireless card so then again i might be safer going for a full size tower and the ones i am looking at all have windows 7. are the micro motherboards more prone to faults or anything like that ?

thanks again.

Posted

I wouldn't think the micro boards are any more prone to problems than full sized, it is just the problem of finding low profile cards to fit them when needed.

Best of luck.
