Sebastian42 Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 In a WinXp/SP3 system that I inherited, I have done my utmost to eradicate all trace of the previous owner - and that MAY be why I now have a situation where I am denied access to TXT files stored close to the root [two subfolders down from C:\]. So I cannot read them, but oddly enough I can run EXE files stored in those same locations. Trying to take ownership of them results in needing to take a step I can not take, because the option is missing, namely "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" is MISSING from the Owner's tab of Advanced Security Settings of such an access- denied file. How can I get access to reading those text files ? Quote
KenB Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Hi There is an option to add "Take Ownership" to the right click menu when you right click on a file. click here This is specifically for XP. There is a download that you can add to your system to do this automatically. Scroll down to where it says... Alternatively, you can download the ready made Registry Entries and others files in one zip file : take_ownership_xp.zip. Download the ZIP file and extract the contents to your desktop. Then copy the files TakeOwnFile.cmd and TakeOwnDir.cmd to C: folder. And double-click on the add_take_ownership_xp.reg. Choose Yes when asked. If you get the installation correct you will see this when you right click a file http://cdn.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/image9.png Suggest that you create a restore point first - just in case. click here Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Sebastian42 Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 The solution the to inabilty to open TXT files because of 'access-denied', turned out to be a matter of first opening Notepad as an administrator, THEN opening the text file. KenB Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Hi thanks for the feedback. first opening Notepad as an administrator, THEN opening the text file. I don't understand why this should work - but if it did .....great :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Sebastian42 Posted January 22, 2014 Author Posted January 22, 2014 LATE BREAKING NEWS - when I checked the file associations for TXT, NO program was listed. After putting Notepad as the default, the problem disappeared. Quote
KenB Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Hi, You should be able to open the files in MS Word or Open Office too if necessary. Just change the file association or right click > Open With Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
