Hi, i got the bsod on my pc. After all else failed, i decided to reload XP. Stupidly i ignored the warning that an operating system existed on the partition and installed it to that partition. XP installed, but i still have all my old files on drive, which i cant access from shortcuts on start menu, but can if i go into my computer, click on C drive. Is there any way i can access them from desktop, by changing their shortcuts. Like they say, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Fran

Hi frannie;

As maynard said you can create new shortcuts or redirect existing ones in most cases.

What concerns me more is what type of reinstall you did. Did you do a repair or a nondestructive recovery. It sounds like it.

As such a reinstall of some programs may be needed. As well as updates.

What StartMenu Programs shortcuts aren't pointing to the right programs?

At least we know you still have access to your files. Am I correct?

oops sorry guys.what i didnt do a repair, or non destructive recovery. I was thinking of just doing fixmbr and chkdsk, but am lightweight. So I reinstalled xp from beginning so used existing partition. I thought it would overwrite all data on drive, and i was pleased to see all my stuff on there. Like you say start programms arent pointing to anything, but at least all my files are on there.

Hi Frannie

It sounds to me like you have set yourself a dual boot option here.

Right click on My Computer then choose Properties.

Hit the Advanced Tab then the Startup and Recovery box at the bottom.

In the Edit box on System Startup, copy and paste what it says, it should look something like this;

[boot loader]

timeout=30

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Yours may look something like this;

[boot loader]

timeout=30

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS.0

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS.0="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Get back to us with that information please.
