Lhey123 Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 (edited) After I re-install win 7 on the first partition which is C, i cant open my second partition (D). Every-time I tried to open D, a new windows appears and says " Access is Denied" I tried changing the drive letter, but nothing happens. I also tried to change the properties of the partition to take the ownership, but unfortunately it also didn't work. Please help me I have important files in that partition. Thanks in Advance. :) Edited February 14, 2014 by Lhey123 Quote

Starbuck Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Just poking my nose in here. We may get a little more information by running this tool. This tool lists all the disks, partitions and the detail of the partition. Note: There are both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of ListParts available. Please pick the version that matches your operating system's bit type. If you are unsure what you're system bit type is..... click Here for help. For x32 bit systems download ListParts32 and save it to your Desktop. For x64 bit systems download ListParts64 and save it to your Desktop. Double-click the downloaded icon to run the tool. Press the Scan button. It will make a log (Result.txt) on your Desktop. Please copy and paste it to your reply. Thanks Quote Member of:UNITE
Lhey123 Posted February 14, 2014 Author Posted February 14, 2014 Thanks KenB! Anyway, yes it does show up. Healthy (Logical Drive) Quote

KenB Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 Hi Your Disk Management looks normal - except ..... Do you have a DVD CDROM Drive on this machine. If so - this is usually D: and it should show in Disk Management. However there are a couple of things thrown up by the report asked for by Starbuck. 1. You have less than 3% free space on C: Partition. Drive c: () (Fixed) (Total:97.66 GB) (Free:2.93 GB) NTFS Windows needs between 10-15% free to function efficiently. I suggest that you try to create some extra free space. 2. You only have 5% free space on the D: Partition - whilst this shouldn't be a problem with access the partition and the drive is getting full. 3.This part of the log is confusing ... Partition 1 Primary 97 GB 31 KB Partition 0 Extended 200 GB 97 GB Partition 2 Logical 200 GB 97 GB The 200GB is showing twice - although elswhere in the log it only shows once. Starbuck has contacted the author of the software ( Farbar ) for clarification. Until we get an answer - try to create some more space on C: drive ( I doubt that free space is the cause of your access problem ) How did you attempt to Take Ownership of the partition ? Is this version of Windows Ultimate the original that was on the system - or have you up-graded ? Lhey123 Posted February 16, 2014 Author Posted February 16, 2014 Hi! I'll try to create more space. I tried taking the ownership on its properties and by the cmd (icalcs). Is this version of Windows Ultimate the original that was on the system - or have you up-graded ? I re installed Windows Ultimate, since I'm having a problem with the looping of "Windows Explorer has stopped working " Thank you very much for helping me. Quote
KenB Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 Hi I re installed Windows Ultimate This doesn't really answer the question. Was Ultimate on the machine originally or did you upgrade from Home say ? Do you have a DVD CDROM Driveon this machine ?. Can you see the files on D: partition in Safe Mode ? Constantly tap F8 about once per second after switching on. Partition 2: (Not Active) - (Size=200 GB) - (Type=OF Extended) This is confusing me too - Disk Manager shows it as a "Logical" partition not "Extended" We will have to wait until we get a reply from the software compiler. Lhey123 Posted February 16, 2014 Author Posted February 16, 2014 Hi, This doesn't really answer the question. Was Ultimate on the machine originally or did you upgrade from Home say ? Sorry about that Windows Ultimate was the original OS. I don't have DVD CD Rom drive. Can you see the files on D: partition in Safe Mode ? Constantly tap F8 about once per second after switching on. Yes, I can access the partition in Safe Mode. Windows needs between 10-15% free to function efficiently. I suggest that you try to create some extra free space. I now have 24% free space on the disk. Thanks! Quote
KenB Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 Thanks for the additional information - it all helps to build up a picture of your problem. Yes, I can access the partition in Safe Mode. This is an improvement. Can you open the files in Safe Mode ? This may help a little .... TakeOwnership.zip It won't let you take ownership of D: Partition but if you can see the files in Safe Mode ( but not open them ) it may let you take ownership of them from here. Download or simply Run the software and click on the install.exe file. This will do the rest. Simply right click on a file or folder to take ownership of and click on "Take Ownership" that appears in the pane. Try accessing the D: Partition after turning off UAC see here - click here Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! KenB Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 That is good news - was it the "Take Ownership" download or turning off UAC ..........or something else that did it ? Lhey123 Posted February 16, 2014 Author Posted February 16, 2014 I don't know, but I think it was the "Take Ownership". It's really a big help. Again, thank you very much. :D Quote

Starbuck Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 This is confusing me too - Disk Manager shows it as a "Logical" partition not "Extended" We will have to wait until we get a reply from the software compiler. Just to clear this up..... I have now heard back from the developer: We have Primary partitions and Logical partitions. The primary partition can have one file system. The system partition with boot components should be on a primary partition. But you can have an extended partition and divide it into more logical partitions. An HDD may contain only one extended partition; the extended partition can be subdivided into multiple logical partitions. In DOS/Windows systems, each logical partition may then be assigned an additional drive letter. The size of all the logical partitions together is equal to the size of extended partition. ListParts is more accurate when recording the drive structure as it showed the exact breakdown. If the extended partition had been divided into more partitions, then these would have been shown on the windows version of the drive structure. This something that i wasn't aware of.... so a learning curve for me. Thanks Quote Member of:UNITE
KenB Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 I am still confused .... ( it doesn't take much !! ) Disk manager shows the partition as "Logical" I know an Extended partition can be sub-divided but it would show up in Disk management as "Extended" not "Logical" or a series of Logical Partitions. There is only one showing here. Never mind - problem solved. :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
