I have 2 CD/DVD drives fitted to my PC and am unable to open the trays whilst running windows. If I press the eject buttons during the boot up sequence they work ok but as soon as wiindows loads they refuse to work. It would appear that there is some software running which is locking the drives but I can't find what's doing it. How can I determine what the problem is and resolve it.

Many thanks for any help as always.

Bob.

Hi Bob,

While waiting for an informed answer ... Right click My Computer > Manage > Device manager > Double Click DVD/CD-ROM Drives and see if your actual drives are listed.

On mine for instance it says ...

ATAPI DVD A DH20A4H ATA Device

HL-DT-ST DVD ROM GDR8163B ATA Device

Hi, first thing to ask is have you run any anti virus or malwarebytes scans just in case it is an odd malware causing it?

Second thing is to have a look in the task manager, and look to see if a strange process is running if you think it is some software problem.

On XP click start, then run, in the box type :-

taskmgr

then click OK or hit the enter key.

Click on the Processes tab.

Let us know what you find in both cases please,

Nev.

Hi Nev,

Thanks for that, I have run scans, everything seems ok. Task manager shows all sorts of stuff running, the most of which is just gobbledygook to me, however I checked out MNSAccessU.exe which is something to do with "CD Burner XP" I opened CD Burner XP and the drive then worked properly. Still working after closing it down but will wait till rebooting to try again. If it does it again I may just uninstall the program.

Many thanks.

Hi Bob, just what I thought, a burner program possibly thinking it has a disk in it to burn, therefore holding the drawer shut. If it gives more trouble, uninstall, then reinstall if you need it, it could be a corrupted program file that a reinstall should fix.

Hi Nev, How bl**dy frustrating. I uninstalled CD Burner XP and restarted the system, one of the drives was ok the other still locked. Reinstalling means I'm back where I was at the beginning, both drives locked on startup but both can be freed up if I start then close CD Burner XP. I suppose I'll just have to accept that as a work round.

Regards,

Bob.
