A couple of weeks ago I bought a HP Pavilion 15-n290 laptop. It runs Windows 8.1 and my browser is Google Chrome. If I google a topic and then go into any one of the sites listed after a few moments in the site a couple of pop-ups start to appear as follows: -

1. "The media content is not shown properly ..... update Version M.Player 9.2"

2. "Checking for Windows Errors" which then becomes "PC performance is poor 142 registry errors found - repair now"

I have not responded to either of these pop-ups.

I have Mcafee anti-virus software installed and have used this to scan the computer. No errors were reported.

I've tried using Internet Explorer as the browser. This sends me to the Yahoo browser and when I repeat the above procedure a message appears saying that Mcafee has "stopped a risky connection" and then I cannot go any further.

I simply do not understand what is happening.

Has my computer acquired some malware that has somehow infiltrated the browser.

I've tried using the Control Panel and Task Manager to see if I can spot any programs that look suspicious but nothing seems obviously out of place.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello, Plastic Nev. Thanks for your prompt response.

I started the process, as instructed but the program recommends disabling any other anti-virus or firewall programs that may be installed.

Is this necessary and if so, how do I do that? Sorry if this seems a bit basic.

Hi victim311

There is no harm in asking if you're not sure of something.

Asking is how we all learn.

The reason for this is to stop any conflicts with other security programs.

Thanks for all your help.

I mentioned my problem to a friend of mine in the pub last night.

He said he has encountered the same thing.

He's coming round this evening to try and sort it out.

Thanks again - I may be back if he can't do anything for me!

Plastic Nev and Starbuck,

Just thought I'd let you know - my friend seems to have successfully solved my problem!

He uninstalled two programs that were related to the Yahoo browser and also activated something called 'Adblock' and this seems to have done the trick.

I'd just like to say thanks for your interest and quick response and I'm sorry if I wasted your time.
