Hi,

I have a laptop that is windows XP. I had to reboot it the other day and when it came back on it came up with this message." Unmountable Volume Boot". No matter what I tried I could not get it to go to my desk top. Not even safe mode would do it.

I have got another laptop since so if I can't get that XP to work it's ok, but wanted to get some stuff off of it and put it on my flash drive.

Any help is appreciated

Hi

Unmountable Boot Volume implies that the disk cannot be accessed.

See here - click here - It is quicker than me typing

It is possible to take your hard drive out and connect it to another machine to run some tests.

You would need a 2.5 inch external adapter to suit your drives connections.

It could be IDE or SATA.

Let us know if you need to identify which one you have.

The enclosures are very cheap.

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Hmmm... I don't have the windows XP CD Rom. I would have to get someone else to take out the hard drive as I don't know how.

Oh well. At least I got a new laptop now., so I have windows 8. Takes awhile to get used to it and find everything

In most cases, removing the hard drive from a laptop is quite easy and involves no more than one or two screws to remove a cover underneath, please tell us the make and model and we can probably find the relevant details for you.

It's a dell intel inside celeron inspiron and I don't have a machine to connect the hard drive to. Probably will have to have another person do it for me

Once removed from the XP laptop and put into an enclosure, it can then be connected to your new Windows 8 laptop, as the connection is USB.

However I have just looked at the Dell Inspiron maintenance manual and it is a little more complicated than I hoped as it does require the keyboard to be removed, so maybe best to let a technician do it for you, hopefully he won't charge too much for that.
