Louise Posted March 21, 2014 Author Posted March 21, 2014 Hello Ken I tried most of day yesterday Tried your suggestion and other sites after this -but although they advertise free - when you get to the end you have to pay - usually US dollar I really do not mind paying - if I can be sure they will retrieve the emails I am looking for I also phoned my provider (aol) just to ask if they keep emails. They do but for 5 days So today will phone chap that made windows 7 machine and see if he can help. If not others locally Pity is the emails are on the windows 8 - which I hate with a vengence! Will let you kow how I get on Louise Quote
Plastic Nev Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Hi Louise, if E Mails are still on that Windows 8 machine, unless they have been deleted there, then they will still be on that machine within the Windows 8 machines E Mail folders whichever type of folder it is. If they are there, the safest thing is to open a word doc on the Windows 8 machine and copy and paste the E Mail content into the doc. That doc can then be copied or moved to a USB drive to transfer to your new Windows 7 machine. and saved as a word document. If however they have been fully deleted on either machine, (Not still in the deleted mail folder), sorry but they are likely to be gone for good. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Louise Posted March 21, 2014 Author Posted March 21, 2014 Hello Nev Thank you for that - I will try BUT I think I have been deleted them when I thought machine going straight back! Too hasty! If all else fails will google for Hackers for Hire!!!!!;) Louise Quote
Plastic Nev Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Hi Louise, providing nothing else was stored or written onto the Windows 8 machine after those E Mails were deleted, it may just be possible to recover at least some of them using a downloadable free tool called Recuvva, this will scan the hard drive and find them. http://www.piriform.com/recuva Just click on the green download button for the free version, you shouldn't need the paid for pro version. The only thing to realise that being a new installation in itself, it may just overwrite a small number of deleted files in doing so. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Louise Posted March 21, 2014 Author Posted March 21, 2014 Oh Nev Many thanks Will definately try that this pm Have to crank up the other machine and try Will let you know how I do Thank you again Louise Quote
Louise Posted March 21, 2014 Author Posted March 21, 2014 Dear Nev Started the programme at 4.20pm ..... still scanning! I had chance to look at updates - and it is all in code Will let you know Louise Quote
Plastic Nev Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Hi Louise, although I haven't used any of these recovery programs, I do know they take some time as they scan the entire drive. Once finished they then show you what they have found, bearing in mind, there will not be a name as that is the bit that is totally deleted, the rest of the file for each will have to be looked at to determine if it is the ones you want. Also part of a file may be missing if some other file has been written over the physical space the original was on. Depends really on how much was added since the original deletion. Nev. Louise Posted March 21, 2014 Author Posted March 21, 2014 Hello Nev Oh right As it stopped one lot of scannings - 6 in total at about 7.35 It then started another lot of scanning - and they have estimated it will take 18 hours Will let you know how I do Thank you Louise Quote
Louise Posted March 22, 2014 Author Posted March 22, 2014 Hello Nev Computer been on all night But a bit stuck actually getting hte info out t the mo. I am clicking for england as they say 345 files but I cannot bring them up Last night I could when I clicked updates Will let you know how I do Louise Quote
Plastic Nev Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 Hi Louise, this Windows 8 machine I assume is one you borrowed, is it a used one that someone else had previously? If so, a lot of what it found will be stuff they deleted. Be careful of it unless you know the person, and even then you might find a file you didn't expect. Nev. Plastic Nev Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 OK Louise, at least it is good to know that whatever you find is at least all yours. Having never used Recuvva myself, I can only wish you all the best, and hope someone else sees this who has used it and can offer more advice. Though it does come with a good reputation from those I have seen in the past. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. Starbuck Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 Hi Louise, Just thinking aloud now..... The emails you are trying to recover, what email prefix are they.... Hotmail. Gmail etc? Also how were you checking them? Webmail or email client? .... outlook, outlook express etc. If the emails were Hotmail or Gmail and you checked them through an email client that wasn't synchronised with the webmail server ..... they will still be available from the webmail. In easy terms..... I have Hotmail and Gmail accounts. I check them using Outlook .... i can delete them (once read) from Outlook, but they are still available if i check them at gmail.com or hotmail.co.uk Hope that makes sense. Quote Member of:UNITE
Louise Posted March 22, 2014 Author Posted March 22, 2014 Hello Starbuck OK .... did another deep scan tonight. I only asked for emails to be found. 2 hours later finished having found 4257555 files. Then the little box stayed there. I could move it, save it. Just stayed there. Left it and it went off - goodness knows where. But I am sure something is on my computer somewhere. Will try and find it tomorrow. Click for england - again As to the addresses of emails - I use aol.com. I send out emails on that and receive emails on aol.com. This is all I understand The company I was emailing use their company name then co.uk So ....is aol one of these? Louise Quote
Starbuck Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 Hi Louise I use aol.com. I send out emails on that and receive emails on aol.com. So if you normally connect to AOL to send and receive the emails..... this is webmail. If you delete emails from the webmail page.... they will be gone forever. Quote Member of:UNITE
Ray1000 Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Louise, I hope I’m repeating what Starbuck is saying ... With me being considerably less informed it might be easier to understand. Your AOL emails are on the email section of the AOL website. My Hotmail emails are on the email section of the Microsoft website. Starbuck’s Gmail emails are on the email section of the Google website. BUT ... Starbuck also uses the Microsoft Outlook program which collects the emails from Google and saves them on his hard drive. Later, he can see his emails without even being online. If he deletes an email from his Outlook program it will still be on the Google website. He will only be deleting it from his hard drive. If on the other hand he went onto the Internet, a new Google page opens, he clicks on Google mail, his Gmail inbox comes up and he deletes an email, it goes into the deleted email folder ... and stays there ... if he emptied his deleted email folder it would be gone forever. Unless you use Microsoft Outlook or something similar your emails are never on your hard drive, they are “on the Internet” you are looking at them in the same way you look at the on-line Argos catalogue.
