Paysource Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Hello all, Help or advice please. Daughter`s Toshiba Satelite laptop crashed. The above error notification was shown, I rebooted and played with the F keys for a while. Managed to get it working but then crashed again. Now when I start up I cannot get into windows and get the start up fixing tool which has been running for two days now, even an amatuer like myself realised this was not working so powered off. Any ideas please. Thanks in advance Quote
Plastic Nev Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. That error is usually associated with a hardware fault, this could be a USB device plugged in, if there is something plugged in try it without. If nothing is plugged in, then quite often the fault is the hard drive has failed. From what you have tried, the results you have now got, and considering that it seems that safe mode cannot be obtained now, I do suspect the hard drive. Further checks of the hard drive can be performed, however that will require removing the hard drive from the faulty laptop and also another computer to perform those checks. Also any one of three things will also need to be bought if doing the checks yourself, the three things are either an adapter to connect via USB, the cheapest option, or an enclosure or caddy for USB connection or a docking station. Any one of those will be needed. If willing to go that far yourself, please let us know what model number of Toshiba Satellite it is so we can advise how to remove the hard drive, and possibly find out what type of hard drive, which will be either the earlier IDE type or the later SATA. KenB Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Sorry to butt in Nev ........... You can test your hard drive without taking it out if you prefer to do it this way. Download Seatools for DOS from here - click here Burn this ISO to a CD. Put the CD in the drive and switch on. It should boot from the CD and run a test on the drive. Any "fails" the drive is dead or dying. If it doesn't boot - check that the CDROM Drive is first in the Boot Order in the BIOS. ( we can explain how to do this if necessary ) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Paysource Posted March 31, 2014 Author Posted March 31, 2014 Many thanks for the replies. The thing has gone from bad to worse. It no longer opens up, all I get now when it is switched on is the white lettering on a black background asking to plug in a storage device and hit any key, this then repeats itself. Or I get ``press control alt delete to continue`` I am not too clued up on these things but from what I have seen it looks like the hard drive has gone. If the hard drive has gone, can I still go back to factory settings? I will try the download on a CD to see what happens, but I think I am resigned to the fact a new PC is in order or an expensive repair bill. Thanks again, will keep you posted. Quote
Ray1000 Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 If the hard drive has gone' date=' can I still go back to factory settings?[/quote'] In a word ... No I am resigned to the fact a new PC is in order or an expensive repair bill. If the computer is otherwise OK it's worth renewing the hard drive. It won't be expensive and you'll easily be able to do it yourself. Which model of Toshiba Satelite is it? Which operating system is the license for? What discs do you have? Is there anything on the hard drive your daughter is wanting to recover? Don't get me confused with any of the experts on here, it's just that I renewed a hard drive with their help a couple of months ago. Ray Quote
KenB Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Hi Please answer Ray's questions as all is not lost yet :) 1. Try the ISO image of Seatools that I posted earlier. There is an explanation how to use it on the website - but it is relatively straight forward. 2. If you have recovery disks ( asked by Ray ) then you can still use these on another new hard drive. 3. If you have Win 7 on your system it is possible to download an ISO version of this and install it onto a new hard drive - all legally. 4. it may be possible to gain access to the drive as Ray suggests - let us know if you want to do this. Nev suggested this in post #2 Lots of questions ...... please get back to us with your answers :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Paysource Posted April 2, 2014 Author Posted April 2, 2014 Thanks again, Burned the disc, loaded it in, nothing happened. Do i change the boot order? At present it is as follows 1. HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6475GSX(S1) 2. USB 3. ODD - HL-DT-ST- DVD RAM 4. LAN - Realtek PXE B03 D00 I presume no.3 now needs to be no.1, using the F keys. I am not sure how no.4 came about, as I never did load a Realtek router, presume it is default item. Will keep you updated...and thanks again. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Hi, to boot from a disk it does need to be changed as you say no3 now needs to be no1. Once that is done, give it some time as booting from a disk always takes a bit longer than booting from a hard drive. The no 4 is the normal network adapter, you can ignore this, but to explain, without it you couldn't connect to a network or the internet. However when it is enabled as no 1 in the BIOS it means the computer could actually boot from an operating system actually on the network or internet. Nev. Paysource Posted April 4, 2014 Author Posted April 4, 2014 Hi again, Changed the boot order, put the disc in and got the following message.. PXE61 MEDIA TEST FAILURE, CHECK CABLE RE-BOOT AND SELECT PROPER BOOT DEVICE EXITING PXE ROM Then the following appears.. A DISC READ ERROR OCCURED CTRL ALT DEL TO RESTART. After restart the same thing happens. ??????? Thanks again. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Hi, just on the off chance that it requires the older version, (Being an older machine it just might,) try burning the legacy software as per the note at the bottom of instruction 3, as I quote :- NOTE: If you have any difficulty booting up with this version, please use one of the legacy versions of SeaTools for DOS. If that still fails let us know the full model number of the laptop please, we may need to know that to advise further. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Paysource Posted April 7, 2014 Author Posted April 7, 2014 Hello again, I have tried to run the other version of Seatools, but still no joy. The model number etc are as follows.. Toshiba Satellite C850-175 Serial no. 7C196407R HDD no. Toshiba MK6475GSX(S1) I am resigned to the fact the hard drive will need replacing. I am confident enough to replace it myself, where would be the best place to purchase one? I still have the windows 7 serial number, but none of the original discs that came in the packaging. Many thanks to all for your time and help. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Hi, before we look at full replacement, it would be worthwhile connecting it to another computer where other checks can be run from that other computer. I wouldn't like to say yes it is a duff drive if it turns out that the real fault could be the hard drive controller on the motherboard, or some other motherboard fault. If this hard drive is easily removed from the laptop and is the modern SATA type, (which the HDD model number says it is) providing there is a spare SATA port on another computer it can be connected and checked out quite simply. If there are spares, the ports will be on the motherboard and may require a short SATA cable and Power supply cable if not already present. If no spare ports, then for minimal cost an adapter can be bought to connect the drive to a USB port. If the drive is recognised, and can be accessed while connected to that other computer, it will be a fair bet the drive is OK, and other checks can then be run as well. If however it doesn't show up at all on the other computer, then it may well be a dud. Better going this way first rather than buying and installing a new drive to find the fault is on the motherboard. If at the end of this it does prove to be the hard drive faulty, a new drive can be obtained from many computer parts retailers, though if possible the similar model number may be the best to rule out any UEFI BIOS problems. Once a new drive is fitted, you can download Windows 7 service pack 1 from Digital River and burn it to an ISO disk, or considering this laptop will boot from USB, it can be downloaded to a USB pendrive for installation that way. Once installed the product key from the sticker is all that is needed to activate it. The download is fully legal and from here :- http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/ Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Paysource Posted April 7, 2014 Author Posted April 7, 2014 Thanks Nev, I will try the USB connection, what cable do I need, ie, HDMI to HDMI, USB to USB, or a mixture of both? Just as an afterthought, I had a similar problem with it when it was under warranty, 1 year warranty expired September last year, Toshiba repaired this July last year. I will give them a call and maybe their repairs are under warranty even though the manufacturers warranty has expired. Thanks again Quote
Plastic Nev Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Hi, it is of course worth a phone call, you never know. I once had a much older satellite on XP and got a new motherboard fitted under extended warranty. As for the USB adapter, it is actually much cheaper to buy an enclosure, just fit the hard drive and then connect to another computer. £6-99 from Amazon, here :- http://www.amazon.co.uk/Allcam-IT700-inch-Enclosure-Drive/dp/B000V8I5GW I looked at adapters first, thinking they would be cheaper, they certainly aren't, just for example look here, a massive difference in price. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bipra-SATA-Adapter-Power-Drive/dp/B001A5SK56 Nev. Dokie Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Hello! There has been excellent advise given here on this topic. I'm very impressed with this forum. If I may just add this. If you did not make recovery disks as you were instructed to do if some thing like this happens; you can usually order them from Toshiba. If your HD has died, you might consider ordering the recover disks or recovery USB from Toshiba. You could also down load W7 From Digital River as suggested by Plastic Nev. Some times drivers can be a problem with that solution, but can usually be worked out. PS If I have confused the OP, please discard my my advise and listen to Plastic Nev and others. PS2 Very impressed with forum leaders. Quote
Paysource Posted April 9, 2014 Author Posted April 9, 2014 I agree 100% Dokie, I am very grateful for the help also. As a foot note, I tried the Toshiba website and was basically refered to other sites. I then rang the Toshiba helpline, and was given basic info as my warranty had run out. They suggested I take out one of their extended warranties at £150.00, then send the laptop for repair, they would then charge for the hard drive, £100, to download windows and drivers, £30.00. all presuming it is the hard drive. I shall bite the bullet and buy a new laptop for my daughter. However as my laptop dates back to the stone age, I am going to try a repair my daughters broken myself as a learn as you go project. Will keep all posted once the caddy/enclosure arrives. Once again, many thanks. Quote
KenB Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Those charges seem a bit over the top !! By the time you have paid them you could almost have a new machine. Once you have an enclosure - if you pop the problem drive into it and connect up to another system you will either be able to access the drive or you will not. If you can - treat it like you would a memory stick. Locate any files / data and copy them across to the working system. We can run some tests on the drive from here. Give us a shout when you are ready. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test

On the Toshiba download page (for the drivers you'll be needing) it asks for a "Short Model Number" which doesn't appear in your earlier post ... presumably its somewhere on the laptop. http://www.toshiba.co.uk/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=UK Ray Quote

Paysource Posted April 12, 2014 Author Posted April 12, 2014 Okay, I have put the hard drive into the enclosure, connected to another pc, the hard drive in the enclosure, the hard drive spins, the light is on, but cannot locate it on the pc, tried another pc and no joy. Do I take it that it is now had it? If so, is there anyway of getting any files from it? as my daughter has homework on it, and being a teenager did not think of doing a back up. Thanks again. Quote
KenB Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 Not looking good. Connect the hard drive and enclosure to another computer again. Give it 30 seconds or so .... Start .....type in ....diskmgmt.msc ......ENTER This will take you to Disk Management. The main drive on the other machine will show up as "Disk 0" Underneath that you may see the DVD Drive and hopefully the External Enclosure. It will look a bit like this: Disk 1 and Disk 2 are additional hard drives ..............with luck yours will show here.
