You may have a different type on enclosure to me but I'll just point out a couple of practical items for a first time user ...

Mine has a three way cable ... it plugs into two of the computers' USB sockets, in order to provide enough power presumably, the other one into the enclosure.

Apart from the light coming on, and the sound of the disc running, another thing to watch for is the light flashing indicating it is reading the drive.

Connected properly it only takes 5 or 6 seconds for mine to start flashing, and a few more seconds for it to appear in the box Ken has shown.

On my old machine it took forever to load presumably because of the quality of the USB connection.

All three ends on the cable look the same but one in particular is intended for the enclosure.

As you were...after about an hour the enclosure started reading the disc and shows up on the other laptop. I tried opening the `Users` folder, but it takes forever (blue circle and green bar at top still running).

I can see the users folder, but it is reading as 0 bytes, as if empty. Any ideas please?

And thanks again, really appreciate the help.

PS

I have an old HDD from a Dell laptop, which fits into the Toshiba...note I have not switched on yet. Will this work in the Toshiba. The Dell was Vista, the Toshiba Windows 7.

Thanks again.

Hi not looking good at all for the old Toshiba drive.

However several things to mention,

firstly and still talking about the Toshiba drive, freezing has sometimes worked with drives that won't normally work.

In a warm and dry atmosphere, wrap the drive tightly in a polythene bag to prevent moisture building up inside, then put it in a freezer, leave it there for more than two hours so its temperature is below freezing point, then quickly connect it back up and see if data can be retrieved before it warms up again.

If you leave the drive in the enclosure and wrap the lot up, A good tight wrapping of cling film will do, it will be quicker to connect once frozen, but to make sure it is all fully frozen leave in the freezer for about three hours or more.

One small point, if user data is protected by a password, that may be why it shows as 0 data.

Now to have a look at the ex Del hard drive, as you found yes it will fit and providing the drive is definitely a good one it will work, at least as a hard drive. However very unlikely that the Windows Vista on it will start unless by some fluke Del, and Toshiba used exactly the same motherboard and other components.

It should though show up at least in the Toshiba's BIOS. So long as it does, and the BIOS accepts it, we can go further with it.

Let us know please.

And you could try the Dell HD in the enclosure to check the enclosure, cable and USB are working properly.

Does it have a three way cable out of interest?

And a question for the technical people ... should anything take an hour? ... I'm wondering if there's a loose connection and it was moved at the time it started reading.

Hi Ray, that's why I suggested freezing it, if it took an hour just to register, then the read head drive might be sticky, freezing just might release it to run correctly. Certainly explains why it won't run in the laptop though if it takes an hour.

Good idea to check the Del drive in the enclosure before trying it in the laptop as well Ray, certainly worth the few minutes it would take.

To late to edit my post! That is a great program and it could work if your HD is not totally trashed. Would just like to add. If you are not able to boot with the Linux boot-able CD , there is a very good chance that your HD is toast like others here have suggested.

Good luck. I hope things work out for you. I was following your thread and felt like I might be able to add a possible solution to your issue.

Please read the whole link before trashing it. It has worked for me.

Hi Guys,

Thought I would join in the discussion.

When you plug the Hard Drive into the computer using the External enclose do you hear any Noise? Do you seem to hear any abnormal sound when you try to access the user folder?

Dokie Linux idea is a good point. From person experience I have had more success using Linux or a Mac to retrieve data from a dying Hard Drive and it seems to ignore all the permissions set on the Hard Drive which if you are going into a users area could be causing it not to load. I would try Linux before doing Nev's advice of freezing the Drive.

Good Luck !

Thanks for your support seedy 21. Linux has worked for me and my senior citizens. I enjoy learning and sharing. Once your issue is resolved, I recommend a third party software like Macrium Reflect to create a system image of your OS at least once a month. It will take a little effort to learn, but I guarantee it will be well worth the effort. Macrium Reflect has never let me down. It has saved me many times. I just wish I could get more PC's usurers to use a third party program to back up their OS. It would cause a lot of less grief and it's not that hard to do

PS I came here to learn, help when I think I can, and to share with computer owners.
