Ray1000 Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 While recently repairing a laptop for one of our neighbours and transferring their photographs onto a flash drive to view on the TV, they mentioned a Golden Wedding DVD that wouldn't play all way through due to it being distorted. I've got as far as copying the files from the DVD to my desktop. ... the question is, what's the best way to do it? and I wonder if it's protected having been done professionally? The DVD is made up of Audio_TS and Video_TS The Video_TS folder contains BUP, IFO and VOB files The size 2.75GB Thank you for your time. Ray Quote
Plastic Nev Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Hi Ray, the file types are standard DVD files, however the video itself is contained within the VOB files, these can be played by possibly Windows media player, or most definitely by the VLC player. They can also be converted, (May be some loss of quality in converting) with say AVC video converter to a more usual AVI or WMP file. If requiring to burn a copy to another DVD leave the files as they are and burn using a burning program such as Nero or similar. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Ray1000 Posted March 28, 2014 Author Posted March 28, 2014 Thanks Nev, I wonder which format will be most suitable and the best quality for playing on a TV set using a flash drive. Ray Quote
Plastic Nev Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 I am assuming the TV can take a USB input, it then depends on what the TV can work with, what information does the TV manual give about it Ray? It may be able to handle the full DVD file system, or it may only be able to work with one of the simpler formats. If you let us know the make and model of the TV I might be able to find some info, but no promises, TV info can sometimes be vague at best. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Ray1000 Posted March 29, 2014 Author Posted March 29, 2014 Thanks Nev, I'm testing the memory stick on my Samsung TV and hoping theirs will respond in a like fashion. So far ... Copied the files from the DVD to my desktop. Downloaded a free All in One Media Player and played the VOB files on my computer. Converted one VOB file to WMP and another to AVI using my YouTubeDownloader. Transferred them onto their Memory stick and they don't show up at all on the menu when viewed on my TV Transferred them onto my Memory stick and the AVI plays on my TV and the WMP says the TV doesn't support that type of file. You would have though all memory sticks would act the same. I'm continuing the process on a trial and error basis. Ray Quote
Plastic Nev Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Are both memory sticks formatted to the same format, i.e. NTFS, or FAT? if one is different to the other might be why one isn't recognised by the TV. Have you tried the complete DVD files straight onto the memory stick? My guess is that should work on the TV, though willing to be proved wrong, I am learning something new along with you Ray. Nev. Ray1000 Posted March 29, 2014 Author Posted March 29, 2014 (edited) http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj161/JRD81/Flashdrive.jpg RED - Theirs - 8GB - Brand New - Pre loaded with 11MB of "My Vault" and 9MB of ScanDisk Secure Access Folder - Fat32 - 1500 photos visible- 1 x AVI invisible - 1 x WMP invisible. BLACK - Mine - 2GB - Fat32 - 1 x AVI visible and plays - 1 x WMP visible and says TV doesn't support this type of file. I had a word with someone at Tesco where I bought the Red one and he said he had removed the two preloaded folders from his. I think I might do the same ... I'm hoping to avoid formatting it due the the photos I loaded on last week. The aim is to end up with all their photos and their Golden Wedding on the Red one playing on their TV. An alternative idea would be to copy the original distorted DVD to a new one and assume there's a DVD recorder under their television that would play the new DVD. I think you pointed me in the direction of a free copy disc program some time ago ... I'll have a look back and download it again . Edit, Found it - InfraRecorder Ray Edited March 29, 2014 by Ray1000 Quote
Plastic Nev Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Hi Ray, firstly, I would temporarily copy off the red drive back onto your computer the photo's you put on it, then do a full reformat of it as the Tesco guy suggested as he may be right it is the other junk on it may be causing the problem. As for Infra Recorder, to burn a DVD with it the files must be in DVD format, which fortunately they are, so it should do a straight copy for you. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Ray1000 Posted March 30, 2014 Author Posted March 30, 2014 Thank you Nev, I'll give that a try. Ray Quote
Ray1000 Posted March 31, 2014 Author Posted March 31, 2014 Well, all of a sudden it's done.:) Transferred the photos to my computer as you suggested Nev, and formatted the Red memory stick. Converted the three VOB files to XVid MPEG-4 Codec (AVI) using YouTubeDownloader. Transferred the three AVI files to the memory stick. Replaced the photos onto the memory stick. The photos and video ... complete with sound ... play normally on the TV. I didn’t need the InfraRecorder ... The action of inserting a new disc in the DVD/ RW on Vista brings up the Windows DVD Maker. Following the on screen instructions it was a matter of choosing the VOB files from the desktop and burning a new DVD. Thank you for your help, Ray Quote

cockpheasant Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Hello again Nev. I am trying to rip a DVD to a USB drive for my portable caravan TV. The TV will play AVI or Mpeg. Is there a free reliable convertedr that I can download please. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 If you already have YouTube Downloader installed, it will possibly do the job. However, if it tells you there is a new version available, be very careful during the installation of the new version as they include a bit of junk now including the YouTube downloader tool bar. Be sure to check for and remove ticks on the unwanted stuff. I now use AVC, which when downloaded only includes Real Player in the install which is easy to spot and untick. However AVC may have a greater range of video types it can convert and certainly a big range of what to convert too than the YT downloader. It will also download and convert from YouTube and many other video sites as well. If you wish to try AVC, (Any Video Converter) here is the link for the free download, ignore the banner at the top for the Ultimate as that is their paid for version. http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/ Nev.
