Gotalife Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 My Ei-System Pentium ® 4 CPU 3.20GHz 960 MB of RAM, Windows XP Service pack 3 has become slow and kept getting messages regarding McAfee, I contacted BT NetProtect who supplies McAfee, they did a GTA “go to assist” and uninstalled Mc and then re installed which did not solve the problem, they then said that I did not have enough memory (showing 360mb available) and that I needed to increase the memory, my system has 2 x 512MB of RAM which I have now changed to 2 x 2GB DDR2. I have now re installed McAfee but in doing so when it checked my system it showed “ATT Yahoo! Online Protection 1.0 Security Centre” needed to be removed, but I can not find it anywhere. Any advice on this would be much appreciated, I’m not tech minded, so in simple terms please. Quote
Ray1000 Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 ... but I can not find it anywhere. You will have already looked in Control Panel > Add & Remove programs? and ... Start > Search > Files and Folders ... type in "Online Protection Security Centre" > Enter? Ray Quote
Gotalife Posted April 2, 2014 Author Posted April 2, 2014 Thanks Ray, did as you stated, showed “No results to display” same again when I type “ATT Yahoo! Online Protection 1.0 Security Centre”. When I posted this forum, I put the computer in sleep mode, but when I went to start it, it would not start, I had to re boot the computer, never did that before?. Quote
ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted April 2, 2014 ExTS Admin Posted April 2, 2014 Do you have an entry: at&t applications in your uninstall list? It may be incorporated in to that. Or it may have actually been removed ..... but the entry is still in the WMI. (Windows Management Instrumentation) We see this sometimes when one of the tools we use says that an old security program is still installed when in fact it isn't. which did not solve the problem, they then said that I did not have enough memory I'm not surprised. McAfee is simillar to Norton..... both are known resource hogs. There are much better programs out there. Quote Member of:UNITE
Gotalife Posted April 3, 2014 Author Posted April 3, 2014 Thanks Starbuck, I think you are right about “Or it may have actually been removed ..... but the entry is still in the WMI. (Windows Management Instrumentation) We see this sometimes when one of the tools we use says that an old security program is still installed when in fact it isn't.” can not find anything relating to it. I use to have Norton before BT NetProtect Plus with McAfee, which I have been using for years, it just the pass few months that I’ve been getting messages like “Your computer is at risk, Real-Time scanning: Off, Your Firewall is off”. You say there are better programs, any you recommend that have free support like BT NetProtect. Quote
Gotalife Posted April 3, 2014 Author Posted April 3, 2014 Still having to reboot after putting computer in sleep mode, the computer wakes up but nothing shows on screen and the memeo auto back up does not light up, so have to switch off and re boot. This has every time I put in sleep mode, never done this before I re installed McAfee yesterday. Quote
RandyL Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Your computer is at risk, Real-Time scanning: Off, Your Firewall is off Windows Security Center does not always recognize some antivirus programs or third party firewalls. This sometimes happens with Mcafee products and you have to disable the notification for it in the Security Center. Only do that if you are sure that Mcafee AV and firewall are indeed running. ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted April 3, 2014 ExTS Admin Posted April 3, 2014 Still having to reboot after putting computer in sleep mode To be honest, sleep mode is not something that i would ever use. Do a Google search for: problems using sleep mode see how many pages of problems it will find. I think you are right about “Or it may have actually been removed ..... but the entry is still in the WMI. (Windows Management Instrumentation) We see this sometimes when one of the tools we use says that an old security program is still installed when in fact it isn't.” can not find anything relating to it. A Google search for: old security programs still showing in WMI will show you just how common a problem this is. Quote Member of:UNITE
Gotalife Posted April 4, 2014 Author Posted April 4, 2014 Regarding the sleep mode.. after putting the computer in sleep mode and then pressing the sleep button the computer comes back to life but the screen and my memeo backup do not light up. I use the sleep mode as I usually start the computer first thing in the morning but use it on and off through out the day and evening, so there can be periods of hours when not in use, is there a better way of doing this without using the sleep mode?. Ray1000 Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 My computer is used in a similar fashion throughout the day but I shut it down every time I've finished using it. You may have originally latched onto the idea of sleep mode because it was set to sleep in Control Panel > Power Options. I use Avast Antivirus. The only involvement I've had with Norton and McAfee is removing it. Ray Quote
Gotalife Posted April 4, 2014 Author Posted April 4, 2014 Funny enough, whilst BT were looking into the McAfee issue, they set up Avast, which worked much quicker, BT said it was because it was a free one and to have the full package would be just as slow. Not being tech minded I go by what they said, until one of you prove they were bull sh***** me. Quote
Ray1000 Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 (edited) So ... have you got Avast on now, and in use? ... if so you'll need to remove all the extraneous bits of McAfee from the machine, I'm sure someone on here will have the quickest method at their fingertips. Have you identified how you can have "Shut Down" as the default option rather than "Sleep"? Have you checked to make sure all of your newly installed RAM is showing in Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties Ray Edited April 4, 2014 by Ray1000 Quote
Gotalife Posted April 4, 2014 Author Posted April 4, 2014 No…. I did have whilst BT check McAfee ( BT added the Avast ) and I added the extra RAM, then BT through GTA removed the Avast and re-installed the McAfee (that was when the “ATT Yahoo ) showed up. Quote
