Hello again,

I am having a problem downloading the latest Windows 8.1 update, which is nearly 888MG. I am getting approx. 16% of the download and then it is failing. the error code is 80073712.

I have tried running the help function with this error, but this has not made any difference, in fact, in typical Microsoft fashion, the command it is instructing me to select simply doesn't appear on my system

Can anyone help with this? An update this size must surely be important.

Thanks in anticipation,

vavaseur

Also when I got Windows 8.1 I had to update my drivers before the Microsoft updates would install properly.

Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.

There is an Update Troubleshooter here .... click here

This will download automatically.

Select Run when it is done ( only takes seconds to download )

Thanks for the Update Troubleshooter Ken. I learned some thing today.

I have finally got this update after a frustrating and irritating several days. After trying everything suggested on Microsoft's help pages, and judging by the number of comments there were many others having similar problems, I eventually did a system recover.

This put the PC back to its original state with the Windows 8 operating system. Before I could upgrade to Windows 8.1 I had to download about 360MB of Windows 8 updates, and I also had to reinstall all the programmes that I had installed since I bought the PC.

Finally I was able to download the Windows 8.1 upgrade which obviously already had most of the updates that I had been trying, unsuccessfully, to download!!! There was still about 36MB of updates to download but this was successful.

Maybe I should have bought a Mac!

Thanks for your help,

DSTM

Was just wondering if you installed the drivers like DSTM suggested before doing all that??

Thanks for your reply. I'm sure it will help others with that problem.

No I didn't intentionally or knowingly install any drivers. I presume that this was all taken care of in the download. However, everything seems to be working OK - touch wood!

I eventually did a system recover.

This put the PC back to its original state with the Windows 8 operating system.

The update going OK after this step seems to suggest something going amiss with the system in between when you bought the computer and the time the latest update was tried. Since upgrade/updates did install OK after the system recovery, it shows that these Microsoft updates don't give a problem on an 'out of the box' Windows 8. I suppose that's all that Microsoft can ensure. Hard to cater for all the variables that can occur to people's computers as they get used and programs are installed etc.

I wonder if the update failing might have been because of a condition existing that was beyond Microsoft's control? A 3rd party AV program or firewall getting in the way maybe? Some other factor?

Different with a Mac because they keep a tighter control on what can and can't be done. So yes, I think Mac users would not get this type of problem. Then again, I think it's quite nice to have the freedom of software choice that comes with a Microsoft operating system ..maybe this can lead to problems of its own though.

Now that you have your working upgraded/updated OS, perhaps make a disk image of it. Then, if this type of problem happens again, you wouldn't have to go all the way back to the 'out of the box' date. You will have a recovery point with all of the current updates in it. Make the image before installing anything else if possible.
