My local repairer has been unable to fix the prob, he say's oh bring it back and we will have another look, they gave me a memory stick to put in but still does not work, am really desperate now. it's a xp family.

Can you also tell us what kind of mouse you have?

Is it optical?

Is it wireless?

What model?

I did have a wireless mouse, but the green light that shows the mouse is sending the signal wasn't lighting up so I purchased a cheap wired mouse, when it still didn't work I took the new mouse back to the shop and when they tried it, it worked, and that is the one I am trying to use now. When I had the PC uprated a month or two ago, every time I booted up I get this message flagging up (new hardware detected) but most of the time I would cancel it then carry on as normal, but when it happened this week I went thro the menu of installing it using the keys then, lo and behold the darned cursor worked, but when I pulled the power cord by accident I replaced the cord and booted up but to no avail and the message that used to appear no longer does, I hope some of this makes sense. I should have taken more notice of my IT tutor then maybe I could have sorted this myself.

You said you pulled the power cord by accident and replaced it. I assume you mean the main power supply cord to your computer. Am I correct?

 

If your mouse is a PS2 wired mouse then XP should recognize it and install it. Can you borrow another PS2 mouse and try it? If that works then it's just a faulty mouse. Considering how cheap they are your best solution is to just replace it.

 

On the other hand if a borrowed PS2 mouse doesn't work and this happened after damage to your main power supply cord then I can only assume that caused issues such as an improper shutdown etc.

 

If that is the situation I would first try tapping the F8 key at bootup to get into options. Then using the arrow keys choose “Last Known Good Configuration”. If that doesn't work do the same thing except choose to boot into safe mode. See if the mouse works there.
