Hi,

iI have been using a 1tb HD attached to TV via a Western Digital Media Player, to play downloaded films/tv series etc. , but recently when I move the drive and attach to PC to add further files, I get a message to say that errors have been detected on the drive, please scan and repair. This happened a few times. and the HD worked fine.

Recently, I get the same message when I connect the HD and PC, but the Scan/Repair cycle will not complete. I get a message saying that " Error Checking : There was a problem repairing this drive "

Is there anyway I can get this to run, or somehow fix the drive ?

Does the disk still work despite that message? If you want to check the disk, how about initialising a scan by right-clicking on the drive in 'This PC' and seeing if a scan completes. Might be best to back up any wanted data on the disk to start with if you have a large enough space to store it somewhere else ...just in case anything is amiss.

I have had some experience with that message. I recently recorded my entire CD music collection to a USB thumb drive. This now sits permanently in a USB port on the back of the TV, which subsequently can be played via a home cinema system. The USB drive switches on an off with the TV. If I remove it from the TV and plug it into the PC in order to add music to it, I often get the message you are getting, perhaps because Windows knows it hasn't gone through its own 'safely remove' procedure (I think). I've sometimes let it scan and sometimes ignored the message. Whatever, the files are all OK and the music still plays on the computer and on the TV's media player.

Wait for further comment but if the disk still works as it should, I'd tentatively say there is nothing to worry about.

Further to the good advice already given I would backup all your Films/music onto another Drive as a safe guard.

Hard Drives can fail at any moment and sometimes give you no warning.

Thanks for that info Wellies.

The files that are on are a mixture of mp4, avi, mkv etc, . I have added files to the HD since the "problem" occured , and some I can view, others I get a message saying that there is "No media in this file" . If I connect with the PC, I can view everything with no problem. I have tried to do a scan from "MyPC" and right click the drive, however as I said in the first post, the scan will not complete , I'm sure if it would complete, the problem would be fixed.

I get the feeling now that it has been caused by failing to "Safely Remove Hardware" ............I have just been pulling the jack out of the media drive, instead of shutting it down.

I feel there should be a way to get the scan to work and repair the minor probs. , but I don't know how ?

Does the Western Digital Media Player have a file number limit? The media player in my TV doesn't (or I haven't reached it yet) but if I put the USB drive in my Bluray Player, I'm informed that not all files/folders will show because I've exceeded the limit that the media player can handle. Sure enough, some of the folders full of music will come up as 'empty'. All can be seen by the TV and computer though. Just thought that worth a mention.

Wellies,

not sure about the file limit with WD player, however, the HD that I am using only has about 40GBs of files on.

Although my knowledge is very limited compaqred with probably most contributors to these fora , I have a feeling that the problem has been caused by me just pulling the USB lead to disconnect the HD. If I could only get Windows to do the "Check/Repair" , I think I would be OK. What about a full re-format, do you think that would help ?

Something has to be tried to overcome the error and in the same situation with all files backed up, I think I would try a quick format in FAT32.

Thanks guys:

Dokie.........I think that download is to test a WD hard drive. In fact the HD I am using is a Seagate. The problem is with the CHKDSK command in Windows. If I could get that to run on the HD, then I believe it would solve the problem However .................Wellies, I will try a reformat.

I think its NTFS at the moment, but I don't know what difference that makes ?

I have formatted hundreds of Hard Drives, always to NTFS.

Flash Drives only I format to FAT32.

Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.

FAT32 is an older and poorer filing system while the NTFS is newer and better and more compatible with any Windows OS after Win98.

Any user on the computer can delete or modify sensitive Files in Fat32 format whereas NTFS files are protected.

Here is an explanation.

All fine. I suggested FAT32 because just about everything works with that. My home cinema system (not that old), doesn't work with NTFS but I expect later equipment will.

Yes It is to test the HD ; but As I said in previous post, it also can repair your drive. I also have a seagate external drive.

Hope you can read the fine print!!

Full diagnostic/repair scan completed, 6 hours, with no errors found or repaired. chkdsk would not complete although it found errors. I reformatted the HD and ran chkdsk again...................no errors found great !!!!

Added a couple of files to HD , connected to TV via media player. Message that no media files on disc ( I could view them OK on PC screen ) . after disconnection , tried chkdsk and the unrepairable errors were back !!!

Completely stumped now.

Hello! Not sure where to go next. The drive may be getting ready to bite the dust. Which seagate test did you use? Some times the seagate dos is better. It is a ISO file and will need to be burned to a CD. Here is a tutorial how to use and burn seagate dos. If you have questions,I will try to help!

Dokie,

The prog was "Sea Tools for Windows Version 1.20.10 " .

Following all of this, I reformatted the HD, again, fired up the media player and connected the HD. It eventually registered the files and I was able to access them. Disconnected using the approved "eject" procedure, and I was able to run chkdsk with no faults found. Tried the same set up 3 times, and so far, everything is fine.

I can only assume that the problems were caused by failing to disconnect the HD correctly.

Thank you again for pointing me in the right direction ...................but keep checking cos I'm sure I'll be back. Ha Ha !!!

Hello! Your very welcome. I hope it stays. You should always use the safe to remove hardware feature. I also agree with you that could have caused your issue.

Good luck!
