Hum, I think we are back to some driver somewhere causing this problem, as well as the possibility of a faulty hard drive as suggested by DSTM.

 

It now depends on whether the owner has some full system recovery disks, or it is one of those that works from the recovery partition.

 

If replacing the hard drive then obviously the partition type of recovery isn't much use so that would mean a new copy of Windows 7 and then using the original product key, which as suggested earlier, Speccy can find that for you.

 

Whichever method, a new hard drive and full install of the operating system plus the required drivers, may be the way to go now as any other things tried may just be a waste of time any way.

Many thanks for that - but how do I know if my install is an OEM or other type? All I know it is W7 Ultimate 32bit and thanks to you people I now have the license code as well.

 

I know the owner does not have the install disks any more and there is a recovery partition on the HDD but I suspect that it will have the original Vista OS on it and not W7 so will probably not be much use anyway. Not really sure why he needed to upgrade from Vista to W7 as the PC it quite lightly used and not in need of a very robust OS!. However if I do a rebuild it will be with W7

If it was an upgrade from Vista to Win 7 it is unlikely to be OEM ( original equipment manufacturer )

However, if you are using a new hard drive it would be worth a try first.

 

Start > Right click "Computer" > Properties.

It should mention "OEM" here if it is.

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Hello! Lots of great advise to what seems to be a very difficult problem. I also am leaning toward a fresh install of your OS but might give this a look.I have used this tool before(clean boot).It can be time consuming, but might be worth a try to see if your having apps conflicts. After reading your first post and seeing that the issue doesn't seem to happen in safe mode, this is kind a like a extension of safe mode with more options. Is recommended by micro$$oft.
