Slumdog Posted May 6, 2014 Author Posted May 6, 2014 Thank you for all your help again. The last thing i will ask is regarding how this all came about in the first place, when I was trying, unsuccessfully, to update my Nokia Suite. The Nokiasuite has now been deleted, thanks to someone who told me to do so on the Nokia problem forum and i cannot reinstall. When I try to reinstall, I get this error message..... 'The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory C:\Programdata\Microsoft\Windows\Startmenu\Programs\NokiaPCsuite. The installation cannot continue. Log on as administrator or contact your system administrator.' Followed by........ 'Installation operation failed. Fatal error during installation.' Any ideas? Quote
ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted May 6, 2014 ExTS Admin Posted May 6, 2014 The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory C:\Programdata\Microsoft\Windows\Startmenu\Programs\NokiaPCsuite. That's strange as all of the orphan files pointing to Nokia were removed with the last FRST fix. There is one thing we can try though. Let's try and reset the permissions for this directory. Please download ResetPerms to your desktop. Click the downloaded icon to run the program. Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator. Copy and paste the following into the edit box and press the Restore Permissions button: C:\Programdata\Microsoft\Windows\Startmenu\Programs\NokiaPCsuite When finished click OK. Then press List Permissions and post the Perms.txt in your next reply. Quote Member of:UNITE
ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted May 6, 2014 ExTS Admin Posted May 6, 2014 ResetPerms link is broken. Sorry about that. Seems that Farbar has renamed the tool and changed the link. Here you go: Please download GrantPerms and save it to your desktop. Unzip the file and depending on the system run GrantPerms.exe or GrantPerms64.exe Copy and paste the following in the edit box: C:\Programdata\Microsoft\Windows\Startmenu\Programs\NokiaPCsuite Click Unlock. When it is done click "OK". Click List Permissions and post the result (Perms.txt) that pops up. A copy of Perms.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run. Note: The download page will offer 2 versions.... you need the 32bit version. More work for me now... change the canned speeches again! Quote Member of:UNITE

ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted May 6, 2014 ExTS Admin Posted May 6, 2014 looks like there was a space in the wrong place on last report, tried again and still got this.. Yes, it's the board software.... sometimes it does mess up the info. There shouldn't be any spaces in the text that you type. I did remove a space before i posted the instructions, but the spaces keep coming back. You could try again and look at the text you add to the GrantPerms edit box. Make sure there's no spaces in the text. After information from RandyL, it seems a lot of people have had problems with this software.... especially trying to uninstall it. Nokia really should stick to phones. Anyway, it seems there's an uninstaller for this: Nokia PC Suite Cleaner You might want to give that a try.... and then try a reinstall. Quote Member of:UNITE
Slumdog Posted May 6, 2014 Author Posted May 6, 2014 AVG is now constantly stopping infected threats from there and is still doing so now and it keeps adding one after the other. Panicking a bit now, hope you are online!!!! Not a good site to download from!!! Quote
ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted May 6, 2014 ExTS Admin Posted May 6, 2014 I'm not getting any threats showing when i access that page!! Quote Member of:UNITE
ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted May 6, 2014 ExTS Admin Posted May 6, 2014 This should be a more direct download: http://www.softpedia.com/dyn-postdownload.php?p=152143&t=5&i=1 Quote Member of:UNITE
Slumdog Posted May 6, 2014 Author Posted May 6, 2014 Had to run AVG in safe mode to stop the threats. ( I have the report if you want it? ) It was a Malsign Generic 834, if that makes any sense!! Quote
Slumdog Posted May 6, 2014 Author Posted May 6, 2014 I thought the threat had gone but AVG keeps popping up every couple of minutes to tell me another has been detected. I remove the threat and another one pops up immediately. I have also removed Nokia and tried to install but still got the same error albeit after 90% not 50%. I am now at a total loss as to how to get rid of the threats and if I should even bother anymore with Nokia suite. .............and it was all going so well! Quote
ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted May 6, 2014 ExTS Admin Posted May 6, 2014 Bsically a Malsign Generic 834, is a PUP connected to Conduit toolbar. It's just annoying, it's not malicious. I can't see why this would have been effecting AVG, by just following the link. and it's very easy to remove... no idea why AVG made a big thing about it. I think i know what happened: Is this the page you saw? (this is what i see using IE) The 2 start download buttons are for rubbish programs that softpedia try to force on you. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/nokpage_zps336a2380.png This is what i see using Pale Moon ( same with Firefox) The 2 big download buttons don't show. The rubbish ads are filtered out by AdBlock Plus. (an add on that prevents a lot of ads showing) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/nokpage1_zps8358c488.png If you clicked on one of the big download buttons it would have set AVG off. The more direct download i gave afterwards will bypass those other download buttons. If AVG is struggling with the PUP's, just run MBAM .... that'll clear them easily, so will AdwCleaner Also remember to uninstall or remove anything that you downloaded. Quote Member of:UNITE
Slumdog Posted May 6, 2014 Author Posted May 6, 2014 Yep, they are the pages I saw, obviously I was too hasty and clicked without looking. Ok, got rid of the threats popping up on AVG with MBAM. Totally un-installed Nokia and tried to re-install but still got same error message albeit after 90% not 50%. Quote
RandyL Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Hi Slumdog. Starbuck may be away for a while so I'll answer for now. Have you ever used a registry cleaner? That error can be caused by a corrupt Windows installation. You could try the Microsoft Fixit for programs that cannot be installed or uninstalled. Click on Run now. Also since the Nokia cleanup utility did have partial success try some additional steps. 1. Remove PC Suite from Programs and Features. 2. Use Ctrl/Alt/Delete to open Task Manager. Click on the Processes tab and stop the following if present. DATALA~1.EXE( or DataLayer.exe); SERVIC~1.EXE (or ServiceLayer.exe) MPAPI3S.EXE PCSYNC2.EXE 3. Open Windows Explorer and delete the following folders if present: C:\program files\common files\nokia C:\program files\nokia\nokia pc suite C:\program files (x86)\common files\nokia C:\program files (x86)\nokia\nokia pc suite 4. Next run the Nokia cleanup utility. 5. Go to Internet Options in Control Panel and delete temporary internet files. 6. Reboot your PC to ensure the cleanup is complete. Slumdog Posted May 7, 2014 Author Posted May 7, 2014 Hi RandyL, all above done. None of the four were present in Task manager processes. Nokia suite will still not install. Still getting original lack of privileges error. Quote
RandyL Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Have you ever used a registry cleaner? These can cause corruption of important Windows components. Perhaps a more agressive approach. Create a restore point and backup. Do not empty the recycle bin. MANUALLY CREATE A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT 1. Backup important Nokia data files. 2. Remove PC Suite and all related Nokia programs from Programs and Features. 3. Run the Nokia cleanup utility again. 4. Go back to Control Panel and manually delete any Nokia folders from C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files (x86). 5. Reboot your PC to ensure the cleanup is complete. 6. Download and SAVE the latest version of Nokia PC Suite 7.1 7. Temporarily disable your antivirus. AVG and Malwarebytes. 8. Make sure your device is on and set as discoverable. 9. Right click the PC Suite exe file and select Run as Administrator. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. Slumdog Posted May 8, 2014 Author Posted May 8, 2014 Randy, thanks for the help but......... 1. You have already asked me if i have used a registry cleaner when you took over from Starbuck. (I have done that). 2. Thare are no nokia files to back up EVERY nokia thing has been deleted. 3. I CANNOT download nokia suite. I get the same 'lack of privileges' error EVERY time. If you dont mind, I'll wait until Starbuck is back as he is up to date with the on-going problems, Thanks anyway. G. Quote

ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted May 8, 2014 ExTS Admin Posted May 8, 2014 Hi Slumdog, I was going to suggest that you ask over at the Nokia Support Forums, but i see you already have. There seems to be a lot of problems with this software and Nokia should really be the ones that can advise you. Software specific problems are very difficult for us to try and sort out. We remove the folder and Nokia say it's still there!..... This isn't a malware issue now ... it's a Nokia software issue. I'll move the thread back to the original position so that anyone else may off advice. Quote Member of:UNITE
Slumdog Posted May 8, 2014 Author Posted May 8, 2014 Ok. Thanks again for all the help with the other issues. Your instructions make the process very easy. Cheers. Quote
ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted May 8, 2014 ExTS Admin Posted May 8, 2014 You're welcome. I also renamed the thread so that the new problem may get more attention. Quote Member of:UNITE
