Plastic Nev Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Hi all, for once it is me asking for a little information and if anyone else has any experience of this. My ISP got in touch to tell me they are now running a new service, being an independent service provider they have no access to the cable network and therefore provide broadband via the BT telephone lines. In view of the fact that the BT line is always going to be slow they have installed a wi fi system in the area and I can sign up for a connection speed much higher than it is at present. All it will involve is a technician will install an antenna to pick up the wi fi signal and I assume a router for a one off charge of around £20 to £30. Just wondered if anyone else is on a similar connection, and what their views on it are. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. KenB Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Sorry Nev - not come across this one before. Wireless can be prone to interference ......just a thought. What speeds do you get at the moment ? What do they suggest that you will be getting ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! DSTM Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 I know nothing as well, Nev. I have read of poor signal on cloudy days. As long as no one can tap into your signal is the main concern I would have. I don't like wireless anything. If they can guarantee you 100% security and faster speeds then it would be a good thing. Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
Plastic Nev Posted May 15, 2014 Author Posted May 15, 2014 I first learned about this from a telephone call from the ISP which due to being busy I had to cut it short. However the company does run a shop in the town and I am hoping to get in and discuss the whole thing at much greater length. At present I have a pretty basic standard over the telephone line service which at its best is around 7 to 8MB/s, at its worst, slower than dial up. They are promising speeds up to 30MB/s via the wireless connection. From information found elsewhere, the service is a little like a giant hotspot similar to the smaller coverage you can find in internet cafe's or similar. I assume they must have antenna on the mobile phone masts dotted about round the town. Anyway, once I can have a talk with these people and learn more about it, it is looking like I might be the guinea pig to try this out perhaps. Quote Need help with your computer problems? KenB Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 What about suggesting to them that you would be prepared to assess and recommend it as a long-term moderator on 2 ( or more ) websites. ( for the cost of a free installation ) Give this site as a reference point for prospective clients to contact you. We all win :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
Plastic Nev Posted May 15, 2014 Author Posted May 15, 2014 OK, I only spoke to a salesman type, who did know basic technology which is better than some, however, the signal is not satellite and is ground based using mobile telephone type masts for distribution. Encryption to a hundred and something bit which is supposedly the same security used by the banks for their wireless high speed systems for data between banks, which apparently has been in use for some time. My ISP, which is Supanet are offering various deals which are available for slower speeds of around 12MB/s up to at least 30MB/s or higher, pricing being around a two year contract at just over £12 a month for the first year, then goes to around £21 a month, that is for the 30MB/s. Most of it is based around either the HS4 or 6G services according to the leaflets I have been given. Not much more info available on here :- http://www.thebroadbandshop.co.uk/ Looking at the deal for HS4 as a direct thing, it looks like My ISP, "Supanet" are working with them to be offering the 30MB/s , however I now see there is a 500 GB cap on downloads, that is something I forgot to ask about while in the shop. However, considering my hard drive is also 500GB, I doubt I would ever download that much over a month. Nice idea Ken, though I doubt I would get that sort of deal from them, however I will ask and see if I can twist an arm or two. :D Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems?
