Hi

I have my home set up with internet entering through attic office to a wired router and then passed down to ground floor by cat 5 cable to a wireless router for rest of house and have had no problems. I have just switched providers to UPC and now my wireless router isn't picking up a signal .When I switched routers over I didn't have to do any set up, it just plugged and played .

Do I need to change something on the ground floor wireless router .any help would be grateful

thanks

Colin

Hi Colin

I can't see a change in ISP causing your problem.

Have you tried switching both routers off - leave for 30 seconds - then on again ?

Does the connection in the attic work ok ?

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Hi ken, thanks for coming back.

Yes everything works fine in the office. All i had to do was plug out line to pc from old router upstairs and into new router and worked first time, after the usual 5/10 min time to register the signal.

I then unpluged the lead for downstairs router from old upstairs router and plugged that in to new UPC box thinking that that too would just work but nothing.i have tried turning on and off, one and both routers, leaving it for a time and trying again, even pressing the reset button on the downstairs router last night as a last resort but again no signal.

Thanks

Thanks DSTM, i think they are only for the tv digitel box. Anyhow my UPC box is connecting fine but just wont either send signal to second router or second router isnt seeing new UPC router.

Thanks anyway

Hi Colin,

While you have referred to the routers as ... upstairs being "wired" ... and downstairs being "wireless" ... presumably the two routers are similar to each other - both modern wireless routers - you are just using one of them downstairs to increase the wireless coverage throughout the property?

I have two routers connected and the second one required the settings changing.

The settings for the second router are readily available on the Internet.

Because the procedure initially requires the second router to be connected on its own ... would it be worth fitting the downstairs one upstairs and see if it works before you go any further.

I'm thinking the default settings on your previous two routers just happened to be suitable for extending the wireless range ... the settings don't have to be the same on each router, in fact they need to be different for it to work.

Hi ray, yes i use second one to extend signal due to an oversight when i build office during renovations the builders used foiled back underlay and no signal will come down from office.

Upstairs is not a wireless router and unfortunately the downstairs router cannot be connected directly to test as upc signal comes through a coaxial and only fits the upc router.

What settings do i need to look at would you think?

Do i need to access the downstairs router through the pc using comand line or what?

Again any help is appreciated

Thanks

Hi, just so we all understand now, your internet connection enters the house upstairs in an attic office, and into a router provided by UPC your internet provider. You then have a cable connecting to the original router downstairs.

At this stage it might help if you can tell us the make and model number of both routers so we can look up the details.

As Ray said, in this instance, one or both routers may require settings changed, so we will need that information to explain how.

Colin,

While waiting for a better answer ... disconnect the downstairs router from the upstairs system and connect it to laptop using wired connections ... type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar at the top of the screen. The username and password are admin and admin (probably) Just see if you can access the set up page.

Hi colincork

Please do these after you have tried Ray1000 suggestion and still having problems

Do you have a Computer that we can run tests from both routers?

I would suggest getting the Network Details from both Networks so we can double check that they are on the same IP Range and also that the Subnet Mask and Default Gateway is set up correctly.

Please go to your Upstairs Network Run this command, post the results and then do the same when your connected to your downstairs Network.

We need to run a Command with Command Prompt

Click on Start, click on Run and type in "cmd.exe" and click Run.

Type in the following line followed by clicking Enter

ipconfig /all > cmd.txt && Notepad cmd.txt

If they was no errors please exit Command Prompt.

This will have created a Textfile called cmd. Please copy and paste the contents into your next reply.

Hi Seedy,

I'm having problems resetting my second router since the primary one failed and was renewed (for a different make) last Friday.

I'll start a new thread if you'd be kind enough to have a look.

Thanks

Ray
