jimmyedwards Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 Hi to all, I am having another one of those what did I do days. I was trying to copy and paste a song to a folder to the dropdown folders on the left side of the screen. Just as I went to click paste the screen jumped and I hit copy by mistake. Now the Shared folder properties show Size 637 GB Size on disk 637 GB 5,134 files 315 folders The My computer properties shows Size 355 bytes Size on disk 4.00 KB When I put the pointer on the desktop icon for Shared folder it shows 45 GB but if I open the folder it shows 637GB When I open the Shared folder or My computer there is a option to undo copy CTRL+Z Does anyone know if that is safe or will I wipe the hard drive clean? Ray1000 Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 Hi Jimmy, Someone will be here shortly to sort you out, in the meantime I've just tried doing the same thing on Vista and nothing happened. Ray Edit ... After posting and closing Chrome down I opened a Word page and clicked Paste .... I says Word cannot copy data from F:/link Quote
Plastic Nev Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 I don't understand exactly what has happened here, hitting "Copy" instead of "Paste", should only have put copies of files in the clipboard, not shifted files around, and in fact if nothing was highlighted or selected, it shouldn't have copied anything. However, I would look at trying a system restore back to before you did this, hopefully things will return to where they were. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Thanks for your reply, I didn’t do anything other than tried to copy and paste and the screen jumped just as I was about to hit paste and I hit copy instead . I wonder if the properties were like that already and I didn’t know it. This screen shot shows what it looks like after a reboot and now I don’t get the option to undo copy. Quote
KenB Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 Hi Looking at the two images .... the "My Shared Folder" was created on Sept 28th 2013 and the "My Computer" folder was created on Dec 29th 2013 and last modified on the same date. Whatever you have done you have not made any changes to the "My Computer" folder. Can you access the files / folders that you want ? jimmyedwards Posted May 26, 2014 Author Posted May 26, 2014 Yes I can access all the files and folders, I just thought I had messed something up with my inadvertent clicking. Is it normal for My Shared Folder to have 637GBs which is the hard drive size and My Computer to have 355 bytes and Size on disk 4.00 KB? I wonder where in My Shared Folder all those Gbs are because when I hover over each flie and folder I don’t see no more than 45 Gbs. Quote
KenB Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 One more question ... "My Shared Folder" - do you have a network and share files and folders ? The implication is that you do for this computer. jimmyedwards Posted May 26, 2014 Author Posted May 26, 2014 Actually I don't even know what a network is but I do know I don't share files or folders or anything. My daughter has a laptop and my grandkids(4) have tablets and they use my Wi-Fi. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Actually, the "My Conputer" properties window is only the properties of a shortcut, for example an icon on the desktop, it is not showing the properties of the computer itself. If you click on the start, then right click on computer or my computer in the list there, and then properties, you should get the full system window open. Though not having Windows 8 I can't be sure of that. However, as Ken said, you haven't apparently done anything with the accidental hit of "Copy" instead of "Paste". My guess is that whatever was copied, just went to the normal hidden clipboard, just the same as anything copied does. When the computer was shut down, the clipboard automatically empties itself so nothing should have changed. If your daughter and grandchildren have access to your computer while connected to your WiFi, then the computer is actually in a network with them during that time. If that is the case, they (Daughter and children) can see everything on your computer while they are connected, that is because as it seems the whole computer is in a shared status. That can be changed if required by clicking on the "Sharing" and "security" tabs, we can possibly help if required to change anything. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Plastic Nev Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 We as forum staff mark them as solved Jimmy, but I will leave this for a day or so, just in case you need to come back if a problem surfaces later. Otherwise glad to have helped. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. If Free PC Help has helped you then please consider a donation.
