Keeping cookies

How do I make Firefox 29.0.1 keep my cookies? I am having to go through signing in again on nearly every site I visit.

Lets use my Gmail account as an example and lets say I get to it through 'Bookmarks'. It opens on a 'register/sign-in' page. I'm already registered so I click sign-in. It then takes me to the sign in page! :rolleyes: All then is as normal.

I am using Windows 8.1.1. I have tried the Tools>options>Privacy route. Now I am assuming that I should be using the 'use customs settings for history' box? Well when I do the boxes I have ticked are,

Remember my browsing & download history.

Remember search & form history.

Accept cookies from sites

Accept all third party cookies 'always'.

 

Now remember I'm only assuming that those are the correct settings but I have tried a combination of them all.

Anyway when I have them set as above I click ok and close the options box. It matters not whether I re-open in straight away or in another browsing session, the 'Use customs settings for history' box, has reverted to 'Remember History'. Is that normal? Whether tis or not Firefox is not letting me keep my cookies, so has anyone any idea what I am doing wrong?

Oh and I have tried in safe mode and it remains the same.

Hi. My guess you have something set to delete cookies on shut down. Check your browser settings first.

Under "Security" have you got the box "remember Passwords for Sites" checked?

Hi, although I know of some differences in Windows 8.1 and the way Firefox shows some options, I wonder if you have this.

 

Open tools, then select "Options", select the "Privacy" tab, in the lower part of that window for history, do you have a tick box for "Clear history when Firefox closes" if so and there is a tick in the box, remove the tick.

To open that part of Privacy I have to change from 'remember history' to 'use custom settings for history' (sorry I've just seen that I've already said that), anyway when that is done the box you mention is unchecked. Is it supposed to go back to remember history do you think. Not important just now, just thinking.

Hi Further to Nev's good advice, the cookies that are actually saved on your computer can be found here.

Scroll through the list and see what cookies are missing. This is what I see for eg FPCH. My privacy page is set like this.

That's right.When you log out all your cookies are cleared,and the next time you open FPCH you must log in again.

 

That's the same on all Websites.

 

Did you think you would log in automatically again?

 

You never log out of FPCH and just close the site.

 

Next time you click on FPCH you are still logged in.

Just to agree with DSTM, if you are clicking the log out at the top of the page, you will have to log in again. As he said that applies to all websites regardless of what your settings are, all log in cookies have been deleted for that site when you click "Log out"

If you wish to be logged in next time you open the website page, don't log out. Just go to another page, or if shutting down, close Firefox with the usual red and white cross on the top right corner.

Why is Avast and Bit Defender installed?

Ok this won't make a difference to the cookie problem .... but having 2 AV's installed is always bad news.

Are the 2 AV's installed or is one a leftover?

 

My settings are basically the same as DSTM's .... except i never accept third party cookies.

Are you running any cleaners on the system.... CCleaner for example.

If so, it may be this that is cleaning out the cookies.

Sorry I've taken so long to reply but I have been away overnight. I also won't be back until tonight (hopefully) this time too.

I don't think I am explaining myself very clearly which s a drawback of mine. What I meant was, even tho it says all cookies cleared I have to log in whether I sign out or not, but only on some sites. I gave gmail as an example. I asked on a gmail forum as was told that it had to be cookies clearing. On gmail for instance it matters not if I sign out or not it still goes to 2 step sign in.

 

Starbuck, yes bitdefender was a leftover which I kept forgetting about. It's gone now.

You could be onto something with Ccleaner. I'll check it out.

It depends on what you call bad.

This example should explain it:

 

When you visit a domain such as somedomain.com, the web pages on that domain may feature content from a third-party domain.

For instance, there may be an advertisement run by anotherdomain.com showing graphic advert banners.

When your web browser asks for the banner image from anotherdomain.com, that third-party domain is allowed to set a cookie

 

Even though the advertiser from anotherdomain.com may not know your name, it can use the random ID number in the cookie to build up an anonymous profile of the sites you visit. Then, when it spots the unique ID in the third-party cookie, it can say to itself: "visitor 3E7ETW278UT regularly visits a music site, so show him/her adverts about music and music products".

 

Some people don't like the idea of advertising companies building up profiles about their browsing habits, even if the profile is anonymous.

Ok I'm back.

I pretty much had my settings the way you all seem to. I have kept 3d party cookies. I unchecked the cookies option on Ccleaner in both IE (which I don't use) and Firefox (which I do) and for the moment all is going well. If it all goes bad again I will abandon Cc altogether.

Just one more final thing worth a mention, I hope you do not use the registry side of C.Cleaner. Any so called registry cleaner and that includes the registry side of C.Cleaner are a recipe for eventual disaster.

Sooner or later and quite often sooner, it will damage the registry causing all sorts of problems. Quite often the only way out is to reinstall Windows once that damage has been done.

 

If you search the forum for "Registry cleaners" you will find many people we have either warned away from them or where members have got problems due to using them.

I just thought I would mention that Ccleaner does have the option to exclude individual cookies from cleaning. This way you can use Ccleaner to delete cookies but save the cookies used for logiing onto sites. Ccleaner>Options>Cookies. Just move the cookies you want to keep to the right side,
