Ray1000 Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 (edited) For the last year or so my system has comprised of a TalkTalk Huawei HG533 router wired to my desktop PC. Two other Ethernet cables leave the main router and travel in opposite directions ... one to an Xbox in one room ... and another to a Huawei HG532a router in another room to extend the wireless range. Huawei HG533 (R1) Huawei HG532a (R2) From memory, when I first set the second router up using instructions on the internet ... I gave R2 the same Username and Password as R1. Its IP address was changed from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.2 The DHCP was disabled on R2 I used Lan1 to Lan1 for the Ethernet connection from R1 to R2 The wireless channel was set to a different channel on R2 to that on R1 On Friday the main router was changed by TalkTalk for a D Link DSL3780 D Link DSL 3780 (R1) Huawei HG532a (R2) I've spent 4 days on and off trying to get the second router set up properly:confused: Hopefully the answer is in the attached cmd > ipconfig/all log suggested by Seedy in another post, if not I'll explain the problems I'm getting. Any suggestions gratefully received. Ray1000 Posted June 3, 2014 Author Posted June 3, 2014 Thanks for the reply Seedy, I just need to work out how to get a log and keep the settings as they are ... when I log into the R2 on the desktop using 192.168.1.2 it only has a wireless capability ... no Internet ... no ADSL ... and my desktop isn't wireless. Tomorrow I'll see if I can do it using a laptop ... or is there some other way? Ray Quote
seedy21 Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Hi Ray I don't know another way am affraid. If you can access the router in R2 from the PC in R1 it sounds like the R2 router is using the correct IP Address. We need to see what happening with the Network when it leaves R2 to the Clients. Running that command only lists information from the Network adapters on your computer and doesn't change any settings on the Network Seedy21 Quote “It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything.”― Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club http://www.geekstogo.com/downloads/unite_blue.png Need help with your computer problems? Ray1000 Posted June 4, 2014 Author Posted June 4, 2014 Thank you for that Ken, I'm not sure if this is the R2 log, or just another version of the R1 log ... I used a laptop connected wirelessly to R1 while R2 was powered up, entered 192.168.1.2 in the address bar which brought the R2 summary screen up, entered the broadband username and password, clicked connect then to the cmd to produce the log. One aspect of the problem is this ... Before last Friday you could go anywhere in the house or most of the garden and the wireless strength would be 3 to 5 bars going up as you got closer to R1 or R2. Since Friday if you turn on a laptop, tablet or phone near to R1 it just connects normally ... if you stand near to R2 and turn a mobile device on it won't connect at all ... it stops it from connecting to R1 even if you were in range. ipconfig /all > cmd.txt && Notepad cmd.txt Attempt to get HG523a log wirelessly ............... Ray1000 Posted June 4, 2014 Author Posted June 4, 2014 Thanks Seedy, I'll bring the R2 (Router 2) into the computer room and connect it to the desktop and produce another log. seedy21 Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Hi Seedy, Disconnecting R1 (Primary Router) completely Connecting desktop to R2 via Ethernet cable. Finding there was no Internet connection OK I would excepted this to happen as DHCP would be set by R1. If you removed the Cable between R1 and R2, R2 wont know what to do as it is acting as a Bridge not a "MASTER" device Having to reset the R2 router ... presumably wiping out the applied secondary router settings. Yes. In my eyes this is what i would do. Make sure your R2 box is manually set to 192.168.1.2 Make sure that Subnet mask is set to 255.255.255.0 if they is an option for this Make sure Default Gateway and DNS is set to 192.168.1.1 If you have an option for a Second DNS entry please put 8.8.8.8 Make sure DHCP is turned off on R2. This will cause all problems. On R1 if you can under DHCP see if you can set a reserve on address 192.168.1.2 for R2. This will stop it given out this address on your Network. After all of that is checked / add. Put the R2 back into its normal place and test from there. Good Luck ! Ray1000 Posted June 4, 2014 Author Posted June 4, 2014 Thanks Seedy, I'll have a go at that and let you know how I go on. On R1 if you can under DHCP see if you can set a reserve on address 192.168.1.2 for R2. This will stop it given out this address on your Network. Will the reserve setting be on this page? http://extremetechsupport.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2222&d=1401903102 Ray Quote
seedy21 Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Hi Ray Yes that looks to be the page. It looks like Ray- PC is on the R2 IP address. You can remove this and add in R2 or you can move R2 to the end of your Network range which would be 192.168.1.254 and then put the reserve on there. Or you can change the DHCP IP Address range from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.3 which will stop the router giving out 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 address on your network. Ray1000 Posted June 4, 2014 Author Posted June 4, 2014 Thanks, I'll have a go and see what happens ... With two wireless laptops, three smart phones and two tablet devices in the house I've seen when that list has been longer ... R1 clearly sees Jamies-iPhone as Jamies-iPhone and Ray-PC as my desktop ... how will I find out what name it recognises the secondary R2 router by so I can type it in? ... Or maybe I could connect it up in the lounge and see if it appears on the list automatically? Ray Quote

Or maybe I could connect it up in the lounge and see if it appears on the list automatically? If possible shut down all devices. Reboot R1 and then turn on R2. As its the only device on the list you can then set your reserve. Another way is to go to the Second router and they should be a sticker on it for the Mac Address. Note this down and when you go back to R1 and to the manual config using that Mac address Seedy21 Quote “It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything.”― Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club http://www.geekstogo.com/downloads/unite_blue.png Need help with your computer problems? Ray1000 Posted June 4, 2014 Author Posted June 4, 2014 Thank you very much Seedy, I've just walked in every room, including upstairs, with a YouTube video playing on my HTC phone and it never faulted. The wireless indicator increased to full as I approached each router. It seems it was constantly giving the secondary routers IP address away before you explained the reserve/static idea. Out of interest while writing the procedure out I realised I had both routers on the same channel when doing the YouTube test ... I've just changed the R2 channel to 9 (R1 is on 11) Ray Disconnected Primary Router (R1) from desktop PC. Turned off Connected Secondary Router (R2) to Desktop PC via cable Turned on Typed 192.168.1.1 in address bar of Google Chrome Log into R2 set up page with Username, admin, Password, admin. Ray1000 Posted June 4, 2014 Author Posted June 4, 2014 Just one thing amiss ... I've only noticed this as I've come into the lounge, and near to R2 ... you still can't connect to the Internet without walking back towards R1 first ... once connected the wireless from R2 works ... there must be a setting I've missed ... will have another look tomorrow. KenB Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 Hi Ray Just poking my nose in here :) R2 channel to 9 (R1 is on 11) If this is working then leave it - but there is some overlap of frequency on channels 9 & 11. If you want to be absolutely sure that they are totally independent then use channel 1 or 6 instead of 9 You could use 2,3,4,5 too but 1 / 6 / 11 are the standard settings. Ray1000 Posted June 5, 2014 Author Posted June 5, 2014 I'm going to try that Ken, starting with Channel 6 on R2 ... After I'd done Seedy's settings and got full coverage all over the house using a mobile phone on WiFi I hadn't realised both routers were still on Channel 11. They are now on 9 and 11 with no connection facility while in the R2 wireless range ... hopefully it is only the Channel choice that's stopping it connecting. Ray Quote
Ray1000 Posted June 5, 2014 Author Posted June 5, 2014 Changing the R2 router channel to 6 and 1 hasn’t changed its capacity for connecting via WiFi.:( When a Mobile Phone, Tablet or Laptop is placed nearer to R2 in the lounge than it is to R1 in the computer room it won’t connect via Wi-Fi. If you take it towards R1 it connects to the Internet, and as you go back towards R2 it takes up and utilises R2’s wireless signal. When trying to connect near to R2 it goes through the Obtaining IP Address, Authenticating cycle a few times and finally settles on “Avoided poor Internet Connection. I can get it to connect sometimes by re-starting the router, telling the device to forget the connection and putting the password back in but even that is hit and miss. When logged onto the Summary Screen for R2 it only shows Wireless on green, the Internet and ADSL are red, and presumably this is how it should be. When connected to Wi-Fi via R1 and stood near to R2 the wireless indicator shows 5 bars but when trying and failing to connect to Wi-Fi via R2 it shows as maybe 1 bar, a poor connection ... it gives the impression it is reading the signal strength from R1 but R2 is stopping it from connecting. If I turned R2 off it would probably connect to R1 from the same position. Considering the system has worked perfectly for the last year or so ... the things that have changed are the primary router changing from a Huawei HG533 to a DLink DSL3780 and the settings on the secondary router (R2) Also the default settings on the new DLink may have been different to the original Huawei. Ray1000 Posted June 7, 2014 Author Posted June 7, 2014 Thank you Seedy, I've set both channels on 11 and I have full coverage over the house as I did at post 15 when I had them both on 11 "by mistake" (At that point I thought they needed to be different) I still don't have the capacity for connecting to WiFi from the conservatory for instance ... I have to be physically nearer to R1 than R2 to do the initial connection. TalkTalk said something about their routers not being "Repeating" type and you could never connect to two routers ... you needed to buy an "after market" "independent" router to overcome it. (Not sure if I'm using the correct terms) I'm wondering if by chance my original Huawei HG533 wasn't "locked" Or ... if I still have a setting that needs changing .... I'll upload a picture of one of the settings pages I'm not sure about later. Ray Quote

seedy21 Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 Hi Ray The link you added is invalided. Can you upload the picture again. Its true that some router do and some don't let you use them as a bridge mode. A third party example of a Wi-fi repeater would be a unit like this. Lets have another stab at this. I will need you to grab the laptop and go into R2. Turn the wi-fi off on the laptop and plug it into R2 router. We need to run a Command with Command Prompt Click on Start, click on Run and type in "cmd.exe" and click Run.
