As you can tell I haven't got the hang of the Albums and Photos yet ...:o

I was trying to show you the WAN section of the set up as I'm not sure if I have the connection type set properly.

"I still don't have the capacity for connecting to WiFi from the conservatory for instance ... I have to be physically nearer to R1 than R2 to do the initial connection"

This is the only difference now, to a month ago ... I double-checked this with my son today ... he would come home from work, turn his Galaxy Note on in the conservatory and connect wirelessly via R2 ... now he needs to go into the room containing Router 1 ... connect via wireless ... go back into the conservatory and use the 5 bar wireless signal coming from R2.

Thanks for your patience :)

1). Your Wi-fi was turned on when you ran the test

2). Your Ethernet cable didn't look like it was connected.

Please run the test again with the WI-FI on the laptop turned off and with a wire going from R2 to the Laptop.

Did you delete the images above. When I went to view them they say invalid Photo links again

Thank you

Sorry about that I'll have another go ... There's a wireless switch on the laptop that I assumed turned it off, I'll make certain it won't connect wirelessly first this time.

Hopefully the pictures are back on ... I removed - cropped - and replaced them ... I Hope!

Hi Ray

looks like you fixed the Pictures problem.

Just some more questions

When you connected to R2 is it still on the same manual address we gave it? I think it was 192.168.1.2 ?

On your settings it looks like they is a Bridge option.

Go back to the R2 WAN Settings page. Under PPPoA Make sure WAN Connection is Unticked. Under Bridge mode, Mark sure Port binding as LAN 1 or LAN 2 selected on with Port the Cable from R1 to R2 is on . Also make sure DHCP transparent tranmisson is checked. Save the settings and reboot R2. Can you test after this?

Hi Seedy,

I may have to leave those checks while tomorrow ... its my turn to get the supper ready! ... in the meantime here's another log ... everything wireless in our house was off including the wireless switch on the laptop ... having said that in the notification bar at the bottom right it did say there was an unknown connection ... I assumed it meant the physical connection between the laptop and the R2 router via Ethernet cable. The ADSL wasn't connected by the way ... not sure if it needed to be.

The ip address for the R2 is 192.168.1.7 set manually the other day.

The same address is set as a static one on R1 using the MAC address to identify it ... (if I'm using the right terms)

Just going to have a quick go at the Bridge setting ...

Edit .... I'll have a look in the morning ... the boxes in Bridge are untickable at the moment ... It may be I have missed a submit button or something

This would explain why you have a WI-FI connection, but no Internet. The DHCP settings are not getting to R2. Try with the New settings I asked and let me know how it goes.

its my turn to get the supper ready!

Enjoy cooking :)

Had another go at this ... Under PPPoA Make sure WAN Connection is Unticked ... That is straightforward.

Under Bridge mode, Mark sure Port binding as LAN 1 or LAN 2 selected on with Port the Cable from R1 to R2 is on . Also make sure DHCP transparent transmission is checked ... I understand this but there are no options to tick any of the boxes ... apart from another WAN connection box in the Bridge page which doesn't make any difference ... the boxes I'm wanting to tick are in grey.

Hi Ray.

Can you run that Command with the cable that joins R1 to R2 in the laptop with the wi-fi off?

I am thinking that you can't run the bridge mode. It looks to be locked out by the software.

Hi Seedy,

This probably tells you something but no the laptop can't connect to the R2 down the 10 metre cable between R1 and R2 it just says web page unavailable.

I'm just trying some thing else .... Here is a log we'll refer to as from the White Router ... I'm posting it now while I have the laptop connected ... will come back to it shortly.

Ray

Ooops ... Back on the desktop now ... I can see the log didn't paste ... will have to do that again later.

I have a White Router Dlink DSL2680 ... Connected it to the laptop changed the usernames and passwords to match R1 - Chose Bridge Mode -changed the IP address to 192.168.1.7 - Disabled DHCP server - Changed wireless channel to 11 to match R1 - Made a cmd log at this point but evidently didn't paste it into the previous post ... now lost, or will it still be on the laptop Notepad?

Turned the routers off and back on.

Connected the White Router to the Ethernet cable in the lounge and ...

You can now log on in the lounge/conservatory/garden using the White R2 :)

As you walk towards R1 the wireless signal diminishes :( It may have always been like this ... I never took notice before.

If you log on near R1 and walk through the hall/kitchen/conservatory and into the garden the wireless signal stays, and increases as you pass R2 :)

I haven't gone back into R1 and reset the Static IP as I wasn't sure about the MAC address of the white router ... it says MAC ID BCF685ADE0DA on the back, presumably this is it?

Are there any useful logs I can do while its all connected/

HI Ray

That log looks good. Cant see any bad problems there.

Looks like you may have to keep the White Router if this has fixed your problem :)

I thought I would give this a couple of days just to make sure it continued to work properly.

There's a detail I need help with just to finish it off ...

In the DSL3780 Advanced LAN Setup page under the DHCP Table heading I still have 192.168.1.7 ( Secondary router IP address ) statically attached to the previous R2 routers MAC address.

I wanted to changed this to reflect the MAC address of the new White Router but there doesn't seem to be a way of deleting the old entry.

The table seems to allocate the next address, in my case 192.168.1.10 to any new MAC

I realise I could do that and then change the IP of the R2 to match but wondered if there was a way to keep it at 7

Or ... is it that now we are in Bride mode the Static address no longer applies?

HI Ray

Can you change the Mac Address that is attach to the reserve on 192.168.1.7?

If not, I think i would recommend leaving it where it is. A quote comes to mind.....

If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

Hi Seedy,

There's an interesting conversation about the problem on ...

http://talktalkmembers.com/t5/Unlimited-Broadband/Edit-Delete-DHCP-Table-entry-on-D-Link-2780/td-p/738597

It includes the obscure way of changing it at the bottom of the page ... and it works:)

I just need to type out the procedure for two routers using the Bridge method for future reference to finish the thread off.

Thank you again for all your help.

Now the R2 MAC address is reserved/static in R1 the system works fully in both directions ... using a mobile device you can connect via WiFi in either location and it changes over seamlessly as you near the other router.

Setting up a second router to extend wireless range (Bridge Mode Method)

With the PC connected via Ethernet cable to the Primary Router (R1)

Type 192.168.1.1 in address bar

Username = admin ... Password = admin

Take note of the Broadband Username and Password

Take note of the Wireless username and Password

Set the Wireless Channel to 11 (Or your preference)

Turn the R1 off and disconnect from the PC

Connect Secondary Router (R2) to the PC via cable and turn on.

Type 192.168.1.1 in address bar

Username = admin, Password = admin.

In Status take note of the Physical Address XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX (Mac Address)

In Advanced > Wireless Setup > Manual Setup ...

Set the Wireless Channel to the same as R1

Set theWireless username and Password same as R1

In Advanced >ADSL Setup ... Choose Bridge Mode

In Basic > LAN > DHCP change LAN Host Setting IP address to 192.168.1.7

Save Settings at each change

In DHCP Server on the same page disable DHCP Server

Clicked submit ... the Internet connection will be lost at this point

Disconnect R2 (Secondary Router) from the PC

Connect the Primary Router (R1) to the PC

Set R2 up in its new position and connect LAN1 on R1 to LAN1 on R2

Turn both routers on.

Typed 192.168.1.1 in address bar

Username = admin ... Password = admin

Click Advanced Click OK

In Set up > LAN Set up DCHP table

In IP Address choose 192.168.1.7

In MAC Address type XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX (Physical Address from line 11)

In Status choose Static > Choose Add/Apply

Turn everything off > Turn everything on after a minute or so.

Job done.

I happen to choose 7 in the IP address but it could be anything in the range

Different routers will have different setup pages.

Some routers may not have a Bridge mode option

The routers used in this case were (R1) DLink DSL3780 and (R2) DLink DSL2680
