maynardvdm Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 Hi all Just a simple question. My cd writer on my old p3(yes i still have a p3 for burning cd's :) and storing music) sometimes it just opens by itself, then i close it and it opens again. But when i put an empty disk in it will open, close for about 3 times and then it is working fine, the cd cuts perfectly. Is this hardware or software related. Running windows xp sp2(yes on the p3 450mhz 128mb Ram - Damm i need a new pc lol) Thanks Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 Hi Maynard Damn I have to agree, but is your P3 like this http://www.bigkey.com/pic/intel/11055_intel_slot_1_667mhz_p3_cpu_and_hs.jpg or this http://www.germes-online.com/direct/dbimage/50195586/810ET_Motherboard___P3_1_3G_Combo.jpg Quote
Seth Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 That's hardware related. Either it needs a good cleaning or it will need to be replaced. The former however is just about impossible and not worth the time and effort given the low cost of burners. Either buy a new one, or a shop can sell you a used one for cheap. Optical drives are normally very reliable, so if you can get a used one for next to nothing, then go for it. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. AdvancedSetup Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 Optical drives are normally very reliable Years ago I would agree with you Seth, but now days I replace way too many failed drives that haven't even made it to a year. Quality for mechanical devices on PCs these days is quite poor. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 I disagree AS, LG drives are most excellent whereas Liteon drives are fit for road fill only. Quote
AdvancedSetup Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 To each his own. Have replaced 2 LG drives last year as well. I used to swear by Plextor but they too have been crapping out too fast. Maybe you guys get different builds in UK but my luck with any drive (though many are the same MFG with swapped label) just has not been good. The good thing though is for $25 - $50 bucks a shot its not too bad to replace one. Not like a few years ago when they cost you $200+ to get one. Quote Need help with your computer problems?
