KenB Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Sorry for the delay, No problem :) If you are sure that you have everything off the hard drive that you need ( photos / files / documents / email addresses etc ) then you can begin the installation process. Take a look here - click here As you have the CDROM set as first boot device you can skip through to "Part 2" Please Note: This is explaining how to re-install XP using a full installation disk [ not Recovery Disks ] The only problem you may incur is the SATA drivers ...... Let's know how you get on. If you have any questions please ask before you start the re-install. When the screen gets to 'boot from CD' which I am asked to ignore, instead of continuing to load the Windows XP screen, I get an error message, It says: A disk read error occurred. - press Ctrl+Alt+Del to start. What have I not done?? Quote
KenB Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Try this: It sounds as if the files have been transferred onto the Hard Drive but the system is having difficulty booting up from them to complete the installation. When you get the "A disk read error occurred. - press Ctrl+Alt+Del to start. " try taking the CD out of the drive and then hit CTRL+ALT+DEL It may be that the system is looking at the CD Drive when it is expecting the Hard Drive. Let me know how you get on. andyg Posted June 17, 2014 Author Posted June 17, 2014 Yes, have tried that but no good, it just gets to the 'error message' quicker. Quote
KenB Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 It is probably the SATA drivers - or lack of them. Go back into the BIOS and look for AHCI next to SATA HDD and see if you can set this to IDE or Compatibility Mode. Try the installation again. I have just seen your message (thank you) but cannot find anywhere on the BIOS what you asked me to do??? Sorry! Cannot find any reference to AHCI or SATA drive?? Quote

andyg Posted June 19, 2014 Author Posted June 19, 2014 Didn't get called today so will have another crack later tonight. What's next on the 'things to do'!! I have a pc that will not boot up?? Quote
Plastic Nev Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Hi Andy, do you have another PC available or can borrow that you can use to burn disks, as that will be required to make the slipstreamed disk that will then have the required SATA drivers on it. andyg Posted June 21, 2014 Author Posted June 21, 2014 Hi, had my op and can get back to getting this pc working again. What do you need me to do next?? Cheers Quote
andyg Posted June 21, 2014 Author Posted June 21, 2014 Rightly or wrongly!! - I am having a second go at loading XP on this PC. It took about two hours last time so here goes! Quote
KenB Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 You can't do any harm Andy - I think, if it hangs again, that it is SATA drivers and Nev will explain how to sort this out. :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! andyg Posted June 21, 2014 Author Posted June 21, 2014 Ok, pc now up and running?? No idea why today is any different to last week but still? Apart from an anti virus or malware program, is there anything I now need to do to keep this pc running smoother?? Quote
KenB Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 That's good news Andy. Which service pack does it have ? Start > right click on My Computer > Properties. XP should have SP3 Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
andyg Posted June 21, 2014 Author Posted June 21, 2014 It's only SP 2, I was just checking out the Emsisoft av which Starbucks recommended and that told I needed SP 3 Quote
KenB Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Do you have a link to SP3 or do you need one posting ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
andyg Posted June 21, 2014 Author Posted June 21, 2014 Have just updated to SP 3, Have downloaded Firefox for the browser and now downloading Emsisoft available (free version), Will sort out account within 30 days. HD is now the C Drive instead of the H it was before? With an active av running, at least the PC should be safe whilst updating. Let me know what other things I need to or not to do?? Starbucks said that I or the PC had loads of programs all running at the same time, obviously I don't want to make the same mistake as the person who did the work for me but not very well, last time Quote
andyg Posted June 21, 2014 Author Posted June 21, 2014 Emsisoft av now up and running with one malware object quarantined already during its first scan!!! Quote
Starbuck Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Hi Andy, the PC had loads of programs all running at the same time, obviously I don't want to make the same mistake as the person who did the work for me but not very well, last time Most of those services shouldn't have been set to run automatically.... but they were for some reason. M$ doesn't set them all to run (by default) when the OS is installed.... so it must have been some changes that the shop made. By going with the defaults on the install, you shouldn't have that problem again. HD is now the C Drive instead of the H it was before So you've made a better job of the install, than the shop did. :) Quote Member of:UNITE

Starbuck Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Not sure (sounds good I know) but something from the SP 3 update?? There is always the possibility that it was a false positive. Leave it in quarantine for the time being. Quote Member of:UNITE
andyg Posted June 21, 2014 Author Posted June 21, 2014 I have no sound? speakers are connected as before, Is this where I need to install the Winfast K7S Utility CD?? I'm guessing so? It contains: Chipset Drivers Device Drivers Super Utilities DirectX 9.0b Adobe Reader 6.0!! Norton Security 2004!! I know I don't need the last two as they are out of date. What is the DirectX?? Don't want to do anything without your sayso! Quote
