Now you are getting me confused Ken, from the research and general look I have done around SiS and Winfast appear to be two different companies!!

 

However, whoever made the motherboard, I feel sure the disk must be the wrong one for it, due to the message Andy gets when putting it in.

If all is running smoothly, then leave it out of the equation. (Don't try and fix what ain't broke)

Can I just ask a question?

When the PC powers down and all goes quiet, the power light for the CnM Card Reader stays illuminated and so does the External HD.

The card reader connects via the motherboard and the External HD connects by USB.

To turn those off I have to flick the switch off at the wall.

Is there something I can do to get these to turn off when the PC 'shuts down'??

Hi Andy, although to all intents and purposes the computer is shut down, but the power supply isn't fully shut down and they never are while there is still power from the mains.They have to be otherwise there wouldn't be any power to make it turn on when the main tower button is pressed to start.

 

Typically the power is still on for the lower voltages just for that purpose and that low voltage is what is provided at the USB socket and other devices internally connected to the USB main rail on the motherboard, hence why both the card reader and the external drive still have lights lit.

 

So in essence, there isn't anything that can be done to make those lights go out without completely turning the mains power off at the wall.

Which is what i've started to do in my computer room.

There was that many little blue lights on.... it looked like Christmas when i turned the main light off. :)

Sorry Guys - I'm back again!!

 

Have been busy with other stuff and have not turned my wifes PC on since and she has not even been on it as yet as I haven't had chance to put Ofice onto it (mislaid disc!!) so I have kept her away from it however, I turned it on yesterday and got the dreaded blue screen followed by numerous messages.

I have taken pics of these messages for you to analyse but at the end of the day - it will not now fire up and I do not know why??

Hi. I would first disconnect everything USB except keyboard and mouse and start in Safe Mode, tapping F8 repeatedly on boot.

What message do you get?

This has something to do with SIMSIG. If you have Norton Antivirus please disable it.

No idea what SIMSIG is??

Do not have Norton, the PC has at present a free version of Emsisoft.

No idea on how to remove anything when the PC will not start up??

Sorry Gary I missed one of your posts. Looks like you have a damaged or corrupt boot.ini file.

Have you got an install os disc?

You will need to perform a startup repair.

Tried that but didn't want to know. Thought I may have to go through a complete reinstall again??

Ok, have tried putting XP disc back in to repair/reinstall but it gets as far downloading the necessary files and then freezes j u st before the Welcome to Set up Screen. Just get a black screen thereafter??

Is there something catastrophically wrong within the hardware of this pc for it to fail like this so soon after all the work that has taken place??

Hi Andy, this is a real disappointment for you after what we have done so far.

 

A lot of what you have showed us in the screen shots is pointing to a possible hard drive failure, or it could also be faulty RAM. How many stick of RAM are there?

 

Here are a few things to look at, first is to check that the small ribbon data cable is properly connected to both the hard drive and also the mother board, pull the plugs off then put them back is best. Do that with the power cable too.

 

If still no go, if more than one stick of ram, remove all except one and try it. If still no go, take that one out and replace it with one of those you did pull out until all have been tried one at a time, if one is faulty it should show up straight away.

 

Let us know what you find with that please.

All components mentioned are almost new and of good quality.

Only the power supply, motherboard and graphics card and CDR/DVD drive are original.

Great shout Nev, the red data cable from the HD to the motherboard appeared loose however, I disconnected and reconnected everything just in case and it seems ok again. Brilliant!!

Great news Andy, it is surprising that connections can work loose, also sometimes the metal of the plug contacts can oxidise, so removing and replacing scrapes the oxide off back to a clean surface. Otherwise, If it does go off again, it may be worth buying another cable just in case it is a little faulty, they aren't that expensive.
