Quirkie Posted June 24, 2014 Author Posted June 24, 2014 Hi, I tried that but it didn't work Quirkie Quote
Plastic Nev Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Hi, the problem may be because of a lack of a certain player not installed, or correct codecs. To help with that I need to know where the video is from, is it off the web such as a youtube video, is it off a DVD disk, or other source. Also is it the same with any video, or just certain ones. If it is always video not working in your browser, you may not have an up to date player plug in. go to this page, and then click on the "Update" button. https://get3.adobe.com/flashplayer/update/plugin/ If it is installed and out of date, it will update, if not installed it will tell you and give you the install option. Quirkie Posted June 24, 2014 Author Posted June 24, 2014 (edited) Hi, Youtube is where I am having the problem. I did install adobe flashplayer Still does the same thing. Just a green screen By the way they used to play just fine. I don't know what happened Quirkie Edited June 24, 2014 by Quirkie Quote
DSTM Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Hi. You said you tried what I said. Let's try it a different way. When you have a youtube green screen, right click on the screen and uncheck hardware acceleration. Click close. Option 2 When utube video showing green, right click on the (cog) bottom of video, click quality and drop the quality to 360. What shows now? Install this codec pack as well. http://filehippo.com/download_klite_codec_pack/tech/13319/ Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
Quirkie Posted June 25, 2014 Author Posted June 25, 2014 Hi, I tried right clicking on the screen to uncheck hardware acceleration but it doesn't show anything it just says something about get video URL and Debug. I did install the codec pack. Still shows green screen Quirkie Quote
DSTM Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Drop the quality to 360 as described in Post 6. This is important. Sorry when you right click on the green video, choose "Settings" then uncheck the box.my bad. Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
Quirkie Posted June 25, 2014 Author Posted June 25, 2014 Ok, the quality is at 360 and when I right click there is no settings option. The only setting I see is on the cog icon but when I right click on it there is no setting option Quirkie Quote
DSTM Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Has the 360 got a tick beside it? 3am here. Nev will continue to help you running more tests. Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
Quirkie Posted June 25, 2014 Author Posted June 25, 2014 The 360 has check before it and a "p" after it Quirkie Quote
Quirkie Posted June 25, 2014 Author Posted June 25, 2014 I just checked and the DVDs aren't showing the videos either just the sound! So must be all videos. Quirkie Quote
Plastic Nev Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Hi, firstly can you please answer a couple of questions to help us. What make and model of laptop is it? Have you recently changed anything or updated any of your security, antivirus, or firewall? Also what antivirus, and firewall do you have? Roughly how long since did video's play OK? I have some idea's, but need answers to those questions first please. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Quirkie Posted June 25, 2014 Author Posted June 25, 2014 Hi, It's an HP Processor AMD E1 -2100 APU with Radeon HD Graphics Avast anti virus, Avast Internet security Firewall. It's been about two weeks or so since a video played right. I noticed it the other day when I tried to play a video that there was the green screen. I did update the flash player and HP has some recent updates too Action Log from HP Updates Includes HP System Event Utility, HP Notebook System BIOS update AMD Processor, Synaptics, Touchpad Driver, Hope this helps Quirkie Quote
Plastic Nev Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Hi, thanks for the info, a couple of things, firstly unfortunately I don't know the full Avast system, however, can you access the firewall part of it and check if anything to do with video is in the block list, if so let us know. The next thing if there seems nothing blocked is to try a different media player. This will only play DVD or video already on your PC, not Youtube, but if it works or doesn't it will prove something one way or the other. here is the link to download the VLC player, install it and see if it works please. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html If that doesn't work, then we can try a system restore back to before the two or three weeks since it went wrong. Do you know how to do a system restore in Windows 8.1? If not have a look at this article. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/4692-system-restore-how-do-windows-8-a.html A system restore will not remove data, files, photo,s etc, it only puts the system back to what it was at the date you choose to restore to. Once the system has been restored, and providing the video now works, you will find the recent updates will have to go back in, do them one at a time and after each, check the video still works. Too many times we have seen certain updates actually break something, so if you find which update turns the video off, go back to a restore point again and then just don't accept that update. Nev. wellies Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Hi, I tried right clicking on the screen to uncheck hardware acceleration but it doesn't show anything it just says something about get video URL and Debug. Quirkie The hardware enabled/disabled option is found by right-clicking on the video while it is playing and then going to 'Settings' first. Edit: Sorry, on re-reading, you say you don't have the 'Settings' option present? Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Quirkie Posted June 25, 2014 Author Posted June 25, 2014 Hi I did the system restore and the videos work including my DVDs.:D Thank you so much for the help! You all are great! Quirkie Quote
Plastic Nev Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 OK, thanks for letting us know, and now be very careful with those updates, make sure it is one at a time and check after each one. Sometimes you can be lucky and they all go in OK the second time round, otherwise one of them sends you back to where you were, so it is try to uninstall the update, or it is back to a system restore again and remember to refuse the one that caused it. Quirkie Posted June 29, 2014 Author Posted June 29, 2014 Ok, it's doing it again. It must be in the automatic updates. I don't know which update is doing it! So I could do a system restore again but it probably will do an update again and same thing will happen. What do I do? Quirkie Quote
Plastic Nev Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Hi, do you know where these updates are from, are they from Hewlet Packard (HP) Are they from Windows Microsoft, Or are they from Avast? From a previous post, they appeared to be all from HP, however if possible we need to be sure it is only them and not somewhere else. If it is, only from HP, I suggest that a report of your problem should be sent, they might have a fix if it is a known problem, and if not they should be made aware of it. Next is to first look into the control panel, find the HP centre (if there is one) and have a look to see if automatic updates can be at least turned to manual. Let us know please. Nev. Quirkie Posted June 30, 2014 Author Posted June 30, 2014 I don't know which one it is. All 3 do updates. I can set the HP updates to manual. I'll see if I can contact HP. Quirkie Quote
Plastic Nev Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Hi, if the HP updates can be made manual, Windows updates should also be set to manual, then try another system restore. In manual mode you should be able to select and allow each update one at a time. In Avast I think you will find you should also be able to make updates manual as well. Nev. DSTM Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Avast won't be an issue. If you wish you can change Avast updates from Automatic to Manual under "Tools" >"Updates". Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
Quirkie Posted June 30, 2014 Author Posted June 30, 2014 OK I got the videos to work again. I put the HP updates on manual. I think it maybe the HP updates doing this. We'll see how it goes Quirkie Quote
Quirkie Posted July 2, 2014 Author Posted July 2, 2014 Avast is not set for automatic updates and I have the HP set for manual. Not sure on windows Microsoft. Videos aren't playing again. Just the sound. I can't keep doing the system restore. this is fraustrating Quirkie Quote
