It is possible you keep installing the same Microsoft problem update. As discussed earlier you need to set your Microsoft updates to manual and install each update one at a time.When you find the problem update then hide it.

This is something wrong and might be giving a clue to the problem. The option should be there when right-clicking on a Flash presentation (option written as, 'Settings...'). Uninstalling and reinstalling Flash Player to see if it returns that option could be worth trying. Then try un-ticking 'Enable hardware acceleration'.

 

If it is a Flash Player problem, I'm not sure System Restore would have any effect on it?

Further thought, I notice YouTube videos are played by HTML5 (not Flash Player) if using Internet Explorer and Chrome. Maybe the problem is a browser issue.

Sorry for interrupting, I had two TV catchup apps that stopped working after a couple of weeks, presumably because of Windows updates because I hadn't used the computer in between. I just tried the Fixit link to see if it would help with my problem but got a message saying "We're sorry, but your operating system is not supported by Microsoft Fix It at this time."

 

My computer is running Windows 8.1 64-bit.

Sorry, I was just pointing out that Fixit wasn't compatible with Windows 8 64-bit, my problem seems to have cured itself.

I do not know which update is doing it. I have them on manual now.. Today the videos are playing ok!

 

Just have to keep on an the updates

OK, Quirky, indeed it is sounding weird, however, all I can ask now is to think back to whatever you did from when the video worked, to the present moment when it no longer does, there has to be something doing it. Even opening a program, if badly coded it can change a setting somewhere else.

If all update systems were effectively off and the fault still occurs, it has to be something else that has been done causing it.

Hi,

 

I really don't know what happened. I just know one day I got a green screen and all I got was the sound.

How do I figure out what is causing it?

Hi, I am scratching my head now and wondering if there is some malware doing it now as other options seem to have been tried.

 

have you done a scan for and to fix any virus/malware with Avast?

Do you have any other security software such as Malwarebytes, if so have you run any scans with that?

 

Let us know about what any scans find and if needed we will get the malware guys involved.

 

If not sure about where to get Malwarebytes and how to use it if you don't already have it, just follow step 1 for now from this page :-

Some faults are hard to diagnose and cure over the Internet. Just some things that need confirming that might be a help though:

 

* Are the video's that won't play all Flash videos/presentations?

* Do some YouTube videos play and some not?

* Are they all played via the browser or do some videos use a standalone player?

* If some other player, what file extensions are the videos that won't play?

* If just the browser, have you tried a different one?

* Have you got any script blocking software installed (if so try disabling it)?

* Have you looked into it being something blocked in any security program that is installed?

 

I know some of these points have been spoken of already but since nothing has worked up to now, it could just be worth combing over them again in case something comes to light.

You could try the repair install suggested by DSTM. Failing that, it could be a graphics problem if it won't play off-the-shelf DVDs either. Do you have some graphics card settings available to try? Is the driver the latest one?

Yesterday I did what is called refreshing the PC. So far the videos are playing just fine.

Hopefully they will continue to

Since I refreshed my PC the videos are playing. I think it may have been a setting that got turned off. Wish I knew for sure

The complexity of the Windows operating system is sometimes impossible to understand, so a complete repair, or refresh is the only way to sort out whatever part of it that may have become corrupted. Hopefully all will be OK from now on and thanks for letting us know.
