A while back I got advice from you guys about updating to Google Chrome. At that time I downloaded it but not as my default browser instead keeping it for optional use via a desk top icon.

As I use Windows XP I know it is now unsupported and decided to bite the bullet and set Chrome as my default browser so I first removed Chrome from my PC using add/remove programs - my thinking being start by reinstalling Chrome as default so I could then go straight to it from a desktop icon.

Now I dont know what is going on! When I try to download Chrome I get message 'download not possible' as my system does not have the minimum hardware spec required which seems ridiculous as I just uninstalled it and has worked perfectly whenever I have used it!

Can anyone help please?

Hi Ray,

It is remotely possible that Chrome has since been updated beyond the capabilities of XP ... but I doubt it.

You could use system restore to go back to the time you had the original one working ... with two browsers on the machine it asks if you want to choose the "new" one as your default browser when you first open it.

Thanks for quick reply Ray.

I have tried to use sysytem restore and Its not working I get message 'cannot restore to this point' which I gave as a couple of days before I removed Chrome. I have tried two seperate dates so think its a no go.

Any other suggestions welcome everybody

Hi PEV

Try this link

https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/index.html?system=true&standalone=1

This link contains the System requirements for Chrome

Hi Seedy

Afraid it didnt work I got thanked for installing Chrome thEn a message saying 'problem encountered with Chrome installer needs to close down' errorOxc0000001d'

My PC has 64.3 GB free space on hard drive and I dont know difference betweem MB amd GB so dont know if my PC is man enough to take the download but in any case I'm totaly baffled because yesterday I removed Google Chrome which was certainly working fine.

In round figures Ray, 1GB = 1000MB, if Chrome uses 350MB of disc space your hard drive has 180 times more than it needs.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Hi PEV

The errors are not given me alot to go off. I would like to point this part of the log out to you.

Percentage of memory in use: 80%

Total physical RAM: 511.36 MB

Available physical RAM: 98.43 MB

You are running low on memory which may be causing it to crash .

My Suggestion would be

* Download the Offline verison of Google Chrome again and save it to your Desktop

* Uninstall Google Update Helper

Next boot into safe mode

  • Turn your computer off through Shut Down.
  • Wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.
  • Once your computer's manufacturer logo (eg. 'ACeR') starts to show, start pressing the F8 key repeatedly.
  • Keep pressing it until the Windows Advanced Options Menu loads up.
  • Make sure 'Safe Mode' is selected, navigate to it by using the arrow keys.
  • Press enter, and your computer will start booting into Safe Mode.

Run the Install for Google Chrome.

If successful reboot your machine and test

If unsuccesful please provide the Error code and message.

HI PEV

Offline installer can be found here

Forget trying to uninstall Google Updater Helper and continue with the rest of the steps.

Thanks again Seedy

I will give it a go but it will be 2 or 3 days as am now rushed off my feet for next couple of days.

To Seedy and rest of you who have advised me.

I have now actually downloaded Firefox which at this early stage seems to work for me. This was a lazy option to trying to get Chrome via the ofline downloader as suggested by Seedy.

Can anyone let me know their opinions on Firefox? - I have seen mixed comments on this forum about firefox and wonder what the latest are?

Ray

I was on Firefox while using XP Ray and it worked perfectly for years ... I only moved to Chrome on the occasion of not being able to upload some passport photos to Bonusprint ... they suggested Chrome, it solved the problem and I have used it ever since.

I'm still running Firefox on my XP and Windows 8 machine's. I haven't had any faults to report.

Been using Firefox for years, OK it has had its problems, but usually quickly fixed when the Mozila team are made aware of them. At present this version 30 is nice and stable.

I moved away from Firefox when they bought out version 29. ( just had too many problems for me )

Version 30 is as Nev says.... Nice and stable.

Have kept Pale Moon on Win7, but run Firefox on Win XP and Win 8.1.
